The negative effect of the earthquake was weak. Results provide information on a broad range of potentially protective or vulnerability factors that could help identify those at risk for developing coronavirus-related psychological distress. Findings suggest that promoting active coping styles and social interactions could be preventive and potentially therapeutic in general populations.According to appraisal theory, individuals cope with perceived threats in different ways. If engaging in problem-focused coping, for example, they may seek information useful for eliminating the root cause of the threat. However, during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, people tend to navigate complex information environments marked by high levels of uncertainty. In such contexts, individuals may adopt maladaptive behaviours-for instance, avoiding information or switching to pseudo-epistemic coping-in which they engage with non-scientific explanations. As a consequence, they may learn less from their information environment and become susceptible to conspiracy theories. Against that background, we investigated how threat perceptions relate to learning, believing in conspiracy claims and conspiracy thinking in context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing from two-wave panel data, we found that threat perceptions were associated with a decrease in knowledge and an increase in believing conspiracy claims. click here Taken together, our findings indicate that high levels of threat perceptions in uncertain information environments may impede societal learning and encourage conspiracy beliefs. Thus, although provoking general anxiety may support short-term political goals, including adherence to policy during crises, accumulated threat perceptions may adversely affect citizens' motivation to cooperate in the long term.Meaning making is a useful coping strategy in negative situations. We investigated whether making meaning in negative experiences (MINE) would help people cope with COVID-19. We conducted a three-wave longitudinal study (N = 2364) three months before, during, and after the COVID-19 outbreak in China. Results showed that participants reported increased tendency of MINE during the COVID-19 outbreak than three months before the outbreak. Moreover, both initial MINE and the increased MINE predicted less psychological distress including depression, anxiety and stress, during and three months after the outbreak. Perceived benefits and costs of the COVID-19 mediated the long-term effect of MINE. In March 2020, World health organization (WHO) expressed fears that Pakistan might emerge as the next epicenter of corona virus infectious disease 2019 (COVID-19). Since proper preventive and curative measures are currently unavailable, only remedy is self-isolation which necessitates ample awareness among people. In this regard, Pakistan faces a unique challenge as it is a populous country with a record of contagious outbreaks in the past. All the universities, along with other educational institutions, are closed down until 19 December 2020. Such measures, however, have the potential to cause and exacerbate the mental stress in people, especially the students. The study aimed to explore the triggering factors which increase the mental stress of the students of both public and private universities amid COVID-19 pandemic. To that end, 1000 students of different public and private universities of the country were surveyed online. Under this study, a quantitative approach was undertaken to infer information from relevant variables through the use of descriptive analysis. Moreover, several virtual Key Informant Interview (KII) sessions were conducted with university teachers, education scholars and psychosocial counselor to get expert views on an effective education system, safeguard of the students and suggestions to reduce the stress of them. The survey result shows that students of private universities (80.6%) were found more mentally stressed than students of public universities (77%). Students of public universities were particularly stressed because of financial crisis and looming university session jam whereas, students of private universities were mentally stressed because of uncertainties of online classes/or activities and high tuition fees. Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) model has been adopted to develop a theoretical foundation for the research. Qualitative research methodology including a combination of personal interviews and focus groups has been adopted in the study to develop the themes with the help of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software, Atlas.
