Adsorption kinetics showed that sulfamethoxazole fitted with pseudo-first-order adsorption model, while trimethoprim, amoxicillin, oxytetracycline and clarithromycin fitted the pseudo-second-order model. All antibiotics fitted the Langmuir model according to the isotherm experiment. To date, this is the first study evaluating the removal of antibiotics by GAC sandwich biofilters. Overall, this research will provide useful information which can be used for optimising or updating existing biofiltration processes in industry to reduce antibiotic residues from source water.Mobilization of phosphorus (P) in arable soils might be affected by groundwater fluctuations and the associated changes in redox potential (EH). However, the impact of systematic changes of EH on P mobilization in redoximorphic arable soils along a catena has not been studied so far. Therefore, we investigated P mobilization under different redox conditions in top- and sub-soil horizons of three groundwater affected arable soils along a slight slope (toe-, mid-, and upper-slope position) in Northern Germany using an automated biogeochemical microcosm system. The impact of pH, Al, Fe, Mn, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) on P mobilization was also studied. The initial EH (+351 to +431 mV) and pH (6.5-7.0) decreased in all soil samples (EH = -280 mV; pH = 4.4) when creating a slurry. Thereafter, the pH increased to 7.1 and 6.4 with increasing EH in the mid-and toe-slope soil, respectively. Concentrations of dissolved P ranged between 20.8 mg L-1 under low EH in the toe slope topsoil and 0.69 mg L-1 under high EH in the toe- and mid-slop subsoil. Concentrations (mg L-1) of dissolved Fe (0.31-13.3) and DOC (92-2651) increased under low EH and decreased under high EH. The increase of P mobilization under low EH and pH in the soils might be due to the release of P via the reductive and acidic dissolution of Fe-(oxhydr)oxides and/or due to soil organic matter mineralization. The high mobilization of P under reducing conditions may increase its bioavailability; however, it may increase its loss in the soils, particularly in the toe slope profile.Tebuconazole (TEB) is a triazole fungicide widely used in agriculture known to cause metabolic and endocrine disorders in mammals. Several plant extracts have shown to be beneficial against pesticide effects due to their hepatoprotective, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. As fruit bats play a critical role in rainforest regeneration and are constantly exposed to pesticides, we aimed at evaluating TEB-induced toxicity and the possible protective effect of the Ficus carica plant extract in Neotropical fruit-eating bats (Artibeus lituratus). Bats were captured and assigned to 4 experimental groups, offered 1) CTL (n = 6) papaya; 2) DMSO (n = 6) papaya treated with 1.25% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO); 3) TEB (n = 6) papaya treated with tebuconazole (commercial formulation) 0.1%; and 4) TEBFC (n = 6) papaya treated with tebuconazole 0.1% and Ficus carica extract (20%) in DMSO (1.25%). After seven days of exposure, TEB bats showed increased lipid peroxidation, increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities, vascular congestion and inflammatory infiltrate in the liver, and increased serum transaminase enzyme activities. We found the same alterations in oxidative stress parameters in the breast muscles of TEB-exposed bats. In the testes, all oxidative stress markers were increased in TEB bats and corroborate findings of histopathological and increased serum testosterone levels observed following TEB exposure. The co-administration of the fungicide with the F. carica plant extract attenuated most oxidative stress markers in exposed bats' liver and testes and decreased liver damage, but failed to revert the steroid imbalance caused by the fungicide exposure.The recurring inundation of beaches in the tropical North Atlantic by pelagic Sargassum and the associated social, ecological and economic challenges, have aroused great interest in its potential use as a marine energy crop. However, to date, the seasonal availability and low experimental methane potential of these invasive brown seaweeds have hindered their commercial exploitation as feedstock for sustainable energy production. This novel study evaluated Caribbean pelagic Sargassum and the synergistic interactions of hydrothermal pretreatment and co-digestion with food waste at different mixture ratios, on biogas production enhancement and bio-fertiliser recovery. AT-527 Batch testing revealed that hydrothermal pretreatment promoted the hydrolysis of organics in pelagic Sargassum and food waste, thus increasing methane recovery from mono-substrate digestion by 212.57% and 10.16%, respectively, in comparison to the untreated samples. Co-digestion of pelagic Sargassum and food waste redistributed metal elements and raised the buffering capacity of the digester, facilitating high organic loadings without pH control. Food waste also provided lipids to the seaweed feed which augmented the digestion performance. The maximum cumulative methane yield of 292.18 ± 8.70 mL/gVS was obtained from a blend of co-pretreated pelagic Sargassum and food waste at the weight ratio 2575. Screening of the whole digestate from co-digestion indicated bio-fertiliser potential. However, the solid fraction necessitates arsenic remediation to meet international soil standard guidelines. The findings of this study are promising and suggest opportunity for the design, scale up and optimisation of biogas systems, equipped with hydrothermal pretreatment for utilisation of Sargassum seaweeds during influx.Several studies have shown a relationship between the distribution of fat mass around the organism, metabolic disorders, and an increased risk of morbidity and mortality. It has been demonstrated that in obese animals there is a big rise in the white fat deposits due to hyperplasia and hypertrophy of the adipocytes. Studies related to weight and health have been more popular regarding obesity rather than extreme caquexia or calorico-proteic deficiencies, but these states are interesting from the point of view of the preferential atrophy of certain organs that may help us in the understanding of undernourishment. Moreover, the discovery of beige adipose tissue has instigated thoughts around the roles played by the different cells in the adipose tissue as well as its adaptability in pathological states. In our study we carried out morphometric, morphological, and quantitative measurements of the adipose tissue in an animal model based on a 40-50% diet restriction in comparison to control animals. We have found a decrease in the size of white adipocytes together with a variation in the lipid droplet size of brown adipocytes in undernourished animals, what may be considered as possible transformations between the types of adipose tissues, and that could be caused by an adaptive phenomenon to the undernourished state.
