Nerves form synaptic-like contacts with mesenchymal cells or fibroblasts at the tip of the regenerating blastema but not synaptic boutons. These terminals may discharge stimulating factors that favor cell proliferation but this is not experimentally demonstrated. Most of the innervation is directed to differentiating muscles where nerve endings form cholinergic motor-plates. Transcriptome data on the regenerating blastema-cone detect up-regulation of various genes coding for ionic channels, neurotransmitter receptors and signaling proteins. The latter suggests that the neurotrophic stimulation may control cell proliferation but is most directed to the functionality of regenerating muscles. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.The Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) is a critically endangered mammal with a highly specialized diet. To enhance nutritional knowledge of its diet, we analyzed the colony composition of a nest of Polyrhachis dives ants, which is the key natural prey in the Chinese pangolin's diet. In addition, we determined the nutrient composition of the total colony compared with adult ants. Nutrients quantified in this study included crude protein, crude fat, carbohydrate, and amino acids, minerals, and vitamins, as well as formic acid and chitin, which have not been reported in previous diet studies. Our results showed that the colony consisted of adults (82%), pupae (10%), larvae (7%), and eggs (1%) (fresh mass). Both the total colony and adult ants, respectively, contained high concentrations of crude protein (62.97% and 64.68%), chitin (49.25% and 60.40%), crude fat (10.12% and 9.91%) (dry matter basis), and formic acid (2.06% and 3.07%) (fresh mass). This implies that Chinese pangolin might prefer prey with high protein, high chitin, low fat, and low formic acid content. Colony and adult ants differed in chemical composition in many aspects, thus it might be unsuitable to feed Chinese pangolin with only adult ants. Chitin and formic acid may play important roles in the diet and selectivity of Chinese pangolin. This study provides reference information that may be useful for developing better artificial diets with more comprehensive nutrient compositional data to meet the nutritional requirements of the Chinese pangolin under managed feeding programs.

In August 2019, the European Association of Urology (EAU) and European Society for Paediatric Urology (ESPU) published updated guidelines on the management of neurogenic bladder in children and adolescents. Our study aimed to establish whether members of the ESPU are adhering to these guidelines.

We designed a survey comprising 26 questions using SurveyMonkey®. click here Respondents were asked about management of neurogenic bladder at birth in newborns with spina bifida (SB), urological investigations, as well as short and long-term follow-up in their institutions.

There were 103 respondents to the survey (754 recipients, giving a response rate of 14%) spanning 36 countries. 100% of respondents carry out a renal/bladder ultrasound at birth. Only 53% routinely commence clean intermittent catheterization soon after birth as recommended by the guidelines. Only 56% recommend anticholinergic medications after abnormal videourodynamics (VUDs). The guidelines recommend the use of continued antibiotic prophylaxis if there is evidence of vesicoureteral reflux and hostile bladder/non-conclusive results on VUDs which is followed by only 30% of providers. 63% of respondents carry out baseline VUDs at the recommended time. Seeing larger volumes of SB patients, having a formal SB protocol, having formal SB multidisciplinary clinics and working in a tertiary referral center did not make respondents more likely to adhere to guidelines.

Our survey demonstrated that large variations from the EAU/ESPU guidelines exist in practice. The study confirms that further work is required across institutions and countries to implement these evidence-based recommendations for standardized practice.

Analyses of mammalian hybrids have identified skeletal effects of hybridization, including a suite of anomalous dental and sutural traits on the skull that are present at high frequencies in hybrid populations. These studies have also detected consistent patterns of morphological shape and size differences between hybrids and parental taxa across a wide variety of organisms. However, more research is required to understand the universality of these traits and shape/size differences. Building on these previous studies, a sample of genetically determined canid hybrids was examined, specifically the eastern coyote (Canis latrans var.), a hybrid between coyotes, wolves, and dogs, to test whether this group exhibits a comparable pattern of anomalous nonmetric characters, and to assess eeth may be lost after a few generations.Because people spend most of their time indoors, much of their exposure to ozone occurs in buildings, which are partially protective against outdoor ozone. Measurements in approximately 2000 indoor environments (residences, schools, and offices) show a central tendency for average indoor ozone concentration of 4-6 ppb and an indoor to outdoor concentration ratio of about 25%. Traumatic mating is generally a collateral side effect of diverse strategies (from physical anchorage to injection of substances to manipulate the partner), but the trauma could also be adaptive by itself if it delays remating by the injured partner. In the Tricladida (the clade of planarian flatworms), reciprocal sperm transfer is often assumed to occur by means of a 'regular' nontraumatic copulation, that is, insertion of the penis through the partner's gonopore and deposition of the ejaculate into its genital atrium, with subsequent sperm migration to the oviducts. However, while studying the anatomy of Brazilian land planarians for taxonomic purposes, we found foreign bodies, reminiscent of spermatophores, implanted within the parenchyma of Choeradoplana albonigra (Riester, 1938). Herein, we describe and illustrate several lines of morphological evidence indicating that these foreign bodies likely represent a novel case of intragenital copulatory wounding (e.g., structural and histochemical similarity to land planarians spermatophores; implantation at the level of the gonopore; vestiges of rupture of the genital atrium's wall), corroborating that traumatic mating is pervasive and underreported in Metazoa. We also propose two different hypotheses to explain such copulatory wounding, viz., that it concerns (1) a regular mating strategy or (2) an accidental effect of the copulation. In any event, this land planarian may prove useful as a novel, noninsect terrestrial model organism to investigate the evolution of traumatic mating.Marginalized older adults are highly vulnerable to COVID-19 due to social isolation and physical and functional limitations. Despite these stressors, they appear to be resilient by leveraging individual, community, and societal resources. This study conducted in-depth interviews with marginalized older adults to understand how COVID-19 affected their mobility and daily lives. We also identified different levels of protective factors affecting their resiliency to pandemic stressors. COVID-19 influenced not only the physical health but also the mental health of older adults. However, they overcame adversity by using technology to continue daily activities, exchanging informal support with family and neighbors, relying on formal support from community organizations, and keeping themselves physically active in their neighborhoods. Our findings suggest a holistic approach to enhance the resilience of older adults during an unprecedented event.Locally advanced or metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma no longer amenable to surgical resection or primary radiation therapy requires an alternative approach to treatment. Until 2018, management consisted of limited systemic chemotherapies, which carried marginal clinical benefit. The introduction of immunotherapy with anti-PD-1 antibodies resulted in alternative treatment options for advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma with substantial antitumor activity, durable response and acceptable safety profile. The field of immunotherapeutics continues to expand with adjuvant, neoadjuvant and intralesional studies currently in progress. Herein, the authors discuss their approach for the treatment of advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma from the perspective of a Mohs surgeon and a dermatologic oncologist.The purpose of this work is to develop an integrated imaging approach to characterize without labeling at the sub-cellular level the formation of lipid body droplets (LBs) in microalgae undergoing nitrogen starvation. First conventional optical microscopy approaches, gas chromatography, and turbidimetry measurements allowed to monitor the biomass and the total lipid content in the oleaginous microalgae Parachlorella kesslerii during the starvation process. Then a local analysis of the LBs was proposed using an innovative infrared nanospectroscopy technique called atomic force microscopy-based infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR). This label-free technique assessed the formation of LBs and allowed to look into the LB composition thanks to the acquisition of local infrared spectra. Last correlative measurements using fluorescence microscopy and AFM-IR were performed to investigate the subcellular reorganization of LB and the chloroplasts.Dyslipidemia has been associated with the development of osteoarthritis. Our previous study found that 5,7,3',4'-tetramethoxyflavone (TMF) exhibited protective activities against the pathological changes of osteoarthritis. Aim To investigate the roles of TMF in regulating ABCA1-mediated cholesterol metabolism. Methods Knockdown and overexpression were employed to study gene functions. Protein-protein interaction was investigated by co-immunoprecipitation, and the subcellular locations of proteins were studied by immunofluorescence. Results IL-1β decreased ABCA1 expression and induced apoptosis. Therapeutically, TMF ameliorated the effects of IL-1β. FOXO3a knockdown expression abrogated the effects of TMF, and FOXO3a overexpression increased ABCA1 expression by interacting with LXRα. TMF promoted FOXO3a nuclear translocation by activating SIRT1 expression. Conclusions TMF ameliorates cholesterol dysregulation by increasing the expression of FOXO3a/LXRα/ABCA1 signaling through SIRT1 in C28/I2 cells.
