Types of Deadlocks for Doors

Hook bolt deadlocks can be used on storefronts with narrow stiles made of aluminum sliding doors to enhance security and strength of the lock. These locks are keyed on both sides for greater flexibility in access control.

To accurately measure a new lock, first determine the door's case depth (or backset). This is the distance between the edge of the front door and the centre of latch hole.

Tubular Latch

The tubular latch is the most popular door latch. It is easy to install and popular with DIY enthusiasts as well as Joiners. It's also available in a broad variety of sizes, shapes, and levels to match any door handle style.

A tubular latch is an rectangular steel casing that has a latch bolt and a latch follower with springs (also known as a striker). When you open the door, the latch retracts to allow you to close and lock it. When you close the doors the latch bolt swivels back and grasps the edge of the frame to keep the door closed.

When you're fitting a tubular latch, you'll have to determine the height at which you want the latch to sit on the door. Many people assume that a metre from the floor is the ideal height to position a latch and door handle. This is not always the case. When hook locks for doors are involved the latch should be placed on the mid-rail, which is where most of the weight is carried when you open and close the door.

Once you've determined where the latch will be placed and where it will be, mark the location of the hole in the door and on the strike plate with the help of a pencil. Then drill pilot holes for the screws that are used to attach the plate to the door. After you've drilled your pilot holes, you can use countersinks to ensure that the plate's back will be in line with the door after it's been screwed.

You should consider a double-sprung lock for those who require a more durable alternative to the tubular lock. The door will close much more easily when you use this latch because it has an additional spring that moves the tongue. It also features a heavy-action spring on the spindle follower, ensuring that levers or doorknobs return to their horizontal positions following each use.

After you've attached the latch to the door, you'll have to install a strike plate onto the frame. The strike plate is a piece of metal that can be fitted into the space left behind by the latch after it has been closed. You should mark the area where you'd like to put the strike plate on the frame surrounding it. Use a knife to cut a square for the plate and then remove it.

Cylindrical Latch

Cylindrical locks are often used for doors in the interior. They are located in offices and homes, and are very versatile in their use. They are like mortise locks but they are easier and faster to set up. They don't require an opening pocket, or "mortise," to be cut into the door frame as mortise lock systems do. They are simply installed in the hole, or bore, that is cut into the door's face. These locks are available in various grades and can be used with knobs and levers to open and close the door.

The primary difference between mortise and cylinder locks is that these locks can only be opened with keys of a particular type. The pins are fixed by springs and pins of different sizes. When the correct key is inserted and the pins align themselves, allowing the cylinder to rotate. This allows the latch bolt to retract and the door can be opened.

When the wrong key is used in the wrong way, the pins don't align properly, and they prevent the piston from moving. This is the reason it's essential to select the correct key when you need to access your business or home.

The cylinder is situated inside the door's body and is connected to the operating trim with either a half-round or square extension. There are also small notch-like notches cut out of the cylinder's side that correspond to key notches, and they are designed to align when the correct key is inserted. Once the cylinder moves it will also move the latch bolt in tandem.

A strike plate is a metal plate that is attached to the door frame and captures the latch bolt that is projected from the lock. The strike plate is typically constructed from steel and is anchored in the door frame using screws. It also has a strike opening into which the latch bolt of the lock is inserted.

Use the right tools to remove the knob or handle of the lock that was previously used and the latch bolt. Note the place of the new latch bolt and strike on the frame and door after removing the old hardware. When the latch bolt and strike plate are in place, it's a good idea to test the operation of the lock by pressing against it with your fingers. If the latch bolt or strike plate are damaged or do not operate correctly it's a good idea to consider replacing them.

Key-Locked Latch

This kind of lock is controlled by a key on the outside, and a lever or knob on the inside. This kind of lock is used for doors that aren't at risk of being tampered with, for instance in offices. This type of lock permits the outside lever to be in locked or unlocked and the inside knob is always free for immediate egress. The key is needed only to re-lock the latch bolt after the door has been shut.

The pins in a keylock are pointed and lined up along a line that's called the shear line. When the key that is correct slides into a lock, these pins are aligned with shear line and the plug will be turned to release the latchbolt. If you've had a key that fits perfectly into a lock but cannot open it could be because one of the pins aren't aligned with the shear line.

Face plates are also used on some locks. They can be decorative or add strength and security to the locking mechanism. It is common to see these plates on mortice locks as well as rim locks with reversed spring bolts.

There is also a strike plate which is usually attached to the jamb and frame of the door and is fitted with a hole to guide the bolt from the cylinder to the lock. It is usually used with deadbolts to provide additional security.

The cylinder is the final part, and it holds pins that are aligned with the tip of the key to stop it from rotating. It can be difficult to choose a cylinder of good quality without the proper tools and the right knowledge. To lock a door the key has to be turned in the same direction the door is opened. If the door opens using the right hand, as in the case of, the key will need to be turned clockwise to secure the door. To unlock the door, the key needs to be turned counterclockwise. This differs from other locks, like Chubb locks, which require you to turn your key in the opposite direction of how the door opens.

Keyless Latch

With a keyless latch you can lock and unlock your doors without using a traditional key. The locks can be operated by a smartphone application or an access code. Certain models have cameras hidden in the door. When selecting a keyless lock take into consideration your security requirements and compatibility with your existing hardware and doors. Certain keyless locks require specific door preparation or modifications therefore, make sure to check the manufacturer's specifications and installation instructions prior to installing.

Many companies are working on smart locks that can replace traditional keys and provide additional security features. They can be opened with the use of a fingerprint, code, or facial recognition, and are usually more durable than traditional locks. Certain smart locks also come with tamper-proof features and can detect the moment a door was opened with an unauthorized key or force.

Latch is a company that has designed a sleek and high-tech lock that is similar to other smart locks. Its primary target market is realty companies which manage apartment blocks. The lock is unlocked by using a passcode, key or mobile phone, and renters can let in dog walkers, cleaners, or guests from out of town with temporary codes. The company claims that this eliminates the requirement for tenants to lose their keys, and reduces maintenance costs because there is no requirement to change locks when tenants move out.

The Latch lock isn't available to the general public yet however it may find a place in condos or apartments with large spaces. The company has already begun testing the lock in a handful of locations and plans to release more units this coming year. The price is roughly the same as a standard lock and the company also offers an affordable price and low fees for software.

You can alter the shortcuts at any time by using the Latch App. Start the app and then click the menu located in the upper left corner of the screen. Select 'Widgets' and select the doors you want to be displayed as shortcuts. You can check the access history of your doors in the Latch App once you have configured them.
