The phytohormones salicylic acid (SA) and ethylene (ET) are known to promote senescence. However, their relationship in this process is still unclear. We found that EIN3 and EIL1, two key transcription factors in ET signaling, are required for SA-induced leaf senescence in Arabidopsis. Furthermore, ET enhances the effect of SA in promoting senescence. Biochemical studies revealed that NPR1, the master regulator of SA signaling, interacts with EIN3 to promote its transcriptional activity. Our study suggests that SA and ET function coordinately in senescence, which is in contrast to their antagonistic crosstalk in other biological processes.
Concurrent epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKI) with radiotherapy in patients with EGFR-mutant unresectable stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) might improve survival. However, both treatments carry a potential risk of pneumonitis.
Between May 2012 and December 2017, patients with unresectable stage III NSCLC treated with concurrent radiotherapy and EGFR-TKI were enrolled in this retrospective study. The baseline characteristics were evaluated to determine correlations with toxicity development.
Among 45 eligible patients, 20 (44.4%) had an EGFR mutation and 44 (97.8%) received 50-66 Gy of radiotherapy. The median follow-up was 62.7 months. The median progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) for patients with EGFR-mutations were 27.9 (95% CI 18.7-37.2) and 49.7 (95% CI 27.7-71.8) months, and 13.8 (95% CI 8.8-18.9) and 31.1 (95% CI 9.8-52.4) months for EGFR wild-type/unknown patients. A total of 17 patients (37.7%) developed radiation pneumonitimoderate radiation pneumonitis incidence increased but no grade 4--5 adverse events occurred.

In this article, we review recent progress on the synthesis and structural control of HGNs and applications of their SPR properties in biomedical sensing and theranostics. Diagnosis delay in children and adolescents with cancer is a public health problem in Peru that leads to high rates of advanced disease and mortality. We aimed to assess the implementation feasibility and potential utility of ONCOpeds®, a mobile application that provides consultations with pediatric oncologists, in reducing the latency to diagnosis (LD) and referral time (RT) among children and adolescents in Peru diagnosed with cancer.
A prospective pilot study was conducted in the region of Callao between November 2017 and April 2018. Primary and secondary care providers were trained on the use of ONCOpeds in five educational sessions. Patients younger than 18 years who resided in Callao and were diagnosed with cancer at four pediatric cancer units in Lima were analyzed by referral type ONCOpeds facilitated or conventional.
ONCOpeds was successfully installed in the smartphones of 78 primary and secondary care providers of Callao. During the study period, 23 new cases of cancer in children and adolescents from the region were diagnosed. Ten patients received ONCOpeds-facilitated referrals and 13 received conventional referrals. The RT decreased among those who received ONCOpeds-facilitated referrals by 66% (P=0.02); however, the LD did not significantly decrease with the use of ONCOpeds.
The implementation of ONCOpeds was found to be feasible in this pilot study, having a potential utility in improving early diagnosis and referral in children and adolescents newly diagnosed with cancer. Directions for future research include multicenter studies with a larger population to further test the application's effectiveness.

We found that most Rb survivors adhered to general population cancer screening recommendations. Rates did not differ among Rb survivors and non-Rb controls, or among survivors by laterality, even though bilateral survivors reported higher levels of concern about future health and cancer risk. Older age, being overweight/obese, and lack of recent contact with medical personnel were independently associated with decreased utilization of Pap smear among female Rb survivors. Future studies are warranted to determine whether these associations might provide an opportunity for intervention.Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a rare plasma cell tumor involving the organs but without bone marrow involvement or the characteristics of multiple myeloma. Primary solitary endobronchial plasmacytoma is extremely rare. Here we present the case of an 86-year-old male ex-smoker who visited our outpatient clinic for an endobronchial mass in the left upper lobe of the lung. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed a protruding mass in the left upper lobar bronchus; based on the bronchoscopic biopsy findings, a primary solitary endobronchial plasmacytoma was diagnosed. After radiation therapy the patient was well and 6 months after treatment showed no evidence of disease recurrence. Extramedullary plasmacytoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of an endobronchial mass.This study was performed to evaluate the antioxidant, anticancer, and toxicity properties of ferutinin, a phytoestrogen derived from Ferula species. The human Michigan Cancer Foundation-7 (MCF-7) breast cancer cell line and normal human fibroblast (HDF) were cultured and treated with different ferutinin concentrations. The cell viability was evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and cell death-defining tests (a comparative real-time polymerase chain reaction [for Bax and Bcl-2 genes], flow cytometry, and acridine orange/propidium iodide cell staining). Moreover, 15 white male balb/c mice were divided into three groups of five (one untreated control group and two groups), which received different doses of ferutinin-supplemented water (500 and 1000 µg/kg mice weight) to check the mice liver and kidney pathomorphological alterations and to determine the antioxidant enzymes' expression profile (superoxide dismutase [SOD], catalase [CAT], and glutathione peroxidase) in the mentioned tissues. Finally, the liver lipid peroxidation of mice was analyzed. The results of MTT and cell death-defining tests indicate the significant reduction in cell viability and induction of apoptotic death in MCF-7 cells (enhanced sub-G1 peaks, Bax overexpression, Bcl-2 downregulation, and increased apoptotic cells). The antioxidant enzymes (SOD and CAT) in the mice liver and kidney cells were found to be upregulated (p less then .05) in response to the increasing doses of ferutinin. Besides, the lipid peroxidation of the liver tissue of mice was significantly reduced. According to the results, we suggest that ferutinin has the potential to be served as a selective anticancer compound for breast cancer treatment.
Within pediatric oncology, parental decision making regarding participation in clinical trials that aim to reduce therapy to mitigate side effects is not well studied. The recently completed Children's Oncology Group trial for standard-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia (AALL0932) included a reduction in maintenance therapy, and required consent for randomization immediately prior to starting maintenance. At our institution, 40% of children enrolled on AALL0932 were withdrawn from protocol therapy prior to randomization due to parental choice. This study sought to identify factors that impacted parental decision making regarding randomization on AALL0932.
Parents of children enrolled on AALL0932 at our institution were eligible if their child met criteria for the average-risk randomization. Parents were invited to participate in a 30-50-minute phone interview. Questions focused on factors that shaped parental decision making about randomization, as well as their perspectives about the clinical trial experiure clinical trials.
Although the burden of influenza is well characterized, the burden of community-onset non-influenza respiratory viruses has not been systematically assessed. Understanding the severity and seasonality of non-influenza viruses, including human coronaviruses, will provide a better understanding of the overall disease burden from respiratory viruses that could better inform resource utilization for hospitals and highlight the value of preventative strategies, including vaccines.
From October 2017 to September 2019, a retrospective study was performed in a pre-defined catchment area to estimate the population-based incidence of community-onset respiratory viruses associated with hospitalization. Included patients were ≥18years old, resided in New York City, were hospitalized for ≥24hours, and had a respiratory virus detected within 3 calendar-days of admission. Disease burden was measured by hospital length of stay (LOS), intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, and in-hospital mortality and compared among thoseolder adults.
Biliary rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the most common biliary tumor in children. The biliary tract is classified as a favorable primary site. Therefore, patients with localized biliary RMS were included in two consecutive low-risk studies, D9602 and ARST0331, by the Children's Oncology Group (COG). The outcome for these patients treated with low-risk therapy has not been reported.
Patients with biliary RMS enrolled on COG low-risk trials D9602 or ARST0331 were analyzed. All patients received systemic chemotherapy and those with Group II (microscopic residual) or Group III (macroscopic residual) disease received 36-50.4Gy adjuvant radiotherapy (RT). Delayed primary excision (DPE) was allowed on both studies.
Seventeen patients with biliary RMS were treated on D9602 (n=7) or ARST0331 (n=10). Median age was 3.5years (range 1.7-10.3). Ten (59%) patients had tumors >5cm and 14 (82%) had Group III disease. Fifteen (88%) patients received RT. The 5-year event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) were 70.
