The present review thus discusses the possibilities as to whether antioxidant drugs would contribute to combating the SARS-CoV-2 infection-induced male reproductive disruptions, thereby aiming at kindling research ideas that are needed for identification and treatment of COVID-19-mediated male reproductive impairments.Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias are becoming increasingly common in the older population, and the number of people affected is expected to increase in a few years. Nowadays, biomarkers used in early AD diagnosis are expensive and invasive. Therefore, this research field is growing. In fact, peroxidation by-products derived from the oxidation of brain lipids (arachidonic (AA), docosahexanoic (DHA) and adrenic acid (AdA)) could be potential biomarkers, participating in the mechanisms of inflammation, neurotoxicity and cell death in AD pathology. Previous studies have shown specificity between lipid peroxidation compounds and other dementias (e.g., Lewy bodies (DLB), frontotemporal dementia (FTD)), but more research is required. Selenium is a part of a number of antioxidant enzymes. The monocrotaline inducible model of pulmonary hypertension used in this study includes pathological links that may act as an application for the use of ubiquinol with high bioavailability and selenium metabolic products. On day 1, male and female rats were subcutaneously injected with a water-alcohol solution of monocrotaline or only water-alcohol solution. On days 7 and 14, some animals were intravenously injected with either ubiquinol's vehicle or solubilized ubiquinol, or orally with selenium powder daily, starting from day 7, or received both ubiquinol + selenium. From the variety of compounds present in the oil, phenols stand out, not only for producing the bitter-pungent perception but also for their antioxidant properties, which contribute to human health protection. The addition of plants can change the phenolic profile due to a migration of plant antioxidants to the oil. The aim of this work was to study the evolution of the oxidative process of extra virgin olive oil under mild storage conditions for 8 months, monitoring the individual content of 15 phenols by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and the changes of the phenolic profile of the non-flavoured oil compared with the same flavoured (rosemary and basil) oil. The oxidative alteration was more marked in virgin than in flavoured oils, where it happened slowly. Throughout storage, the behaviour of the phenols varied, resulting in a decrease in their concentration, except in the case of tyrosol and hydroxytyrosol. The addition of plants had an antioxidant effect, slowing down the oxidative process, which prolongs the shelf life of the flavoured oil compared to the unflavoured oil. Storage at low-temperature of blood oranges has been proven to be a feasible postharvest strategy to increase anthocyanins in those countries with warm climates. To our knowledge, no studies comparing the effect of postharvest storage effect on phenylpropanoid accumulation in cultivars with and without anthocyanins production have been published. We have investigated the effect of postharvest cold storage in flavonoid accumulation in juice from Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck in two different oranges Pera, a blond cultivar, and Moro, a blood one. Our findings indicate a different response to low-temperature of fruit from both cultivars at biochemical and molecular levels. We show that postharvest storage enhances not only anthocyanins but also other flavonoids accumulation in blood oranges (but not in blond ones), further stimulating the interest in blood orange types in antioxidant-rich diets.Mycobacterium abscessus is one of the common clinical non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) that can cause severe skin infection. 5-Aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA_PDT) is an emerging effective antimicrobial treatment. To explore whether ALA_PDT can be used to treat M. abscessus infections, we conducted a series of experiments in vitro. We found that ALA_PDT can kill M. abscesses. Mechanistically, we found that ALA_PDT promoted ferroptosis-like death of M. abscesses, and the ROS scavenger N-Acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) and ferroptosis inhibitor Ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) can mitigate the ALA_PDT-mediated sterilization. Furthermore, ALA_PDT significantly up-regulated the transcription of heme oxygenase MAB_4773, increased the intracellular Fe2+ concentration and altered the transcription of M. abscessus iron metabolism genes. ALA_PDT disrupted the integrity of the cell membrane and enhanced the permeability of the cell membrane, as evidenced by the boosted sterilization effect of antibiotics. In summary, ALA_PDT can kill M. abscesses via promoting the ferroptosis-like death and antibiotic sterilization through oxidative stress by changing iron metabolism. The study provided new mechanistic insights into the clinical efficacy of ALA_PDT against M. abscessus.Nitrite concentrations can reach high levels in indoor aquaculture systems, thus it is vital to determine the nitrite tolerance of aquaculture fish species. Here, juvenile hybrid groupers (Epinephelus lanceolatus ♂ × Epinephelus fuscoguttatus ♀, Family Serranidae) were exposed to waterborne nitrite at 0, 10, 20, 40, and 80 mg NO2-/L for 2 weeks. Nitrite exposure caused significant reductions in hematocrit and hemoglobin levels, significant increases in plasma calcium and plasma ALP levels, but had no significant effects on magnesium and total protein levels. Of the antioxidant responses investigated, SOD activity increased significantly in the liver and gills, but GST activity and GSH levels were significantly inhibited by nitrite exposure. Stress indicators, such as plasma cortisol and HSP 70 levels, were significantly stimulated by nitrite exposure. In the present study, Hibiscus acidified ethanolic extract was reported to have a total anthocyanin content of about 359.3 mg cyanidin 3-glucoside/100 g DW, total polyphenol concentration (TPC) of about 598 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/100 g DW, and total flavonoids (TFs) of about 100 mg quercetin equivalent (QE)/100 g DW. Endothelial dysfunction (ED) has been implicated to play a crucial role in the development of neurodegeneration in the CNS. The retina is known as an extension of the CNS. Stress and endothelium dysfunction are suspected to be interlinked and associated with neurodegenerative diseases in the retina as well. In this narrative review, we explore the role of OS-led ED in the retina by focusing on mechanistic links between OS and ED, ED in the pathophysiology of different retinal neurodegenerative conditions, and how a better understanding of the role of endothelial function could lead to new therapeutic approaches for neurodegenerative diseases in the retina.Weaning stress affects the health and performance of calves. L-glutamine (L-Gln) is commonly used as a functional antioxidant and energy supplement in the body. However, dietary L-Gln supplementation improving weaning stress of calves is unclear. Thus, we aimed to explore the effects of L-Gln (provided by rumen-protected L-Gln) on calves during weaning. Seventy-five Holstein calves (54.0 ± 2.68 kg; 42 ± 2.1 d of age) were assigned to five groups no supplementation and L-Gln with 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4% dry matter daily intake (DMI) supplementation groups, respectively. The experiment lasted for 28 days (42-70 d of age of calves), and the calves were weaned at 15 d of experiment. DMI and body weekly weight of all calves were recorded. Blood samples of nine healthy calves with similar body weight were collected from each group at 0, 7, 14, 16, 18, 21, and 28 d of experiment for detecting serum L-Gln, glucose, insulin, urea nitrogen, D-lactate, cortisol, haptoglobin, interleukin-8, immunoglobulin (Ig) G, IgA, IgM, total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and malondialdehyde.
