Estrogen is a pivotal signaling molecule; its production is regulated by the expression of the aromatase (CYP19A1) gene from ovarian and peripheral tissue sites, and it is transmitted via estrogen receptors to influence many important biological functions. However, the narrative for this overview focuses on the decline of 17β-estradiol levels from ovarian sites after menopause. This estrogen-deficient condition is associated with a dramatic reduction in skin health and wellness by negatively impacting dermal cellular and homeostatic mechanisms, as well as other important biological functions. The changes include loss of collagen, elastin, fibroblast function, vascularity, and increased matrix metalloproteinase(s) enzymatic activities, resulting in cellular and extracellular degradation that leads to dryness, wrinkles, atrophy, impaired wound healing/barrier function, decreased antioxidant capacity [i.e., defense against reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress], decreased attractiveness and psychological health, and increased perception of aging. While topical estrogen may reverse these changes, the effects of today's low-dose systemic hormone treatments are not well established, raising the need for more concentrated local administration of hormones or newer cosmeceutical agents such as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), including phytoestrogens that have become major active ingredients for skin care products, especially when addressing estrogen-deficient skin. Two example compounds are presented, an analog of resveratrol (i.e., 4'-acetoxy resveratrol) and the isoflavonoid equol, both of which are involved in a variety of biochemical/molecular actions and mechanisms, as demonstrated via in vitro and clinical studies that enhance human dermal health, especially in estrogen-deficient skin.Although temperature is a crucial factor affecting enzymatic activity on biochemical and biofuel production, the reaction temperature for the generation of these products is usually set at the optimal growth temperature of the host strain, even under non-proliferative conditions. Given that the production of fermentation products only requires a fraction of the cell's metabolic pathways, the optimal temperatures for microbial growth and the fermentative production of a target compound may be different. Here, we investigated the effect of temperature on lactic and succinic acids production, and related enzymatic activities, in wild-type and succinic acid-overproducing strains of Corynebacterium glutamicum. Interestingly, fermentative production of lactic acid increased with the temperature in wild-type production was 69% higher at 42.5 °C, a temperature that exceeded the upper limit for growth, than that at the optimal growth temperature (30 °C). Conversely, succinic acid production was decreased by 13% under the same conditions in wild-type. The specific activity of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase decreased with the increase in temperature. In contrast, the other glycolytic and reductive TCA cycle enzymes demonstrated increased or constant activity as the temperature was increased. When using a succinic acid over-producing strain, succinic acid production was increased by 34% at 42.5 °C. Our findings demonstrate that the profile of fermentation products is dependent upon temperature, which could be caused by the modulation of enzymatic activities. Moreover, we report that elevated temperatures, exceeding the upper limit for cell growth, can be used to increase the production of target compounds in C. glutamicum. General linear model, frequency, and multivariate analysis procedures of Statistical Analysis Software (SAS 9.0) were used to analyze the data by splitting and merging the sexes. Stepwise discriminanya cattle were also revealed.This study investigated the temporal changes of PBDEs in the sediment cores from the Anhui Province section of Yangtze River (YR), China. The dramatic increase of ∑Br3-Br9-BDEs and BDE-209 concentrations in cores in the period of ca. 1990-2008 was consistent with the booming of regional and national production and consumption of household appliances and electronics. Following declines in BDE-209 and ∑Br3-Br9-BDEs concentrations can be associated with the deceasing use of legacy commercial PBDE mixtures in recent years. Compared with the different regions around the world, sediments in the YR were moderately polluted by PBDEs. The levels and the detection rates of BDE-209 were highest among the detected PBDEs single congener. The composition analysis indicated that Deca-BDE, Octa-BDE, and Penta-BDE were the dominant forms in the YR. The increasing trends of both BDE-209 and ∑Br3-Br9-BDEs in the YR during 1990s and 2000s largely reflected the time periods for transferring PBDE sources from the developed countries to China. TOC and finer particles were strongly correlated with distributions of PBDEs in sediments.The sizeable number of population-based cohort studies of aging in Germany have provided highly valuable contributions for the specification of risk factors and predictors for frequent mental disorders in old age, especially dementia and depression. The results from these cohort studies enable the specification of mechanisms for the development of and preventative interventions for common mental disorders in old age. On the other hand, there is a significant paucity of clinical cohort studies investigating disease trajectories and possible markers for specific individualized interventions of frequent mental disorders in old age. In this article, we report selected key findings from cohort studies of aging and discuss novel approaches for the integration and harmonization of population-based and clinical cohort studies.
