Previous behavioural and neuroimaging research suggested distinct cortical systems involved in processing abstract and concrete semantics; however, there is a dearth of causal evidence to support this. To address this, we applied anodal, cathodal, or sham (placebo) tDCS over Wernicke's area before a session of contextual learning of novel concrete and abstract words (n = 10 each), presented five times in short stories. Learning effects were assessed at lexical and semantic levels immediately after the training and, to attest any consolidation effects of overnight sleep, on the next day. We observed successful learning of all items immediately after the session, with decreased performance in Day 2 assessment. Importantly, the results differed between stimulation conditions and tasks. Whereas the accuracy of semantic judgement for abstract words was significantly lower in the sham and anodal groups on Day 2 vs. Day 1, no significant performance drop was observed in the cathodal group. Similarly, the cathodal group showed no significant overnight performance reduction in the free recall task for either of the stimuli, unlike the other two groups. Furthermore, between-group analysis showed an overall better performance of both tDCS groups over the sham group, particularly expressed for abstract semantics and cathodal stimulation. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of common comorbidities in patients with COPD compared with people without COPD. This cross-sectional, population-based study was performed on 6961 adults aged 35-70 years enrolled in the Shahrekord PERSIAN cohort study. Data (demographic and clinical characteristics, comorbidities, anthropometric and blood pressure measurements, laboratory, and spirometry tests) collection was performed according to the cohort protocol from 2015 to 2019. In the present study, 215 (3.1%) patients were diagnosed with COPD and 1753 (25.18%) ones with restrictive lung patterns. The mean age of COPD patients was 52.5 ± 9.76 years. 55.8% of patients were male, 17.7% were current smokers and 12.1% had a history of smoking or were former smokers. 5.6% of patients had no comorbidity and 94.5% had at least one comorbidity. The most common comorbidities in COPD patients were dyslipidemia (70.2%), hypertension (30.2%), metabolic syndrome (22.8%), and diabetes (16.7%). The most common comorbidities in individuals with a restrictive spirometry pattern were dyslipidemia (68.9%), metabolic syndrome (27.2%), hypertension (26.1%), depression (17.6%), and fatty liver (15.5%). The logistic regression analysis with 95% confidence interval (95%CI) of odds ratio (OR) showed that comorbidities of chronic lung diseases (OR = 2.12, 95% CI 1.30-3.44), diabetes (OR = 1.54, 95%CI 1.03-2.29), cardiovascular disease (OR = 1.52, 95%CI 1.17-2.43), and hypertension (OR = 1.4, 95%CI 1.02-1.99) were more likely to occur in COPD patients than in healthy individuals. In the current study, using behavioral (Categorical Perception) and electrophysiological (Frequency Following Response) measures, we investigated the effect of the combination of AP and tone language experience on lexical tone perception. We found that the Cantonese speakers with AP outperformed the Cantonese speakers without AP on Categorical Perception and Frequency Following Responses of lexical tones, suggesting an additive effect due to the combination of AP and tone language experience. These findings suggest a role of basic sensory pre-attentive auditory processes towards pitch encoding in AP. Anadromous fish migrations can have broad scale impacts on human communities and marine, aquatic and terrestrial food webs. However, isolating the effects of climate change on the timing of life stage transitions for anadromous fish species is challenging. Striped bass (Morone saxatilis) exhibit striking variation in migration patterns within their natural range, including migratory behaviors that change with latitude, and climate-induced temperature changes are predicted to drive future habitat and distribution changes. Here we explore the linkages between migration and multiple components of coastal and inland aquatic ecosystems impacted by climate change. By leveraging environmental and fisheries monitoring which began in 1969, we describe the upstream migration timing of non-native adult Striped bass influenced by estuary outflow and sea surface temperature in the San Francisco Bay-Delta, California. Striped bass migrated later in years when Delta outflow was greater and sea surface temperature was cooler. It is likely that temperature thresholds in the ocean during the springtime provide a cue for Striped bass to initiate migration, but sea surface temperature may also represent composite climatic trends influencing Striped bass. Further, the observed variation in migration timing of adult Striped bass has implications for predation risk on the seaward-migration of juvenile Chinook salmon.Lupus nephritis (LN) is a life-threatening complication of systemic lupus erythematosus. The 2003 pathological classification of LN was revised in 2016; it quantitatively evaluates the interstitium in addition to the glomeruli. We performed a retrospective multi-centre cohort study and investigated the utility of the 2016 classification-including the activity index (AI), chronicity index (CI), and each pathological component to predict complete remission or renal function decline, defined as 1.5-fold increase in serum creatinine levels-and compare with that of the 2003 classification. Ninety-one consecutive adult patients with first-onset class III/IV LN who were newly prescribed any immunosuppressants were enrolled and followed up for a median of 51 months from January 2004. Cox regression analysis demonstrated the subclasses based on the 2003 classification, which mainly evaluate glomerular lesions, were not associated with clinical outcomes. After adjustments for estimated glomerular filtration rate and urinary protein levels, higher CI and higher interstitial fibrosis and lower hyaline deposit scores were associated with renal functional decline. Similarly, higher CI and interstitial inflammation scores were associated with failure to achieve complete remission. The current study represents 15,115 Illumina sequenced contigs of the salivary gland transcriptome from male and female Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi ticks of early, mid and late feeding stages from 1320 separate assemblies using three short read assemblers. The housekeeping functional class contributed to the majority of the composition of the transcriptome (80%) but with lower expression (51%), while the secretory protein functional class represented only 14% of the transcriptome but 46% of the total coverage. Six percent had an unknown status contributing 3% of the overall expression in the salivary glands. Platelet aggregation inhibitors, blood clotting inhibitors and immune-modulators orthologous to the ancestral tick lineages were confirmed in the transcriptome and their differential expression during feeding in both genders observed.
