This study aimed to explore and compare families' and professionals' perspectives on the implementation of family-centered care (FCC) (Moeller, Carr, Seaver, Stredler-Brown, & Holzinger, 2013) during the period between diagnosis of hearing loss (HL) and enrollment in early intervention (EI). A convergent mixed-methods study incorporating self-report questionnaires and semistructured in-depth interviews was used. Seventeen family members of children with HL and the 11 professionals who support these families participated in this study. The results suggested that the services engaged during the transition period partially adhered to the principles of FCC, including the provision of timely access to EI services and provision of emotional and social support. However, areas for improvement identified include strengthening family/professional partnerships, shared decision-making processes, collaborative teamwork, program monitoring, and consistency in the provision of information and support. Qualitative and quantitative research findings also indicated a lack of consistency in service provision during the transition period.

Prolonged air leaks following lung injury cause extended hospital stays. This study investigated the effect of nutritional supplements containing arginine, glutamine and β-hydroxy β-methyl butyrate, which were theoretically proven to accelerate wound healing, on air leak and wound healing parameters in a rat lung injury model.

Twenty-eight female rats were randomly divided into 4 groups. Experimental groups were given glutamine (Resource Glutamine®) or a mixture of arginine, glutamine and β-hydroxy β-methyl butyrate (Abound®) as a dietary supplement at isonitrogenous and isocaloric doses. On day 3, standard sized lung injuries were created in all rats except the sham group. The rats were sacrificed on day 6, and the lungs were removed for air-leak threshold pressure measurement and histopathological and biochemical analyses.

Loss of body mass was greater in the glutamine group than in the other groups (P = 0.004). Rats that received the amino acid mixture had better results for mature collagen fibre density (P = 0.002) and inflammation suppression (P = 0.003). The sham group had higher values for air-leak threshold pressure and all other histochemical parameters compared to the other groups. Hydroxyproline level did not differ significantly in any of the groups.

Our results indicated that an oral amino acid mixture was effective in the healing of lung injuries. Isolated glutamine supplementation had an adverse impact on body mass. Randomized clinical studies including larger series are needed. Hydroxyproline does not seem to be a suitable marker for this purpose.

To evaluate the burden of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) in a large cohort, determine the right ventricle involvement of patients with TR and determine the characteristics of isolated TR.

Prospective study where consecutive patients undergoing an echocardiographic study in 10 centres were included. selleck inhibitor All studies with significant TR (at least moderate) were selected. We considered that patients with one of pulmonary systolic hypertension >50 mmHg, left ventricular ejection fraction <35%, New York Heart Association III-IV, or older than 85 years, had a high surgical risk. A total of 35088 echocardiograms were performed. Significant TR was detected in 6% of studies. Moderate TR was found in 69.6%, severe in 25.5%, massive in 3.9%, and torrential in 1.0% of patients. Right ventricle was dilated in 81.7% of patients with massive/torrential TR, in 55.9% with severe TR, and in 29.3% with moderate TR (P < 0.001). Primary TR was present in 7.4% of patients whereas secondary TR was present in 92.6%. Mitral or aortic valve disease was the most common aetiology (54.6%), following by isolated TR (16%). Up to 51.9% of patients with severe, massive, or torrential primary TR and 57% of patients with severe, massive, or torrential secondary TR had a high surgical risk.

Significant TR is a prevalent condition and a high proportion of these patients have an indication for valve intervention. More than a half of patients with severe, massive, or torrential TR had a high surgical risk. Massive/torrential TR may have implications regarding selection and monitoring patients for percutaneous treatment.

Even though the etiological causes of WB myopathy are still unknown or partially understood, the intensive genetic selection for rapid-growth rates and high yields in broilers may be the main factor associated with the development of this abnormality. The severity of this anomaly and its incidence rates are associated with fast-growing and heavier broilers, especially with those from high breast yielding strains. Such WB myopathy is primarily characterized by a notorious hardness in broiler breast muscles, which exhibit morphometric and histopathological alterations coupled with physicochemical abnormalities that result in undesired sensory, nutritional, and technological properties. In this negative context, although scientists are trying to solve or reduce the prevalence of this meat quality problem, the poultry industry needs noncontact and rapid in-line methods for WB detection at the fillet and/or carcass level that could help to establish automated objective grading or sorting systems according to its severity. Another need is the development and selection of profitable alternatives for the utilization of WB meat once poultry carcasses or deboned fillets affected by this abnormality are objectively detected and sorted. Indeed, there is a need for studies to expand the industrial applications of WB meat in further processed products, optimizing the incorporation of this affected chicken meat based on sensorial, technological, and nutritional profile evaluations. Even though a better understanding of the contribution of genetic and nongenetic factors to the development of growth-related myopathies can be the main strategy to mitigate their negative effects, the poultry industry could benefit from meeting the aforementioned needs.
