The distribution and composition of organic pollutants in sediment are affected by the source and regional environment. To understand the characteristics and risk of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the area around Taihu Lake, composite sediment samples (n = 41) were collected in rivers around Taihu Lake to explore the level, spatial distribution, and source of PBDEs. The results showed that the most abundant BDE congener in river sediment was BDE209, followed by BDE99 and BDE47, with median values of 48.7, 2.17, and 1.52 ng g-1, respectively. Concentrations of PBDEs in sediments from northern rivers were significantly higher than those from other areas, but the overall risk was at a moderate-lower level compared with research results in other references. Results of principle component analysis (PCA) and source characteristics analysis revealed that most of PBDEs in river sediments around Taihu Lake were mixture of multiple sources, which mainly originated from atmospheric deposition, industrial wastewater, and municipal sewage. TOC showed good correlations with most PBDEs, which implied that PBDE components were influenced by sediment organic matter. Meanwhile, the risk of PBDEs in river sediments in this study area is a moderate-lower level.Ixodes acer n. sp., Ixodes giluwensis n. sp., Ixodes mirzai n. sp., Ixodes planiscutatus n. sp. and Ixodes stellae n. sp. (Acari Ixodidae), are described based on females ex various marsupials (Dasyuromorphia Dasyuridae, Diprotodontia Petauridae, Peramelemorphia Peramelidae), rodents (Rodentia Muridae) and a bird (Galliformes Megapodiidae) from Indonesia (Papua Province) and Papua New Guinea. Females of all new species are similar to those of I. luxuriosus Schulze, 1935, I. steini Schulze, 1935 and I. zaglossi Kohls, 1960, but can be distinguished from them and each other by the distinctness of lateral carinae and cervical grooves on the scutum, length of setae on the idiosoma, sculpture of the basis capituli and palpal segment I dorsally, size of the dorsal cornua, shape and sculpture of the palpal segment I ventrally, size of ventral spur on the palpal segment I, dental formula on the hypostome and measurements of various structures and their proportions. For comparative purposes the female of I. luxuriosus, I. steini and I. zaglossi is redescribed and lectotypes for I. luxuriosus and I. steini have been designated. Studied females of I. luxuriosus, I. steini and I. zaglossi were found on marsupials (Dasyuromorphia Dasyuridae; Diprotodontia Macropodidae, Petauridae, Phalangeridae, Pseudocheiridae; Peramelemorphia Peramelidae), rodents (Rodentia Muridae) and echidnas (Monotremata Tachyglossidae) in Indonesia (Papua Province) and Papua New Guinea.Chimaeras, or ratfishes, are the only extant group of holocephalan fishes and are the sole host group of gyrocotylidean cestodes, which represent a sister group of the true tapeworms (Eucestoda). These unique, non-segmented cestodes have been known since the 1850s and multiple species and genera have been erected despite a general agreement that the delineation of species on the basis of morphology is effectively impossible. Thus, in the absence of molecular studies, the validity of gyrocotylid taxa and their specific host associations has remained highly speculative. Here we report the presence of Gyrocotyle spp. from rarely-caught deep-sea chimaeras collected in the North-East Atlantic, and describe two new species G. haffii n. sp. from the bent-nose chimaera, Harriota raleighana Goode & Bean, and G. discoveryi n. sp. from the large-eyed rabbit fish, Hydrolagus mirabilis (Collett). Nuclear ribosomal sequence data were generated for individual parasites taken from different host species collected on different dates and from different localities and were combined with previously published sequences. Phylogenetic analyses supported the recognition of independent lineages and clusters, indicative of species, but were indecisive in recovering the root of the tree in analyses that included non-gyrocotylid outgroup taxa. The molecular data reveal variation not reflected in morphology and point to a complex picture of genetic divergence shaped by both isolation and migration in the deep-sea environment.Remote sensing data from Indian geostationary satellites (Kalapana-1, INSAT 3A) were used for the first time for early warning of agricultural drought and forewarning of crop vigour. An Early warning indicator (EWI) was developed from operational product of rainfall and reference evapotranspiration from observations of Kalpana-1 very high resolution radiometer (VHRR). The effectiveness of EWI was evaluated for the two drought years (2009 and 2012). The positive correlation (r = 0.66-0.68 for 2009 and r = 0.64-0.70 for 2012) between the EWI in the month of June-July and standardized precipitation index-1 (SPI-1) averaged over administrative unit (called district) indicates that EWI can be used successfully for drought early warning. Lag-response behaviour between EWI and crop vigour in terms of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and LAI (leaf area index) over cropland was studied. Systematic patterns emerged for 30 days lag period between negative EWI and NDVI at both grid-scale (0.25°) and at district level. Linear relations were found between 10-day EWI and NDVI or LAI at 30 days lag during June-July period. Linear models were developed to forewarn crop vigour which was validated with realized NDVI from INSAT 3A charge-coupled device (CCD) observations within 95% accuracy. The EWI is recommended as potential indicator for early-season agricultural drought assessment and can be used for sub-district scale with finer scale rainfall and evaporation products from advanced next-generation geostationary meteorological satellites.PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of prenatal diagnosis using a spatio-temporal image correlation-based telediagnosis system at a tertiary referral unit in a Japanese prefecture over a 9-year period, and to investigate the validity of delivery hospital selection. METHODS This study retrospectively analyzed telediagnosis cases from 2009 to 2018 in six geographically remote hospitals. We built a telediagnosis system called the Kyoto Fetal Ultrasonographic Telediagnosis System (K-FUTS). Three-dimensional ultrasonographic images from these referral hospitals were forwarded to the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine (KPUM) Hospital through an optical fiber network system for analysis. The primary endpoint was accuracy of prenatal diagnosis. Cases with severe congenital heart disease (CHD) that required immediate postnatal treatment were identified using the K-FUTS. These cases were then examined to determine whether they were delivered at appropriate hospitals. RESULTS During the study period, datasets from 182 cases were transferred to KPUM Hospital. Twenty-one datasets were excluded because of data unavailability or poor image quality. CHD was detected in 14.9% of cases (24/161); the accuracy of prenatal diagnosis was 95.0% (153/161). The K-FUTS identified seven severe cases with CHD requiring immediate postnatal surgical or medical treatment. These cases were delivered at KPUM Hospital with a pediatrician present. The remaining 17 cases considered suitable for delivery at the referral hospitals were delivered there, and they did not require intervention immediately after birth. CONCLUSION Our telediagnosis system contributed to the prenatal diagnosis of CHD and management of pregnancies in patients who were geographically remote from a tertiary hospital. The purpose of this study was to investigate how concussion history affects cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) in Special Operations Forces (SOF) combat soldiers. We studied 104 SOF soldiers [age = 33.5 ± 4.3 years; height = 179.7 ± 6.3 cm; 59 (56.7%) with self-reported concussion history]. We employed transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound to measure middle cerebral artery (MCA) velocity. Baseline TCD data were collected for 2 min. Changes in MCA velocity were measured in response to five breath-holding trials and five hyperventilation trials. Cerebrovascular reactivity was quantified by the breath-holding index (BHI), vasomotor reactivity reserve (VMRr), and percent change in overall response curves. Independent t tests were employed to assess group differences in BHI, and VMRr values. We employed mixed effects models with quadratic mean structures to assess group differences in percent change MCA velocity response curves. There were no significant group differences in BHI (t102 = 0.04, p = 0.97) or VMRr (t102 = -0.33, p = 0.75). click here There were no group differences in relative MCA velocity response curves during the breath-holding task (F1,5092 = 0.19, p = 0.66) or during the hyperventilation task (F1,5092 = 0.41, p = 0.52) between SOF soldiers with and without a self-reported concussion history. If CVR deficits exist immediately post-concussion, our study suggests that these deficits recover over time in this population. While long-term neurophysiological effects of blast-related injury are currently unknown, assessing CVR response may provide further insight into cerebrovascular function and overall physiological health following blast exposure. The Sertoli cell (SC) specific connexin43 (Cx43) knockout (SCCx43KO) mouse line is ideal to gain insight into the mechanistic gap junction formation in SC and the seminiferous epithelium. A method for developing primary SC cultures from these mice was established, validated and successfully characterized via polymerase chain reaction, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence (IF), and Western blots (WB). It was evident that both knockout (KO) and wild-type (WT) primary cell cultures were similar in morphology. These highly pure SC cultures were subjected to cell proliferation assays indicating no notable proliferation in cultures of both genotypes. Measurements of cell monolayer integrity indicated significant increases in transepithelial electrical resistance and consequently in tight junction expression of the KO cultures. Using semi-quantitative WB and IF, tight junction protein claudin-11 was analyzed. These results support a role for Cx43 in regulating blood-testis barrier (BTB) function, composition, and dynamics in vitro. Thus, the SC deficient Cx43 cell cultures may provide a valuable in vitro tool for a better understanding of the mechanistic role of Cx43 in spermatogenesis and BTB assembly.A fluorescence off-on sensing platform was developed based on thioglycolic acid-stabilized cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs) as fluorescence probe for the sensitive and selective detection of 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (DPA) in spores. The fluorescence emission intensity of the quantum dots at 650 nm when excited at 460 nm was first quenched by mixing with europium ions (Eu3+) and then recovered after the addition of DPA. The interaction of DPA with Eu3+ relieved the quenching effect of Eu3+ toward CdS QDs. As the DPA concentration increases, the color of the probe changes from colorless to red. The method exhibits a wide linear range from 1 to 120 μM for DPA determination, with a detection limit of 0.2 μM. The CdS QDs based nanoprobe was successfully applied for sensitive determination of DPA released from bacteria spores. In this case, the detection limit is 3.5 × 104 CFU·mL-1. Graphical abstract An off-on fluorescence sensor for detecting anthrax markers -2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid though restoring the fluorescence of cadmium sulfide quantum dots quenching by europium ions.
