Salinization of soil is a global environmental concern. To bioremediate or use saline-alkali lands, most studies focused on screening of halophytes and breeding of saline-tolerant non-halophyte vegetables. Seldom studies investigated effects of salinity on general landscape plants, which are important for landscape construction in urban areas. In the present study, effects of salinity on seed germination and seedling growth of the perennial ryegrass Lolium perenne were investigated. The final seed germination rate was not affected at salinity up to 6.4‰. Partial seedlings wilted in all saline treatments and the mortality of L. perenne was positively correlated with salinity. Treatments with salinity equal to or lower than 1.6‰ did not affect length and dry weight of shoot and root. These results suggested that L. perenne could be sowed and then grow well in low-salinity areas. To explore the underlying physiological mechanisms, contents of photosynthetic pigments and antioxidant indices were determined. The results showed that contents of chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid significantly decreased in all saline treatments, in comparison to the control. Similarly, activities of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase decreased and contents of glutathione and malondialdehyde increased in saline treatments. Additionally, transcriptome analysis identified 792 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in L. perenne shoots between 6.4‰ saline treatment and the control. Compared with the control, genes in relation to iron transportation and amino acid metabolism were downregulated, but genes participating in energy metabolism were upregulated. These changes would inhibit toxicity of ion accumulation and provide more energy for plants to resist saline stress.A parenteral medical combination containing vaborbactam and meropenem is used mainly to treat complicated urinary tract infections. A novel ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometric method was developed for the sensitive determination of both compounds in human plasma. Sample preparation was performed by precipitation technique. The chromatographic separation was accomplished using the Acquity C18-BEH column, 0.01 M ammonium formate acetonitrile (47 53, v/v) as a mobile phase with a flow rate of 0.2 ml min-1. Analytes were monitored by applying multiple reaction monitoring. The bioanalytical validation criteria were conducted following the Food and Drug Administration recommendations. The method was linear within range 0.5 to 50 µg ml-1, for both drugs. The intra-day and inter-day precision, as coefficient variation (% CV) and the accuracy, as % bias did not exceed 15% for both drugs. The percentage recovery of targeted analytes was not less than 77%, calculated at three quality control levels. The proposed method showed a suitable lower level of quantification value of 0.50 µg ml-1 for both analytes, which is far lower than the expected Cmax, which permits the use of this method for pharmacokinetic studies. The proposed method proved to be useful for the evaluation of this combination in both human plasma and pharmaceutical formulation.Reduction of the anterior dentition (i.e. incisors and canines) is a major adaptative trait of the Rhinocerotidae among Perissodactyla. However, the corresponding evolutionary sequence was lacking a robust phylogenetic frame to support it thus far. Here, we describe a new Oligocene species of Rhinocerotinae, Mesaceratherium sp. nov. from the Swiss locality of Bumbach (MP25 reference level). In addition, we identify the only known complete mandible of Epiaceratherium magnum, an early-branching rhinocerotid, as well as one of the earliest European rhinoceroses. We also compute a parsimony analysis based on morpho-anatomical characters to assess their phylogenetic position and elucidate the early evolution of the Rhinocerotidae. Our results allow to propose a new scenario for the reduction of the anterior dentition in which upper and lower dentitions would have undergone distinct evolutionary trajectories.Life-history traits are among the most important factors affecting population abundance and genetic diversity of species. Here, we analysed the genetic patterns of two Galaxias species with different life-history traits to investigate how these biological differences impacted their evolution in the Valdivia River basin, Southern Chile. We analysed mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences from 225 individuals of Galaxias maculatus and 136 of G. platei to compare patterns of genetic diversity, structure and demographic growth across the basin. Galaxias maculatus presented higher genetic diversity and higher genetic structure than G. platei. Demographic analyses showed G. maculatus kept a higher population size over time, with a signal of demographic expansion in the last 250 kyr. Whereas Galaxias platei, exhibited lower, but constant population size over time. Furthermore, haplotype networks revealed higher lineage diversity in G. maculatus with a tendency to occupy different areas of the basin. Coalescent simulations ruled out that genetic differences between species could be explained by stochastic processes (genetic drift), suggesting species-specific biological differences as responsible for the observed genetic differences. We discuss how differences in life-history traits and past glaciations interact to shape the evolutionary history of the two Galaxias species.Little information is currently available on interpersonal gait synchronization in overground walking. Ciforadenant This is caused by difficulties in continuous gait monitoring over many steps while ensuring repeatability of experimental conditions. These challenges could be overcome by using immersive virtual reality (VR), assuming it offers ecological validity. To this end, this study provides some of the first evidence of gait coordination patterns for overground walking dyads in VR. Six subjects covered the total distance of 27 km while walking with a pacer. The pacer was either a real human subject or their anatomically and biomechanically representative VR avatar driven by an artificial intelligence algorithm. Side-by-side and front-to-back arrangements were tested without and with the instruction to synchronize steps. Little evidence of spontaneous gait coordination was found in both visual conditions, but persistent gait coordination patterns were found in the case of intentional synchronization. Front-to-back rather than side-by-side arrangement consistently yielded in the latter case higher mean synchronization strength index.
