These results indicate that IL-1β is a key cytokine that adversely affects the TJs between MECs by activating p38.Ferroptosis is a mode of cell death dependent on iron ions, which is mainly induced by the decrease of the biological activity of glutathione peroxidase or the accumulation of lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species (ROS). It is significantly different from autophagy and other forms of cell death in terms of cell morphology and biochemistry. The exact mechanisms of ferroptosis are not clear. More and more studies have shown that various tumor diseases and nervous system diseases are closely related to ferroptosis. The occurrence and development of related diseases can be tolerated by stimulating or inhibiting the occurrence of ferroptosis. Therefore, ferroptosis has occupied a very important position in recent years. This article reviews the discovery process, characteristics, mechanisms, inducers, inhibitors of ferroptosis and its related clinical applications to lay a foundation for follow-up researchers to study ferroptosis and provide some reference value.Industrial produced perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are environmentally persistent and found in humans around the globe. PFAS is transferred from mother to child during pregnancy and lactation and PFAS concentrations are high in infants. PFAS exposure in early life has been linked to a range of negative health effects. In the present study we have investigated PFAS concentrations in mothers (pregnancy week 18, 28 and 36 and six weeks, four and six months postpartum, n = 114) and in infants at six months age (n = 94), and studied the effects of PFAS status on infant gross motor development by Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS) at age six months. PFAS concentrations declined in the mothers during pregnancy and postpartum period, and the highest concentrations were seen in infants aged six months. Parity was a strong negative predictor and fish intake a strong positive predictor of maternal PFAS status, while maternal concentrations of PFAS in pregnancy week 18 and months of exclusive breastfeeding determined the PFAS concentrations in infants at six months. Infants who scored below the median on gross motor development had higher PFAS concentrations than infants with a better gross motor development. Ninety percent of the women reported having fish for dinner at least once a week, with fatty fish as the most popular choice (72%). A higher maternal fish intake in pregnancy week 18 was associated with a poorer gross motor development in the infants at six months. Infant gross motor development is a marker of later cognitive outcome and our findings indicate that higher PFAS concentrations in young infants and maternal fatty fish intake may impair neurodevelopment. The objective of this study was to examine and compare environmental microbiota from dust and children's respiratory health outcomes at ages seven and twelve. At age seven, in-home visits were conducted for children enrolled in the Cincinnati Childhood Allergy and Air Pollution Study (CCAAPS). Floor dust was collected and analyzed for bacterial (16 S rRNA gene) and fungal (internal transcribed spacer region) microbiota. Respiratory outcomes, including physician-diagnosed asthma, wheeze, rhinitis, and aeroallergen sensitivity were assessed by physical examination and caregiver-report at ages seven and twelve. The associations between dust microbiota and respiratory outcomes were evaluated using Permanova, DESeq, and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression models. Four types of WQS regression models were run to identify mixtures of fungi or bacteria that were associated with the absence or presence of health outcomes. For alpha or beta diversity of fungi and bacteria, no significant associations were found with potential health effects.Seawater desalination is one of the most applied approaches for freshwater replenishment. However, the process not only generates freshwater but also consumes it. It is important to evaluate the balance of the production and consumption of freshwater in desalination, which is also called as water footprint. It will reveal the feasibility of seawater desalination in terms of water production, but related study has not been reported. In this study, the water footprint of reverse osmosis desalination process has been investigated based on a real reverse osmosis desalination plant data. According to the calculation, the freshwater utilization of the reverse osmosis desalination plant was about 8.16 × 10-3 m3 with 1 m3 freshwater production. The study reveals that RO desalination is freshwater gain process as the utilized freshwater amount was less than the one produced. The sensitivity study showed that the energy source used in the process was the most significant parameter affecting on the water footprint. The freshwater required in the reverse osmosis desalination with energy supplied by thermal and solar was 8.01 × 10-3 m3 and 9.90 × 10-3 m3 in 1 m3 freshwater generation, respectively. It suggests that energy source selection is important in RO desalination system.Bisphenol analogues (BPs) are heavily used and negatively affect the health of human beings, however, there is little knowledge regarding human exposure to BPs other than BPA. This study aims to assess human exposure to BPs through investigating pooled urine and wastewater samples. Twenty-four pooled urine samples were prepared from 960 specimens (classified by age and gender). Wastewater samples were collected from six major wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Guangzhou, South of China. BPA, BPS, and BPAF were widely detected in urine samples, with a median concentration of 0.96, 0.42, and 0.15 μg/L, respectively. Median urinary levels of BPA and BPS were higher in males than females (p > 0.05). In addition, BPA and BPS urinary levels in young adults (15-30 years old) were greater than those in children (0-15 years old) (p > 0.05). Nevertheless, most of the BPs were detected in wastewater samples, of which BPA and BPS were predominant BPs, with a median concentration of 1.0 and 0.29 μg/L. The average per capital mass loads of ΣBPs on the weekdays of mix typed WWTP was much higher than those of the weekends. Nonetheless, the average loads of ΣBPs on the weekdays of domestic WWTP was slightly lower than those of the weekends. This indicated that important sources of BPs might include industrial wastewater and household cleaning products. Urinary BPA, BPS, and BPAF accounted for less than 5% per capital mass loads in wastewater, suggesting that much of the BPA, BPS, and BPAF in municipal wastewater originate non-human excretion. Hence, the wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) approach based on parent compounds is not available for assessing human exposure to BPs, neither for other industrial chemicals with diverse sources in municipal wastewater. These results contributes to the development of an efficient surveillance system which can provide insight in the trends of human exposure of BPs.Implementing a lockdown or activity restriction to reduce the spread of COVID-19 cases is assumed to improve air quality in highly populated cities. The effect of lockdown on air quality is often quantified by comparing pre- and during-lockdown air quality parameters without considering confounding meteorological factors. We demonstrated that rainfall can explain changes in PM10 and PM2.5 parameters in the city of Jakarta during lockdown. This article shows that comparing air quality pre- and during lockdown is misleading. Variables affecting air quality such as meteorological variables should be taken into account. The air quality in Jakarta as measured by PM10 and PM2.5 did not change significantly during the lockdown period after removing the seasonal effect.Humic acid (HA) is the main component of natural organic matter that generates carcinogenic by‒products during disinfection and its removal from water resources is challenging. Biocompatible halloysite (HNTs) nanomaterial decorated with polyaniline (HNTs‒PANI) was synthesized via polymerization technique. HNTs‒PANI was added to prepare polyethersulfone mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). The influence of HNTs‒PANI concentration on HA removal efficiency was studied by varying the HNTs‒PANI (0.5, 1 and 1.5 wt%). The characterization studies of MMMs revealed that the addition of HNTs‒PANI improved the morphology of the membranes, surface properties, chemical stability and thermal property. The amine and hydroxyl groups within the MMMs improved the membrane wettability. The addition of HNTs‒PANI within the MMMs had significantly enhanced the pure water flux and HA filtration. YHP2 MMM with 1 wt% of HNTs‒PANI demonstrated sieving coefficient of 0.10 and the highest HA removal efficiency of 91% greater than the neat PES membrane. Furthermore, the antifouling property of the MMMs was studied using HA as foulant. 1 wt% of HNTs‒PANI added MMM showed a high flux recovery ratio (94.9%) with low total fouling of 12% and low irreversible fouling of 5%, respectively. Thus, HNTs‒PANI was an efficient nanomaterial for enhancing the pure water flux, removal efficiency and antifouling property to treat water contaminated with HA.Previous studies have indicated maternal exposure to particles with aerodynamic diameter less then 2.5 μm (PM2.5) is associated with preterm birth (PTB). However, no study has investigated this effect in pre-pregnancy impaired fasting glucose (IFG) women. This study aimed to differentiate the effects of maternal PM2.5 exposure on PTB between pre-pregnancy IFG and normoglycemia women, and to further identify the susceptible window. This cohort study was conducted between January 2014 and December 2017 in 21 Chinese cities. All the recruited women received pre-pregnancy fasting serum glucose (FSG) tests and were followed up for their delivery outcomes. The PM2.5 exposures were estimated by the daily air pollution concentrations of the nearby monitors. Women with FSG below 7.0 mmol/L were included in the analysis. We employed the Cox proportional hazards models to examine whether PM2.5 exposure was associated with PTB. 237957 women were included and 7055 (3.0%) of them were pre-pregnancy IFG. During the entire women.Widespread usage of nano-TiO2 in various commercial products and their consequent release into the seawater pose a severe threat to marine biota. Nanoplastics, a secondary pollutant in the marine environment, could influence adverse effects of nano-TiO2. www.selleckchem.com/JAK.html The main goal of the present study was to investigate the influence of the differently functionalized polystyrene nanoplastics (COOH-PSNPs, NH2-PSNPs, and Plain-PSNPs) on the acute toxic effects of P25 nano-TiO2 in marine algae Chlorella sp. Three different concentrations of nano-TiO2, 0.25, 0.5, and 1 mg/L, mixed with 5 mg/L of the PSNPs were employed in this study. A substantial increase was noted in mean hydrodynamic sizes of nano-TiO2 when they were mixed with the PSNPs. This hetero-aggregation would reduce the bioavailability of the particles to the algae. The presence of the PSNPs in the mixture reduced the toxicity of nano-TiO2 significantly. A signficant decline in the oxidative stress parameters like total ROS, superoxide (), and hydroxyl radical generation was noted for the mixture of nano-TiO2 with the PSNPs in comparison with the pristine counterparts.
