Erectile dysfunction (ED) is seen very often in the men with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Due to the ability of vitamin D to reduce endothelial damage and oxidative stress, its role in preventing cardiovascular risk has been demonstrated in some studies. Since ED and cardiovascular disease have common pathogenic mechanisms, many studies have evaluated a possible relationship between vitamin D deficiency and ED. Total 120 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were evaluated in this study. Vitamin D and HbA1c values were statistically compared according to International Index of Erectile Dysfunction (IIEF-5) scores. 23.3% of 120 patients had mild, 38.3% had mild to moderate, 21.7% had moderate and 16.7% had severe ED. There was statistically difference in vitamin D levels of the patients according to IIEF-5 scores. Also, significant difference was found in HbA1c levels between the patients with severe ED and other groups. Cut-off point for vitamin D and HbA1c were determined according to IIEF-5 score in patients who were divided in to two groups (14.41 and 11.1). A statistically significant correlation was found between both cut-off points and IIEF-5 scores. Our study shows that patients with ED have a vitamin D deficiency and a poor glycemic control.Metabolic changes that correlate to cognitive changes are well-known in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Metabolism is often linked to functional changes in proteins by post-translational modifications. The importance of the regulation of transcription by acetylation is well documented. Advanced mass spectrometry reveals hundreds of acetylated proteins in multiple tissues, but the acetylome of human brain, its functional significance, and the changes with disease are unknown. Filling this gap is critical for understanding the pathophysiology and development of therapies. To fill this gap, we assessed the human brain acetylome in human brain and its changes with AD. More than 5% of the 4,442 proteins from the human brain global proteome were acetylated. Acetylated proteins were primarily found in the cytosol (148), mitochondria (100), nucleus (91), and plasma membrane (58). The comparison of the brain acetylome in controls to that of patients with AD revealed striking and selective differences in terms of its abundances of acetylated peptides/sites. Acetylation of 18 mitochondrial proteins decreased, while acetylation of two cytosolic proteins, tau and GFAP, increased. Our experiments demonstrate that acetylation at some specific lysine sites alters enzyme function. The results indicate that general activation of de-acetylases (i.e., sirtuins) is not an appropriate therapeutic approach for AD.

Grain chalkiness lowers the market value of rice. Alleviating grain chalkiness is the most challenging issue in many rice-producing areas of the world. Nitrogen (N) metabolism has received increasing attention as a result of its relationship with grain chalkiness, although little information is available on the mechanism of N-induced grain chalk.

A highly chalky rice variety OM052 was used to explore the protein synthesis and its accumulation in the grain exposed to N topdressing (N+) at the panicle initiation stage and a control (N-). The results showed that chalky kernels were stimulated by the N+ treatment and more prone to occur on the top and primary rachis. The grain protein content was increased because of the increased average and maximum rates of protein accumulation during grain filling, which was related to the enhanced activities of glutamine synthetase, glutamate synthase, glutamic oxalo-acetic transaminase and glutamate pyruvate transaminase under the N+ treatment. The activities of these enzymes at 15 days after flowering (DAF) were notably positively correlated with grain chalky traits and protein content.

Although the topics for this year's Annual Research Review were decided long before most of had heard of the coronavirus, many readers may find themselves reading the papers in this issue through a pandemic lens. For some authors, the COVID-19 pandemic and the social unrest that characterized parts of the world where these authors live are likely to have shaped the way they ultimately framed the topics of their reviews. This issue serves as a reminder that it is critical to read science in social and historical context. Our preoccupations as psychologists and psychiatrists reflect our cultural values and societal experiences at a particular time and place.

Autism presents with similar prevalence and core impairments in diverse populations. We conducted a scoping review of reviews to determine key barriers and innovative strategies which can contribute to attaining universal health coverage (UHC), from early detection to effective interventions for autism in low- and middle-income countries (LAMIC).

A systematic literature search of review articles was conducted. Reviews relevant to the study research question were included if they incorporated papers from LAMIC and focused on children (<eight years old) with autism or their caregivers. Gefitinib The database search was supplemented with bibliographic search of included articles and key informant suggestions. Data were extracted and mapped onto a Theory of Change model toward achieving UHC for autism in LAMIC.

We identified 31 articles which reviewed data from over fifty countries across Africa, Latin America, Middle East, and Asia and addressed barriers across one or more of four inter-related domains (a) the so stepped care architecture, and community awareness of child development milestones.

We present a Theory of Change model which describe the strategies and resources needed to realize UHC for children with autism in LAMIC. We highlight the importance of harnessing existing evidence to best effect, using task sharing and adapted intervention strategies, community participation, and technology innovation. Scaling up these innovations will require open access to appropriate detection and intervention tools, systematic approaches to building and sustaining skills in frontline providers to support detection and deliver interventions embedded within a stepped care architecture, and community awareness of child development milestones.
