The coronavirus pandemic has taken a detrimental toll on the lives of individuals globally. In addition to the direct effect (e.g., being infected with the virus), this pandemic has negatively ravaged many industries, particularly food retail, food services, and hospitality. Given the novelty of the disease, the true impact of COVID-19 remains to be determined. Because of the nature of their work, and the characteristics of the workers, individuals in the food retail, food service, and hospitality industries are a group whose vulnerability is at its most fragile state during this pandemic. Through this qualitative study, we explored workers' perspectives on the impact of COVID-19 on their mental health and coping, including screening for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder symptoms. Twenty-seven individual interviews were conducted, audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Four key themes emerged being infected and infecting others, the unknown, isolation, and work and customer demands. Considering the many uncertainties of COVID-19, workers in these three industries were experiencing heightened levels of mental distress because of where they worked and the already existing disparities they faced on a daily basis before the pandemic started. Yet they remained hopeful for a better future. More studies are needed to fully understand the magnitude, short-term, and long-term effects of COVID-19. Based on this study's findings, programs are critically needed to promote positive coping behaviors among at-risk and distressed workers. Recommendations for employers, occupational health and safety professionals, and policy stakeholders to further support these service workers are discussed.Chronic cough is very common in respiratory clinics, and no effective drugs are available. Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill. (S. see more chinensis), an important traditional Chinese medicine, has been extensively prescribed for patients with a persistent cough. Preliminary research indicated that 95% ethanol extracts (EE) of S. chinensis showed remarkable antitussive activity in guinea pigs exposed to cigarette smoke (CS). To find out the antitussive ingredients of S. chinensis, EE was divided into four fractions according to the polarity petroleum ether extract (PEE), ethyl acetate extract (ECE), n-butyl alcohol extract, and residue extract. The antitussive, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects of the four fractions were evaluated in a guinea pig model of cough hypersensitivity induced by CS exposure. Eighteen main constituents of the two effective fractions, PEE and ECE, were identified using ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography electronic spray ion time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The cough inhibition activities of compound 1, 3, 9, 10, 17 were evaluated on citric acid induced acute cough guinea pigs. The results showed that the antitussive activity of EE was almost all contained in PEE and ECE. The 16 major peaks in PEE were identified as 15 lignans (1-12 and 14-16) and 1 triterpene (compound 13), and 3 major peaks (1, 17, and 18) in ECE were also identified as lignans. Three doses of five compounds brought about a significant decrease in number of cough efforts (P  less then  .01), and the cough inhibition rates were between 40.9% and 85.1%. Therefore, lignans are the antitussive ingredients of S. chinensis.The anticancer effects of Shinan (Shinan-South Korea) sea salts on azoxymethane (AOM)/dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) with high fat diet (HFD)-induced colon cancer and obesity in C57BL/6N mice were studied. We prepared three types of sea salt generally manufactured sea salt (GS), generally manufactured after filtering seawater (FS), and manufactured with only new seawater (NS). Sea salt intake increased colon length and reduced colon length/weight ratio, tumor number, and progression of colon cancer in colon tissue. The differently prepared sea salts also ameliorated liver injury. In addition, the mineral composition of each salt was different. Moreover, the sea salts enhanced activation of natural killer cell (CD56) expression in colon and spleen tissues. However, the mineral compositions of sea salts were not simply associated with anticancer effects in AOM/DSS+HFD induced mice. Thus, the anticolorectal cancer effects of sea salts may be mediated by different factors, which remain to be identified.The chemistry occurring in the interstellar medium (ISM) is an active area of contemporary research. New aspects of interstellar chemistry are getting unraveled regularly. In this context, the role of metal-ions in the chemistry occurring in the ISM is not well-studied so far. Herein, we highlight the role of metal-ions in interstellar chemistry. For this purpose, we choose the problem of gas-phase formamide formation in interstellar molecular clouds. Formamide is a key biomonomer and contains the simplest peptide [-(C═O)-NH-] linkage. With its two electronegative atoms ("O" and "N"), it provides an excellent platform to probe the role of the metal-ions. The metal-ions chosen are Na+, K+, Al+, Mg+, and Mg2+-all of them present in the ISM. The metal-ions are studied in three different forms as bare positively charged ions, as hydrated metal-ions co-ordinated with a molecule of water, and when the metal-ions are part of a neutral covalent molecule. With the aid of electronic structure calculations [CCSD(T) and DFT methods], we study different gas-phase pathways which result in the generation of interstellar formamide. Throughout our study, we find that metal-ions lower the barriers (with Mg+, Mg++, and Al+ offering maximal stabilization of the transition states) and facilitate the reactions. The chemical factors influencing the reactions, how we consider the putative conditions in the ISM, the astrochemical implications of this study, and its connection with terrestrial prebiotic chemistry and refractory astrochemistry are subsequently presented. Based on our results, we also recommend the detection of two new closed-shell molecules, NH2CH2OH (aminomethanol) and CH2NH2+ (iminium ion), and two open-shell molecules, CONH2 (carbamyl radical) and HCONH (an isomer of carbamyl radical), in the ISM.
