Muscle-derived secretory proteins, referred to as myokines, mediate interactions between skeletal muscle mass and other organs such as the liver, adipose tissue, pancreas, bone, and the cardiovascular system. As individuals age, reduced levels of physical activity and sarcopenia (loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength) are associated with physical frailty and disability. Recently, several studies have suggested that the loss of skeletal muscle mass may contribute to metabolic disease. Therefore, herein, we focus on the relationships between skeletal muscle mass and metabolic diseases, including metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Pulmonary parenchymal opacities are often observed during chest radiography. Currently, few cases have reported the complications of severe COVID-19 pneumonia. We report a case where serial follow-up chest computed tomography revealed progression of pulmonary lesions into confluent bilateral consolidation with lower lung predominance, thereby confirming COVID-19 pneumonia. Furthermore, complications such as mediastinal emphysema, giant bulla, and pneumothorax were also observed during the course of the disease. This excess pressure compresses alveolar gas (i.e., thoracic gas compression [TGC]), resulting in underestimated forced expiratory flows (FEFs) at a given lung volume. It is unknown if TGC is influenced by sex; however, because men have larger lungs and stronger respiratory muscles, we hypothesized that men would have greater TGC. CC-885 We examined TGC across the "effort-dependent" region of VC in healthy young men (n = 11) and women (n = 12). Subjects performed VC maneuvers at varying efforts while airflow, volume, and esophageal pressure (POES ) were measured. Quasistatic expiratory deflation curves were used to obtain lung recoil (PLUNG ) and alveolar pressures (i.e., PALV  = POES -PLUNG ). The raw maximal expiratory flow-volume (MEFVraw ) curve was obtained from the "maximum effort" VC maneuver. The TGC-corrected curve was obtained by constructing a "maximal perimeter" curve from all VC efforts (MEFVcorr ). TGC was examined via differences between curves in FEFs (∆FEF), area under the expiratory curves (∆AEX ), and estimated compressed gas volume (∆VGC) across the VC range. Men displayed greater total ∆AEX (5.4 ± 2.0 vs. 2.0 ± 1.5 L2 ·s-1 ; p  less then  .001). ∆FEF was greater in men at 25% of exhaled volume only (p  less then  .05), whereas ∆VGC was systematically greater in men across the entire VC (main effect; p  less then  .05). PALV was also greater in men throughout forced expiration (p  less then  .01). Taken together, these findings demonstrate that men display more TGC, occurring early in forced expiration, likely due to greater expiratory pressures throughout the forced VC maneuver. © 2020 The Authors. We want to investigate the value of variations of lymphocytes and T lymphocyte subsets in predicting RP after radiotherapy (RT) of lung cancer based on previous clinical findings. A total of 182 lung cancer patients who received RT were retrospectively analyzed. Circulating lymphocytes and T lymphocyte subsets were measured before, during, and after RT. Patients were evaluated from the start of RT to 6 months post-RT. A mice model with acute radiation-induced lung injury was established and circulating lymphocytes were measured weekly until 8 weeks after irradiation. Univariate and multivariate analyses were adopted to identify risk factors of RP. Lymphocyte levels significantly decreased (P  less then  .001) in patients before RP symptoms developed that also was able to be seen in the mice model and the values recovered during remission of symptoms. The decrease in lymphocyte count reflected the severity of RP. Meanwhile, CD4+  T lymphocyte count was significantly lower during the occurrence of symptoms in patients with RP than in those without RP (P  less then  .001), and it improved along with RP recovery. Levels of lymphocytes and CD4+  T lymphocyte subsets proved as independent predictors of RP. Here we showed that lower peripheral blood levels of lymphocytes and CD4+  T lymphocyte were associated with an increased risk of RP, which was validated by this mice model, and thus are associated with differences in radiation-induced lung toxicity among individuals and help identify those who are susceptible to developing RP after RT. © 2020 The Authors. However, knowledge of gut bacteria in birds lags behind that of other animals. In this study, we investigated the gut bacterial communities of lesser white-fronted geese (Anser erythropus) wintering at Shengjin Lake and Caizi Lake, China, using high-throughput sequencing (Illumina MiSeq). Altogether, 1,053,624 high-quality sequences and 4,405 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were acquired from 30 fecal samples (15 per lake). The OTUs represented eight phyla and 17 classes from the Caizi Lake samples and seven phyla and 16 classes from the Shengjin Lake samples. Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were the dominant phyla. The spatial distance and the Chao1, Simpson, and Shannon indices showed that the alpha diversity differed significantly between the samples from both lakes. The phylogenetic tree and heatmap analyses showed that all the Caizi Lake samples were clustered together and all the Shengjin Lake samples were clustered together.
