Internet and print media are frequently used by laypersons to learn about health issues. The objective of this study was to find out whether people with mental disorders showed a special pattern of usage. Where and why do they seek for information about their disorder? How do they experience their search? In semi-standardized interviews, we surveyed 200 psychiatric inpatients. Only patients of the following diagnostic groups were included 1. Schizophrenia, schizotypal and delusional disorders (F20-F29), 2. Affective disorders (F30-F39) and 3. Disorders of adult personality and behavior (F60-F69). We focused on the sources the patients had used and the experiences they had in the course of their internet search. The vast majority had already searched for information about psychiatry, psychology or medication via internet or in print media. Only 10 participants discontinued or rejected therapeutic measures due to information they had gained. Patients with personality disorders were significantly more likely than other patients to attribute their symptoms to a wrong diagnosis after seeking for information. DNA repetitive elements account for >50% of the human genome; however, little is known of their contribution to Parkinson's disease aetiology. While select short tandem repeats (STRs) within candidate genes have been studied in Parkinson's disease, their genome-wide contribution remains unknown. Here we present the first genome-wide association study of STRs in Parkinson's disease. In this study, we investigated the experimental conditions needed to induce normal metamorphosis in artificially spawned Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica), including initial larval size, TH concentration, and timing of TH immersion. Around 37 mm TL was found to be the minimum size of larvae that underwent successful metamorphosis induced by l-thyroxine (T4); notably, smaller larvae did not show increased expression of TH receptors in response to T4, suggesting that small leptocephali are not sufficiently responsive to TH. Furthermore, successful completion of metamorphosis depended on sensitivity to TH, which changed with metamorphic stage; for example, prolonged exposure to higher TH concentrations led to morphological defects. Collectively, these results reveal that the induction of metamorphosis by TH is dependent on larval size, and that the concentration of TH must be adjusted in line with metamorphic stage to achieve successful progression of metamorphosis. Our findings will contribute to improving production technology in the aquaculture of Japanese eels by facilitating the earlier induction of metamorphosis in artificial leptocephali.This study evaluated whether different parameters describing cardiovascular function, energy metabolism, oxygen transport and oxidative stress were related to the critical thermal maximum (CTMAX) of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and if there were differential changes in these parameters during and after heat shock in animals with different CTMAX in order to characterize which physiological features make seabass vulnerable to heat waves. Seabass (n = 621) were tested for CTMAX and the physiological parameters were measured in individuals with good or poor temperature tolerance before and after a heat shock (change in temperature from 15 °C to 28 °C in 1.5 h). Fish with good thermal tolerance had larger ventricles with higher maximal heart rate during the heat shock than individuals with poor tolerance. Furthermore, they initially had a high ventricular Ca2+-ATPase activity, which was reduced to a similar level as in fish with poor tolerance following heat shock. The activity of heart lactate dehydrogenase increased in fish with high tolerance, when they were exposed to heat shock, while the aerobic enzyme activity did not differ between groups. The tolerant individuals had smaller red muscle fibers with higher myoglobin content than the poorly tolerant ones. The poorly tolerant individuals had higher hematocrit, which increased with heat shock in both groups. The poorly tolerant individuals had also higher activity of enzymes related to oxidative stress especially after heat shock. In general, CTMAX was not depending on merely one physiological factor but several organ and cellular parameters were related to the CTMAX of seabass and when working in combination they might protect the highly tolerant seabass from future heat waves.

Diagnostic imaging is often difficult to interpret and the medical community is divided on distinguishing among complete response, partial response, stable disease, and progressive disease. A minimally invasive liquid biopsy would supplement imaging and clinical findings and has the capacity to be helpful in several ways 1) diagnosis, 2) selection of patients for specific treatments, 3) tracking of treatment response, and 4) prognostic value. Metanalysis reported a risk ratio of 14.1, p=0.25, suggesting bisphosphonates are a risk factor in the development of periprosthetic/peri-implant atypical fractures.
