The present study aimed to investigate oral cancer awareness and its related knowledge among residents in Beijing.

A questionnaire survey was conducted among Beijing residents concerning their knowledge of oral cancer, and its prevention and treatment.

A total of 3055 questionnaires were completed, 45.8% by males and 54.2% by females. The ages of the respondents ranged from 15 to 93years; 12.4% were smokers, 1.1% chewed betel nuts, and 82.5% brushed their teeth at least twice a day. Lung cancer was heard of by the most respondents, followed by gastric cancer and liver cancer; oral cancer was the least heard of. More than 60% of respondents were unaware of the risk factors and early signs of oral cancer.

This survey demonstrated a general lack of public awareness and knowledge about oral cancer. Specific measures should be taken to improve public awareness of oral cancer and its prevention and treatment.

To compare clinical and economic outcomes after sternotomy for cardiac surgery with skin closure through 2-octyl cyanoacrylate plus polymer mesh tape (2OPMT) versus conventional absorbable sutures plus waterproof wound dressings (CSWWD).

Retrospective study using the Premier Healthcare Database. Patients undergoing a cardiac surgery requiring sternotomy with 2OPMT or CSWWD were included. Primary outcome was 60-day cumulative incidence of diagnosis for wound complications (infection, dehiscence). Secondary outcomes were index admission hospital length of stay (LOS), total hospital-borne costs, discharge status, and 60-day cumulative incidences of inpatient readmission and reoperation. After propensity score matching, outcomes were compared between the 2OPMT and CSWWD groups using bivariate multilevel mixed-effects generalized linear models.

Overall, 7,901 2OPMT patients and 10,775 CSWWD patients were eligible for study. After propensity score matching on 68 variables, each group comprised 5,338 patients d with CSWWD, while exhibiting a significant association with lower LOS and total hospital-borne costs. The production and processing of animal-based products generates many collagen-rich by-products, which have received attention both for exploitation to increase their added value and to reduce their negative environmental impact. The collagen-rich by-products can be hydrolyzed by collagenases for further utilization. Therefore, collagenases are of benefit for efficient collagen materials processing. An alternative and safe way to produce secreted collagenases is needed.

Two collagenases from Hathewaya histolytica, ColG and ColH, were successfully secreted by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Compared with the native signal peptide of collagenase, the α-factor leader is more efficient in guiding collagenase secretion. Collagenase secretion was significantly increased in YPD medium by supplementing with calcium and zinc ions. Recombinant collagenase titers reached 68 U/mL and 55 U/mL for ColG and ColH, respectively. This study was performed to investigate the association between symptoms and signs in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

Data were obtained from 122 MGD patients who were recruited for intense pulsed light therapy from November 2017 to April 2018 and the severity of their symptoms and signs at baseline were observed and recorded. Spearman correlation analyses were performed to analyze the relationships between SPEED score and signs. Subjects were divided into different subgroups based on possible influencing factors, and the differences in symptoms and signs were compared between different subgroups. Then influencing factors were controlled by regression analysis to explore the relationship between symptoms and signs and the strong factors affecting symptoms and signs.

Analysis of baseline data showed that SPEED scores were not correlated with TBUT, CFSS, MGYSS or any index of eyelid margin abnormality (p > 0.05). To understand the drought response mechanism of L. corniculatus , we investigated physiological responses under drought stress and constructed suppression subtractive hybridisation (SSH) cDNA libraries to isolate drought-inducible genes and quantitatively study the expression levels of candidate drought- responsive genes. Genes encoding calmodulin-like protein, mitogen-activated protein kinase, indole-3-acetic acid-induced protein, ser/thr-protein phosphatase homolog-related proteins, and β -galactosidase-related protein with hydrolysis activity were isolated and considered the main factors that explained the resistance of L. corniculatus to drought. Approximately 632 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) were identified and confirmed in the constructed SSH library. The Gene Ontology (GO) analysis revealed that these genes were involved mainly in transcription processes, protein synthesis, material metabolism, catalytic reactions, sugar metabolism, and photosynthesis. The interaction between the functions of these drought-related genes and the physiological responses preliminarily explains the drought resistance mechanisms of L. corniculatus .The HAK (High-affinity K+) family members mediate K+ transport that confers normal plant growth and resistance against unfavourable environmental conditions. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) HAK transporters have been extensively investigated for phylogenetic analyses with other plants species with very few of them functionally characterised. But very little information is known about their evolutionary aspects, overall structural, functional characterisation, and global expression pattern of the complete HAK family members in response to salt stress. In this study, 27 rice transporters were phylogenetically clustered with different dicot and monocot family members. Subsequently, the exon-intron structural patterns, conserved motif analyses, evolutionary divergence based different substitution matrix, orthologous-paralogous relationships were studied elaborately. Structural characterisations included a comparative study of secondary and tertiary structure, post-translational modifications, correspondence analyses, normal mode analyses, K+/Na+ binding affinities of each of the OsHAK gene members. Global expression profile under salt stress showed clade-specific expression pattern of the proteins. Additionally, five OsHAK genes were chosen for further expression analyses in root and shoot tissues of two rice varieties during short-term salinity in the presence and absence of exogenous spermidine. All the information can be used as first-hand data for dissecting the administrative role of rice HAK transporters under various abiotic stresses.Recent research has pointed to improved salt tolerance by co-overexpression of Arabidopsis thaliana NHX1 (Na+ /H+ antiporter) and SOS1 (Salt Overly Sensitive1). However, functionality under salt stress accompanying heat is less understood in double transgenics. To further advance possible co-operational interactions of AtNHX1 (N) and AtSOS1 (S) under combined stress, modulation of osmolyte, redox, energy, and abscisic acid metabolism genes was analysed. The expression of the target BIP3 , KIN1 , GOLS1 , OHP2 , and CYCA3;2 in transgenic Arabidopsis seedlings were significantly regulated towards a dramatic suppression by ionic, osmotic, and heat stresses. AtNHX1 and AtSOS1 co-overexpression (NS) outpaced the single transgenics and control in terms of membrane disorganisation and the electrolyte leakage of the cell damage caused by heat and salt stress in seedlings. While NaCl slightly induced CYCA3;2 in transgenics, combined stress up-regulated KIN1 and GOLS1 , not other genes. Single N and S transgenics overexpressing AtNHX1 and AtSOS1 only appeared similar in their growth and development; however, different to WT and NS dual transgenics under heat+salt stress. Seed germination, cotyledon survival, and hypocotyl length were less influenced by combined stress in NS double transgenic lines than in single N and S and wild type. Stress combination caused significant reprogramming of gene expression profiles, mainly towards downregulation, possibly as a trade-off strategy. Analysing phenotypic, cellular, and transcriptional responses regulating growth facets of tolerant transgenic genotypes may support the ongoing efforts to achieve combined salt and heat tolerance.This retrospective cross-sectional study sought to determine if there was a change in geographical trends in the orthopedic surgery residency match with the use of virtual interviews. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, visiting rotations at outside institutions were restricted and all residency interviews were conducted virtually for the 2021 match. Given these restrictions, it was hypothesized that applicants would match at a higher rate to their medical school-affiliated residency programs, or geographically nearby their medical school. Data was collected from residency program website and social media accounts to determine if the use of virtual interviews correlated with a decreased rate of matching at outside institutions. During the 2021 match, applicants who applied to orthopedic surgery in 2021 were more likely to match at their medical school-affiliated institution (OR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.18-1.80; p  less then  0.01) compared to applicants during previous years. However, match rates were not different in terms of geographical regions. Virtual interviews are more cost-effective for both applicants and programs, however, this study demonstrates there are associated changes with this new interview structure. The utility of virtual interviews as a standard method in the future should take this change in trend into consideration.Joint immobilization, which ensures rest and accelerates tissue recovery in musculoskeletal disorders, often causes joint contracture, for which there is still no effective prevention. To address this, we investigated the effects of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) in preventing joint contracture, in a unilaterally immobilized knee rat model. Under general anesthesia, ESWT (0.25 mJ/mm2 , 3000 shot, 4 Hz, 3 days/week) was administered from 1 day after immobilization up to 2, 4, and 6 weeks. The immobilized control group received general anesthesia without ESWT. We evaluated joint angle, tissue elasticity, and gene and protein expression related to fibrosis, inflammation, and angiogenesis in the joint capsule. Relative to the control, the ESWT group had greater joint angle at 4 and 6 weeks, and lower posterior-capsule elasticity at 6 weeks. CuCPT22 In the ESWT group, at 6 weeks, gene expression of collagen type I (col1α1), connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) was significantly downregulated, whereas interleukin-6 (IL-6) and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) gene expression was upregulated, relative to that in the control.
