The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has resulted in thousands of deaths in the world. Information about prediction model of prognosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection is scarce. We used machine learning for processing laboratory findings of 110 patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia (including 51 non-survivors and 59 discharged patients). The maximum relevance minimum redundancy (mRMR) algorithm and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator logistic regression model were used for selection of laboratory features. Seven laboratory features selected in the model were prothrombin activity, urea, white blood cell, interleukin-2 receptor, indirect bilirubin, myoglobin, and fibrinogen degradation products. The signature constructed using the seven features had 98% [93%, 100%] sensitivity and 91% [84%, 99%] specificity in predicting outcome of SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia. Thus it is feasible to establish an accurate prediction model of outcome of SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia based on laboratory findings. This work is aimed at evaluating the conversion of Pterocarpus indicus twigs into activated carbon via composite chemical activation for methylene blue and congo red dyes adsorption. The activated carbons were prepared by single-step chemical activation using zinc chloride and/or phosphoric acid at different mass impregnation ratios at 600 °C for 90 min. The activated carbons were characterized for textural properties and surface chemistry. The batch adsorption was investigated at different concentrations (5-1,000 mg/L), contact times (2-540 min) and temperatures (30-60 °C). Phosphoric acid-activated twigs carbon showed a high surface area of 1,445 m2/g with maximum methylene blue adsorption capacity of 438 mg/g. On the other hand, a composite-activated carbon yields a 217 mg/g of congo red removal. The adsorption data for both dyes fitted well with Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetics models, indicating the predominance of chemical adsorption through monolayer coverage of dye molecules on the homogenous surface of activated carbon. The thermodynamics properties of dye adsorption onto twigs-derived activated carbons indicated that the process is endothermic, spontaneous and favourable at high temperature. Overall, activated carbons derived from Pterocarpus indicus twigs could be effectively used for dye wastewater treatment.Galactose-deficient IgA1 (Gd-IgA1) is important in the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy (IgAN). Proteasome inhibitor A Gd-IgA1-specific monoclonal antibody (KM55) has revealed glomerular Gd-IgA1 deposition solely in patients with IgAN and IgA vasculitis with nephritis (IgAV-N). However, this specificity is controversial and has not been demonstrated in pediatric patients. Here, we conducted double-immunofluorescence staining of IgA and Gd-IgA1 in 60 pediatric patients with various glomerular diseases. We divided patients into four groups (1) patients with IgAN and IgAV-N (n = 23); (2) patients with immunocomplex-mediated glomerulonephritis accompanied by IgA deposition, including lupus nephritis, membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, and membranous nephropathy (n = 14); (3) patients with other glomerular diseases involving IgA deposition, including idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS), oligomeganephronia, Alport syndrome, dense deposit disease, and crescentic glomerulonephritis (n = 11); and (4) patients with IgA-negative diseases including INS, membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, membranous nephropathy, oligomeganephronia, Alport syndrome, C3 glomerulonephritis, poststreptococcal acute glomerulonephritis, and hemolytic uremic syndrome (n = 12). KM55 staining revealed Gd-IgA1-positive findings in 23/23 patients in Group 1 and 13/14 patients in Group 2, but not in patients in Groups 3 or 4. Therefore, KM55 may detect incidental IgA deposition in pediatric patients. Gd-IgA1 may be involved in the pathogenesis of these immune-related diseases; alternatively, KM55 may recognize IgA-related immunocomplexes in a non-specific manner.Following Freud's admission of his own 'dependence on Spinoza's doctrine', the present paper extends psychoanalytic discernment of a bright line from Baruch Spinoza's natural philosophy across the evolution of natural and social sciences to Freud's development of psychoanalysis and forward, to contemporary psychoanalytic thinking. The lens through which these developments unfold is a close reading of Spinoza's first, incomplete methodological statement, the Treatise on the Emendation of the Intellect. Tracking both the developing form and textual literary context from which this Spinozan inquiry proceeds, we recognize specific anticipations of contemporary psychoanalytic phenomena. The author addresses the essential aspects regarding the definition of the paternal function in metapsychological terms how it forms and develops in the mental world, which functions it serves, or could come to serve, in the dynamic of mental functioning, and lastly, the consequent clinical implications, in particular the formation and development of symbolic capacity. In the second part, using two clinical vignettes and a clinical case, the author attempts to discuss its link to the theme of masculinity, suggesting a brief reflection on the challenges presented to the specificities of the analytical clinic.Lung surface is the first line of contact between inhaled carbon nanomaterials, CNMs, and the organism, so this is the place where pulmonary health effects begin. The paper analyzes the influence of several CNMs (single- and multi-walled nanotubes with various surface area 90-1,280 m2/g and aspect ratio 8-3,750) on the surface-active properties of the lung surfactant, LS, model (Survanta). Effects of CNM concentration (0.1-1 mg/ml) and surface oscillation rate were determined using the oscillating drop method at simulated breathing conditions (2-10 s per cycle, 37 °C). Based on the values of apparent elasticity and viscosity of the interfacial region, new parameters Sε and Sμ were proposed to evaluate potential effect of particles on the LS at various breathing rates. Some of tested CNMs (e.g., COOH- functionalized short nanotubes) significantly influenced the surfactant dynamics, while the other had weaker effects even at high particle concentration. Analysis of changes in Sε and Sμ provides a new way to evaluate of a possible disturbance of the basic functions of LS.
