We carry out a review of the history and biological activities of one domesticated gene in higher primates, SETMAR, by discussing current controversies. Our purpose is to open a new outlook that will serve as a framework for future work about SETMAR, possibly in the field of cognition development.

What is newly important about SETMAR can be summarized as follows (1) the whole protein sequence is under strong purifying pressure; (2) its role is to strengthen existing biological functions rather than to provide new ones; (3) it displays a tissue-specific pattern of expression, at least for the alternative-splicing it undergoes. Studies reported here demonstrate that SETMAR protein(s) may be involved in essential networks regulating replication, transcription and translation. Moreover, during embryogenesis, SETMAR appears to contribute to brain development.

Our review underlines for the first time that SETMAR directly interacts with genes involved in brain functions related to vocalization and vocal learning. These findings pave the way for future works regarding SETMAR and the development of cognitive abilities in higher primates.

Patients with persistent globus sensation, throat clearing, chronic cough, hoarseness, and other throat symptoms account for a large proportion of patients in ears, nose, and throat clinics. Laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) is increasingly valued by otolaryngologists. Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) is possibly a new method for the treatment of LPRD. This trial aims to determine whether TEAS combined with proton pump inhibitor (PPI) is better than PPI alone in the treatment of LPRD.

This prospective randomized controlled trial will be implemented in a tertiary hospital in China. BRD0539 manufacturer Seventy patients diagnosed with LPRD will be randomly assigned to the TEAS + PPI group (intervention group) or PPI group (control group), at a ratio of 11. In addition to using PPI, the intervention group will receive TEAS at four groups of acupoints, and each group will be treated for 15 min, once for 60 min, five times a week, for 12 weeks, 60 times. The main outcome will be changes in the Reflux Symptom Index scores at 4, 12, and 24 weeks after treatment. The secondary outcomes will include changes in the reflux finding score, Laryngopharyngeal Reflux-Health-related Quality of Life score, and throat pain visual analog scale score.

This trial will explore the feasibility of TEAS combined with PPI for the treatment of LPRD and provide potential evidence for its effectiveness and safety. The results of this study will be published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Civil wars in the Great Lakes region resulted in massive displacement of people to neighboring countries including Uganda. With associated disease epidemics related to this conflict, a disease surveillance system was established aiming for timely detection of diseases and rapid response to outbreaks. We describe the evaluation of and lessons learned from the public health surveillance system set up in refugee settlements in Uganda.

We conducted a cross-sectional survey using the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Updated Guidelines for Evaluating Public Health Surveillance Systems and the Uganda National Technical Guidelines for Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response in four refugee settlements in Uganda-Bidibidi, Adjumani, Kiryandongo and Rhino Camp. Using semi-structured questionnaires, key informant and focus group discussion guides, we interviewed 53 health facility leaders, 12 key personnel and 224 village health team members from 53 health facilities and 112 villages and assessed kemprovement to align surveillance systems in refugee settlements with the mainstream surveillance system in the country. Implementing Partners should be urged to offer support for surveillance and training of surveillance staff on Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response to maintain effective surveillance functions. Functionalization of district teams ensures achievement of surveillance functions and attributes. Regular supervision of and support to health facility surveillance personnel is essential. Harmonization of reporting improves surveillance functions and attributes and appropriation of funds by government to districts to support refugee settlements is complementary to maintain effective surveillance of priority diseases in the northern and central part of Uganda.

Lymphoedema is a common, distressing and debilitating condition that can be related to cancer and its treatment or other conditions. Little is known about current practices in the diagnosis, assessment and management of lymphoedema in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC).

To describe current practices in diagnosing, assessing and managing cancer-related and other forms of lymphoedema in LMIC, and related barriers and facilitators.

An exploratory-descriptive qualitative study. Participants were lymphoedema experts or health care professionals identified via published lymphoedema papers and professional organizations respectively. Sampling was purposive to ensure a diversity of perspectives and experience. Data collection was via semi-structured telephone/video interviews, and questions canvassed participants' experiences and perceptions of lymphoedema care in LMIC. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Analysis proceeded via inductive coding before mapping codes to the World Health families to support self-management involved following the person-centred approach, establishing clear communication, promoting adherence to management, adapting management to available resources, and involving patient family and friends in lymphoedema care.

Raising community and health professional awareness regarding lymphoedema and its management is a key first step to improving care outcomes. Resources for clinicians and patients/families developed for lymphoedema care in HIC need to be adapted for low resource settings.

The sleep reduction can change healthy people's hemodynamic control and cardiovascular regulation through increased inflammatory response and altered endothelial function. The objective the study to analyze the association between sleep duration and cardiometabolic risk factors in adolescents in the birth cohort of São Luís (1997/98).

This is a cross-sectional study with adolescents participating in the birth cohort of São Luís (1997/98). Sleep duration was evaluated using accelerometer data (Actigraph wGT3X-BT). Glycemia, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) and triglycerides were considered cardiometabolic factors. The Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) was used to identify the minimum set of adjustment for confounding.

Out of 1,268 adolescents, 50.3% of them were male. The prevalence of sleep duration of less than 6h per day was 31.1%. The mean glycemia value was 91.8mg/dL (± 15.9), DBP was 71.3mmHg (± 7.5), SBP was 114.9mmHg (± 12.3), HDL was 48.5mg/dL (± 11.6), LDL was 89.0mg/dL (± 25.7), the total cholesterol was 156.0mg/dL (± 31.1), and triglycerides was 93.6mg/dL (± 47.2). The crude analysis showed an association between sleep duration and SBP and LDL-c. In the adjusted analysis, the associations did not remain.

Advance Care Planning including living wills and durable powers of attorney for healthcare is a highly relevant topic aiming to increase patient autonomy and reduce medical overtreatment. Data from patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) are not currently available. The main objective of this study was to survey the frequency of advance directives (AD) in patients with head and neck cancer.

In this single center cross-sectional study, we evaluated patients during their regular follow-up consultations at Germany's largest tertiary referral center for head and neck cancer, regarding the frequency, characteristics, and influencing factors for the creation of advance directives using a questionnaire tailored to our cohort. The advance directives included living wills, durable powers of attorney for healthcare, and combined directives.

Four hundred and forty-six patients were surveyed from 07/01/2019 to 12/31/2019 (response rate = 68.9%). The mean age was 62.4 years (SD 11.9), 26.9% were women (n = 120). 46likelihood of having an appropriate document.
