Heavy metal ions (HMI) have attracted worldwide concern due to their serious environmental pollution which led to the risk of health conditions. From Red Malus floribunda fruits, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were prepared, followed by hybrid-spherical shaped hydrogel particles (CGCDs) were prepared. The prepared CGCDs were utilized as adsorbents for HMI-(Hg(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), and Cr(III)) from water. N-CDs with about 4.0 nm in diameter were characterized by various techniques such as field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and attenuated total reflection-fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) that confirm the presence of nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon functionalities. The prepared spherical CGCDs were characterized very well before it was used as HMI adsorbents. The sizes of the CGCDs were ranges between 20 and 300 μm and the degree of swelling was calculated as 1320 %. ATR-FTIR and X-ray diffraction analyses reveal the presence of N-CDs in CGCDs. Further, FE-SEM confirms the spherical shape morphology of CGCDs. Three different concentrations of HMI solutions were 500 mg/L, 1000 mg/L, and 1500 mg/L. Hg(II) adsorbed proficiently by CGCDs in single metal ion systems with ~72 % and almost complete removal of Hg(II) ions (99 %) in multiple metal ion systems was observed. Moreover, all metal ions Hg(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), and Cr(III) were efficiently (>70 %) removed in multiple systems by CGCDs. After HMI adsorption experiments, the elemental mapping from FE-SEM and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies conveys the presence of HMI on CGCDs. This suggests that CGCDs would be a suitable adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of multiple HMI from wastewater.Predicting water contamination by statistical models is a useful tool to manage health risk in recreational beaches. Extreme contamination events, i.e. those exceeding normative are generally rare with respect to bathing conditions and thus the data is said to be imbalanced. Modeling and predicting those rare events present unique challenges. Here we introduce and evaluate several machine learning techniques and metrics to model imbalanced data and evaluate model performance. We do so by using a) simulated data-sets and b) a real data base with records of faecal coliform abundance monitored for 10 years in 21 recreational beaches in Uruguay (N ≈ 19000) using in situ and meteorological variables. We discuss advantages and disadvantages of the methods and provide a simple guide to perform models for a general audience. We also provide R codes to reproduce model fitting and testing. We found that most Machine Learning techniques are sensitive to imbalance and require specific data pre-treatment (e.g. upsampling) to improve performance. Accuracy (i.e. correctly classified cases over total cases) is not adequate to evaluate model performance on imbalanced data set. Instead, true positive rates (TPR) and false positive rates (FPR) are recommended. Among the 52 possible candidate algorithms tested, the stratified Random forest presented the better performance improving TPR in 50% with respect to baseline (0.4) and outperformed baseline in the evaluated metrics. Support vector machines combined with upsampling method or synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) performed well, similar to Adaboost with SMOTE. These results suggests that combining modeling strategies is necessary to improve our capacity to anticipate water contamination and avoid health risk.Intense human use and high construction density in coastal areas are stressors to sandy beaches. Pollution by marine debris is a major problem on beaches worldwide. This study pioneered an assessment of marine debris characterization over time on beaches with different levels of access. In two periods and seasons, marine debris was sampled on nine sandy beaches of Rio de Janeiro, grouped by levels of access. The general marine debris density has decreased over time, accompanied by an improvement in public cleaning mechanisms. The most important predictor for the majority of marine debris items is related to accessibility; beaches with restricted access showed a reduction in the abundance of most items. High marine debris densities, even on beaches with restricted access, showed that all evaluated beaches can be sinks for marine debris circulating in marine waters. Beach cleaning strategy improvements will be inefficient unless integrated marine debris management is implemented. The increasing concerns and management needs on marine biodiversity have escalated the requirement for timely documentation of the marine taxa. We first established a comprehensive ecological checklist of Korean Brachyura through a meta-analysis of 74 documents (since the 1870s). A total of 247 species inhabiting the Korean coastal waters are listed with some key ecological information; habitat, substrate, distribution, and delta +. The crabs predominated on Jejudo Island, at the southernmost point of Korea, followed by the South Sea, West Sea, and East Sea. Portunus trituberculatus and Hemigrapsus sanguineus were cosmopolitan species widely distributed across the three seas. Dynamic oceanographic settings of the South Sea, such as archipelago, Rias coast, varied habitats, and (in)direct influence of Kuroshio warm current, seemed to support high crab diversity. The rocky and subtidal habitats represented biodiversity hotspots. The present study would be a useful baseline for gathering further ecological information of globally important marine taxa in Korea and elsewhere. This study analyzes the occurrence and distribution of plastic litter and the entrapment of plastic by wrack beached on a natural reserve. Large microplastics (2.5 - 5 mm) were the most abundant plastic size category detected. The main color and shape were white and fragment, respectively. find more The plastics entrapped by egagropiles were mainly transparent fibers. We analyzed the correlation between the weights of plastic litter and vegetal wrack in two transects, selected for their different environmental characteristics. The transect closer to a breakwater showed a significant positive correlation between the weights of plastics and wrack, while the other transect suggested a casual pattern of plastic deposition on the beach. Further research is suggested to focus on the role of breakwaters in altering marine currents and enhancing plastic beaching.Lyme borreliosis is a zoonotic tick-borne infection representing the most frequent vector-borne disease in the northern hemisphere. The Mediterranean rim is generally described as unsuitable for the European vector, Ixodes ricinus. We conducted an epidemiological study to assess whether I. ricinus was present and study its infection status for tick-borne bacteria. Ticks originating from southeastern France were obtained from flagging sampling and removed from animals and tick-bitten patients. Species level identification used morphological keys and MALDI-TOF MS. Quantitative PCR and sequencing assays were used to detect and identify tick-associated bacteria (Borrelia, Rickettsia, Anaplasmataceae, Bartonella, Coxiella burnetii) in each specimen. A total of 1232 ticks were collected in several localities. Among these, 863 were identified as I. ricinus (70%). Bacterial screening allowed identification of Lyme group Borrelia among I. ricinus ticks originating from various regional areas. Other emerging tick-borne pathogens like Borrelia miyamotoi and Rickettsia species were also detected. The Alpes-Maritimes region, part of the French Riviera, harbours I. ricinus ticks infected with Lyme group Borrelia and several other tick-borne bacterial agents. Clinicians and outdoor activity participants should be aware of the local Lyme borreliosis transmission risk. The Kori-1 nuclear power plant has been permanently shut down since 2017, and its major structures, systems, and components are currently planned to be dismantled according to the final decommissioning plan. To protect dismantling workers from external radiation exposure dose during decommissioning, we propose a dose reduction method involving dual-layered Pb-free shielding. Based on the Monte Carlo method, the performance of the abovementioned method and various types of materials are optimized and estimated in terms of the equivalent dose rate and radiation shielding rate. The results showed that Pb-free shielding with dual layers exhibited better performance than the conventional shield. In addition, the Pb-free material of WC-Co showed a relatively high performance for the reduction of the external radiation exposure dose in the dismantling process of the steam generator (S/G). In the dismantling process of the S/G, the results of our simulation will offer the choice of materials and flexibility in the design of Pb-free shielding with dual layers.Compton imaging is an imaging technique in which Compton scattering is used to produce images from a gamma-ray source. Compton imaging systems are also known as Compton camera. The basic design of Compton imaging systems consists of two-position detectors that are sensitive to the position and energy scattered from gamma rays. Compton camera efficiency is defined as the fraction of photons entering the scatterer (disperse) detector that undergoes only one Compton scattering and is then photoelectrically absorbed in the absorber detector. In the present study, the efficiency of a Compton camera was investigated based on semiconductor detectors using the GEANT4 simulation toolkit. In this study, the sensitivity of the efficiency of the Compton imaging systems to the distance between the source and the scatterer detector, the distance between the two detectors, dimensions, and thickness of the absorber and scatterer detectors, number of scatterer detectors with different thicknesses, the energy of radioisotope or detector plate, but a size larger than the absorber detector, it reaches a degree of saturation. Also, by increasing the thickness of the scatterer detector, the efficiency first increases and then reaches the maximum value and then decreases, and increasing the thickness of the absorber detector increases efficiency. The results of the simulation in the present paper have an acceptable agreement with the experimental several types of research in the world. The results of this simulation can be considered for the design of Compton cameras. This study investigated the toxic effects of leachates from microplastic fragments of soles from four different types of shoes (slippers, trekking shoes, running shoes, and sneakers) on three aquatic organisms (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Daphnia magna, and Danio rerio). The chemical components in each leachate were identified; furthermore, chlorophyll a contents of C. reinhardtii were measured, and immobilization of D. magna and deformities in D. rerio were observed. The abnormalities observed in the test species exposed to the leachates were compared and chemical compounds majorly influencing the species were determined by principal component analysis (PCA). Sneaker leachate showed growth inhibitions in C. reinhardtii, immobility and mortality in D. magna, and severe abnormalities in D. rerio. Consequently, aquatic toxicity was majorly associated with benzothiazole, carbon disulfide, ethyl acetate, and p-xylene. The results showed that toxic chemicals could leach from load-originated microplastics when exposed to aquatic media, and consequently, induce significant negative effects on aquatic organisms.
