The aim of this study was to evaluate temperature-dependent development and survival of WCM at a wide range of constant temperatures in the laboratory (17-33 °C). The development time of each stage depended significantly on temperature and it was negatively correlated with temperature increase. At high temperatures (27-33 °C), individuals had shorter developmental times, with the shortest (6 days) at 33 °C, whereas at the lowest tested temperatures (17-19 °C), developmental time was almost 3× longer. Moreover, temperature had a clear effect on survival the higher the temperature, the lower the survival rate. These data provide information promoting more efficient and effective manipulation of WCM laboratory colonies, and further our understanding of the ramifications of temperature change on WCM physiology and implications for the growth and spread of this globally invasive pest.Conditions in immigrant detention centers facilitate the spread of infectious diseases like COVID-19. However, there is no publicly-available data on detainees' health characteristics, making it difficult to estimate the prevalence of risk among detained people. We use cross-sectional survey data from the only survey of detained immigrants, conducted in California in 2013-2014, to assess the prevalence and health-related correlates of health conditions among detained immigrants. We calculated the proportion of detained immigrants with chronic conditions, their interruptions in care, and stratified by sociodemographic characteristics, evaluating differences using two-tailed tests. Among 529 detained immigrants, 42.5% had at least one chronic health condition; 15.5% had multiple chronic conditions. 20.9% experienced disruption in care upon entering detention. 95.6% had access to stable housing in the U.S. Many detained people face health conditions that confer greater risk for poor outcomes with COVID-19. Stable residence can facilitate release of detainees via Alternatives to Detention programs.

Around 10% of gastric carcinomas (GC) contain Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA. We characterized the GC-specific antibody response to this common infection, which may provide a noninvasive method to detect EBV-positive GC and elucidate its contribution to carcinogenesis.
Plasma samples from EBV-positive (n = 28) and EBV-negative (n = 34) Latvian GC patients were immune-profiled against 85 EBV proteins on a multi-microbial Nucleic Acid Programmable Protein Array (EBV-NAPPA). Antibody responses were normalized for each sample as ratios to the median signal intensity (MNI) across all antigens, with seropositivity defined as MNI ≥ 2. Antibodies with ≥ 20% sensitivity at 95% specificity for tumor EBV status were verified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and validated in independent samples from Korea and Poland (n = 24 EBV-positive, n = 65 EBV-negative).
Forty anti-EBV IgG and eight IgA antibodies were detected by EBV-NAPPA in ≥ 10% of EBV-positive or EBV-negative GC patients, of which nine IgG antibrcinoma and lymphoma where humoral response is primarily directed against late lytic antigens. Specific anti-EBV antibodies could have utility for clinical diagnosis, epidemiologic studies, and immune-based precision treatment of EBV-positive GC.We investigated the recent epidemiology and characteristics of influenza-related hospitalization in Japanese children. This study included 3741 children with influenza. Children hospitalized for febrile seizures (FS) induced by etiologies other than influenza also served as a disease control. Most outpatients (92.8%) visited our hospital with complaints of respiratory symptoms, whereas FS were the most predominant symptoms of inpatients (58/154, 37.7%). Children with influenza-induced FS were significantly older than those with FS induced by other etiologies (P less then 0.001). Although the characteristics of severe influenza may vary throughout the world, the analysis of influenza-induced neurological disorders is important for understanding its epidemiology.
