The limited efficiency of conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in emerging pollutants (EPs) removal encourages the development of alternative technologies for the adequate treatment of wastewater, due to its adverse effects on human health and ecosystems. selleck chemicals The biological, physical or chemical hybrid technologies to treat EPs results interesting since they can enhance the performance of WWTPs. Among them, hybrid adsorption/biological technology could offer different possibilities that are explored in this work (PAC-MBR, PACT/GAC-CAS, BAC configurations). In this way, different variations in the adsorption process have been considered the form of the adsorbent, the feed to the system, and the type of biological process, either conventional activated sludge (CAS), membrane bioreactor (MBR) or biofilm systems. For each combination, the removal efficiency of micropollutants, classified according to their use into pharmaceuticals, personal care products (PCPs) and other micropollutants (mainly benzotriazoles) was analysed. From reported data, it was observed a beneficial synergistic effect of dipole moment and octanol-water partition coefficient on the removal efficiency of micropollutants by adsorption/biological hybrid technology. Finally, a preliminary economic evaluation of the powdered activated carbon in a conventional activated sludge reactor (PACT), powdered activated carbon-membrane bioreactor (PAC-MBR) and biological activated carbon (BAC) hybrid systems was carried out by analysing the capital expenditure (CAPEX) of plants for capacities up to 75,000 m3d-1. Likewise, estimations of adsorbent concentration for a hypothetical plant with a capacity of 10,000 m3d-1 is presented. Among these hybrid configurations, PAC-MBR achieved the highest micropollutant elimination percentages; however, it presents the highest CAPEX and activated carbon requirements.During January-February 2020, parts of China faced restricted mobility under COVID-19 quarantines, which have been associated with improved air quality. Because particulate pollutants scatter, diffuse, and absorb incoming solar radiation, a net negative radiative forcing, decreased air pollution can yield surface warming. As such, this study (1) documents the evolution of China's January-February 2020 air temperature and concurrent particulate changes; (2) determines the temperature response related to reduced particulates during the COVID-19 quarantine (C19Q); and (3) discusses the conceptual implications for temperature-dependent disease transmission. C19Q particulate evolution is monitored using satellite analyses, and concurrent temperature anomalies are diagnosed using surface stations and Aqua AIRS imagery. Meanwhile, two WRF-Chem simulations are forced by normal emissions and the satellite-based urban aerosol changes, respectively. Urban aerosols decreased from 27.1% of pre-C19Q aerosols to only 17.5% during C19Q. WRF-Chem resolved ~0.2 °C warming across east-central China, that represented a minor, though statistically significant contribution to C19Q temperature anomalies. The largest area of warming is concentrated south of Chengdu and Wuhan where temperatures increased between +0.2-0.3 °C. The results of this study are important for understanding the anthropogenic forcing on regional meteorology. Epidemiologically, the marginal, yet persistent, warming during C19Q may retard temperature-dependent disease transmission, possibly including SARS-CoV-2.The evolution of computer vision and image processing system paved the way that any technologists can extract quantitative data sets from the visual results of an image. Digital image processing (DIP) technique precisely measures and quantifies the image and eliminates the subjectivity of manual interpretation. DIP is a non-destructive, inexpensive and rapid method that has been used by many researchers in various applications of biofuel. In fuel science, DIP and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have been successfully applied for the classification of biodiesel, selection of biomass for biofuel production. DIP can be used in the combustion process and its control parameters, gas leakage, monitoring fuel reactant conversion reactions, impurities present and adulteration of fuel, also automation process of a fuel injection system. This review gives an overview of the applications of image processing in fuel science.Anthropogenic N emissions represent a potential threat for forest ecosystems, and environmental indicators that provide insight into the changing forest N cycle are needed. Tree ring N isotopic ratios (δ15N) appear as a contentious choice for this role as the exact mechanisms behind tree-ring δ15N changes seldom benefit from a scrutiny of the soil-to-tree N continuum. This study integrates the results from the analysis of soil chemistry, soil microbiome genomics, and δ15N values of soil N compounds, roots, ectomycorrhizal (EcM) fungi and recent tree rings of thirteen white spruce trees sampled in five stands, from two regions exposed to moderate anthropogenic N emissions (3.9 to 8.1 kg/ha/y) with distinctive δ15N signals. Our results reveal that airborne anthropogenic N with distinct δ15N signals may directly modify the NO3- δ15N values in surface soils, but not the ones of NH4+, the preferred N form of the studied trees. Hence, the tree-ring δ15N values reflect specific soil N conditions and assimilation modes by trees. Along with a wide tree-ring δ15N range, we report differences in soil nutrient content and N transformation rates; δ15N values of NH4+, total dissolved N (TDN) and EcM mantle enveloping the root tips; and bacterial and fungal community structures. We combine EcM mantle and root δ15N values with fungal identification to infer that hydrophobic EcM fungi transfer N from the dissolved organic N (DON) pool to roots under acidic conditions, and hydrophilic EcM fungi transfer various N forms to roots, which also assimilate N directly under less acidic conditions. Despite the complexities of soil biogeochemical properties and processes identified in the studied sites, in the end, the tree-ring δ15N averages inversely correlate with soil pH and anthropogenic N inputs, confirming white spruce tree-ring δ15N values as a suitable indicator for environmental research on forest N cycling.
