Medicare reimbursement trends across multiple surgical subspecialties have been analyzed; however, little has been reported regarding the long-term trends in reimbursement of hand surgery procedures. The aim of this study is to analyze trends in Medicare reimbursement for commonly performed hand surgeries.

Using the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Physician and Other Supplier Public Use File, we determined the 20 hand surgery procedure codes most commonly billed to Medicare in 2016. Tooth avulsion is a common cause of tooth loss. However, there is a significant lack of knowledge about dental trauma and the appropriate emergency procedures to handle these cases.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the educational effect of notebook covers illustrated with figures and informative texts about tooth avulsion and replantation in sixth-grade primary school pupils.

Sixth-grade pupils of two public school participated in this study. An experimental group consisting of 134 pupils received notebook covers illustrated with figures and informative texts about tooth avulsion and replantation, while a control group of 108 pupils received notebooks with neutral covers. An assessment of the educational effects on pupils was performed after 9 months, with a standardized questionnaire normally used to evaluate dental trauma. Statistical analysis was conducted with SPSS 21.0 (α = .05) for group description and comparison using chi-square and Student

tests.

Compared with the control group, the experimental group showed statistically significant improvements in correct meaning of dental trauma (38% vs. 58.2%); procedures to follow in the case of dental avulsion (2.8% vs. 70.9%); storing the avulsed tooth in milk (18.5% vs. 76.9%); general knowledge about dental anatomy (61.1% vs. 95.5%); and the ideal time for the tooth to remain outside the mouth prior to replantation (20.4% vs. 59.7%).

Biomechanical Study.

The search for optimal spinal alignment has led to the development of sophisticated formulas and software for preoperative planning. However, preoperative plans are not always appropriately executed since rod contouring during surgery is often subjective and estimated by the surgeon. We aimed to assess whether rods contoured to specific angles with a French rod bender using a template guide will be more accurate than rods contoured without a template.

Ten experienced spine surgeons were requested to contour two 125 × 5.5 mm Ti64 rods to 40°, 60° and 80° without templates and then 2 more rods using 2D metallic templates with the same angles. Rod angles were then measured for accuracy and compared.

Average angles for rods bent without a template to 40°, 60° and 80° were 60.2°, 78.9° and 97.5°, respectively. Without a template, rods were overbent by a mean of 18.9°. When using templates of 40°, 60° and 80°, mean bend angles were 41.5°, 59.1° and 78.7°, respectively, with an average underbend of 0.2°. Differences between the template and non-template groups for each target angle were all significant (p < 0.001).

Without the template, surgeons tend to overbend rods compared to the desired angle, while surgeons improved markedly with a template guide. This tendency to overbend could have significant impact on patient outcomes and risk of proximal junctional failure and warrants further research to better enable surgeons to more accurately execute preoperative alignment plans.

Patients & methods By analyzing the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database for 258 cases of stage I CC via univariate Cox analysis, LASSO and multivariate Cox regression analysis, we unveiled 11 MAGs as a signature that was also validated using Kaplan-Meier and receiver operating characteristic analyses. In addition, a metabolism-related nomogram was developed. Results High accuracy of this signature for prediction was observed (area under the curve at 1, 3 and 5 years was 0.964, 0.929 and 0.852 for the internal dataset and 0.759, 0.719 and 0.757 for the external dataset). The high-risk score group displayed markedly worse RFS than did the low-risk score group. The indicators performed well in our nomogram. Conclusions We identified a novel signature as a biomarker for predicting prognosis and a nomogram to facilitate the individual management of stage I CC patients.
