Next, every final model was subjected for strict validation employing the internationally accepted internal and external validation parameters. The proposed models could be applicable for data gap filling to determine hydrolysis half-lives of organic chemicals at different environmental conditions. Generally, presence of aliphatic ether and ether functional groups, high percentage of oxygen content in the molecule and presence of O-Si pairs of atoms at topological distance one, results in a shorter hydrolysis half-life of organic chemicals. On the other hand, higher unsaturation content and high percentage of nitrogen content in molecules lead to higher hydrolysis half-life. It is also found that branched and compact molecules will have a lower half-life while straight chain analogues will have a higher half-life. To the best of our knowledge, the presented models are the first reported QSPR models for hydrolysis half-lives of organic chemicals at different pH values.It is well known that the lack of an effective treatment of tuna wash processing wastewater may pose substantial environmental and public health hazards. The present work investigates the performance of biological treatment of tuna wash processing wastewater (TWPW) by using Yarrowia lipolytica. Under optimized experimental conditions (pH "6.40-6.50" and 29 °C), Y. lipolytica reduced the pollution level of the crude and the diluted TWPW after only 7 days of incubation. The Yarrowia treatment leaded to a reduction of 66% chemical oxygen demand, 69.8% total organic carbon, 66% salinity, and phosphorus total (100%) removal of the crude TWPW, while the treated-diluted TWPW revealed significant reductions in chemical oxygen demand and total organic carbon (75% and 74%, respectively), as well as salinity (68%). Interestingly, a total removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from the diluted TWPW was obtained. Under high salinity, an important Y. lipolytica biomass of 5 g L-1 is produced with high levels of lipids and protein contents at around 336 ± 12.2 mg g-1 and 302.15 ± 5.44 mg g-1, respectively. The phytotoxicity assessment of the treated TWPW on fenugreek seeds shows promising results, which reveals the good performance of Yarrowia treatment in reducing the toxicity of this wastewater.Improving carbon emissions performance in Chinese cities is a crucial way to promote China's sustainable development. Employing the super-efficiency SBM model, we first estimate the carbon emissions efficiency (CEE) of 262 Chinese cities from 2003 to 2016. Then we study and explain the club convergence of CEE combining Markov and spatial Markov models and Moran's I test method. The results show that CEE has improved, especially for the western and northeastern cities. The efficiency of the northwest cities is low, while those of the central and coastal cities are relatively high. Club convergence exists in China's urban CEE. Cities with high- and low-level efficiency have much higher convergence levels. There are significant spatial agglomeration and spillover effects in China's urban CEE, contributing to the club convergence. Our analysis suggests that "cross-border" cooperation and communication between cities in different clubs should be highly promoted. Cities in high-level efficiency clubs are encouraged to play its role in radiating the lower-level cities. And the Chinese government is encouraged to strengthen carbon emissions mitigation in low-level areas through combining the green "Belt and Road" construction with the establishment of a national carbon market.Considering the role democratic structures play in shaping the policies that enhance environmental quality, this paper tests the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis by incorporating the role of energy consumption and democratic accountability for nine countries between 1990 and 2014. The pooled mean group (PMG) methodology and Emirmahmutoglu-Kose Granger causality test are employed. The empirical results validate the EKC hypothesis in the long run. The results also confirm that energy consumption significantly increases CO2 emissions in the long run and short run, while democratic accountability significantly reduces CO2 emissions in the long run. Causality test results indicate a two-way causal relationship between democratic accountability and economic growth, and also between energy consumption and economic growth. The study recommends among others, the need to strengthen democratic accountability and improve access to information that protects the environment.The staggering production of rock dusts and quarry by-products of mining activities poses an immense environmental burden that warrants research for value-added recycling of these rock mineral powders (RMP). In this study, an incubation experiment was conducted to determine potassium (K) and micronutrients (Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn) release from a quarry RMP to support plant nutrition. Four different size fractions of the RMP were incubated with organic amendments (cow dung and legume straw) under controlled conditions for 90 days. Samples were collected at different intervals (7, 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 days) for the analysis of available K and micronutrients in the mineral-OM mixtures and leachates. There was a significant (p  less then 0.05) increase in pH of leachates from the mineral-OM mixtures. The K release was significantly higher from the finer size fraction of RMP. About 18.7% Zn added as RMP was released during the incubation period. Zn release increased from 4.7 to 23.2% as the particle size of RMP decreased. Similarly, Cu release from RMP increased from 2.9 to 21.6%, with a decrease in the particle size. Fe and Mn recovery from RMP recorded 11.2 and 6.6%, respectively. Combined application of OM and RMP showed significantly higher nutrient release than other treatments. This study indicates that effective blending of RMP with organic amendments could be a potential source of K and micronutrients in agriculture without posing a risk of toxic element contamination to the soil.Misinformation often continues to influence inferential reasoning after clear and credible corrections are provided; this effect is known as the continued influence effect. It has been theorized that this effect is partly driven by misinformation familiarity. Some researchers have even argued that a correction should avoid repeating the misinformation, as the correction itself could serve to inadvertently enhance misinformation familiarity and may thus backfire, ironically strengthening the very misconception that it aims to correct. While previous research has found little evidence of such familiarity backfire effects, there remains one situation where they may yet arise when correcting entirely novel misinformation, where corrections could serve to spread misinformation to new audiences who had never heard of it before. This article presents three experiments (total N = 1718) investigating the possibility of familiarity backfire within the context of correcting novel misinformation claims and after a 1-week study-test delay. While there was variation across experiments, overall there was substantial evidence against familiarity backfire. Corrections that exposed participants to novel misinformation did not lead to stronger misconceptions compared to a control group never exposed to the false claims or corrections. This suggests that it is safe to repeat misinformation when correcting it, even when the audience might be unfamiliar with the misinformation.The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic is a global health priority. Given that cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of morbidity around the world and that several trials have reported severe cardiovascular damage in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2, a substantial number of COVID-19 patients with underlying cardiovascular diseases need to continue their medications in order to improve myocardial contractility and to prevent the onset of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs), including heart failure. Some of the current life-saving medications may actually simultaneously expose patients to a higher risk of severe COVID-19. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), a key counter regulator of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), is the main entry gate of SARS-CoV-2 into human host cells and an established drug target to prevent heart failure. In fact, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, and mineralocorticoid antagonists may augment ACE2 levels to protect organs from angiotensin II overload. Elevated ACE2 expression on the host cell surface might facilitate viral entrance, at the same time sudden nonadherence to these medications triggers MACEs. Hence, safety issues in the use of RAS inhibitors in COVID-19 patients with cardiac dysfunction remain an unsolved dilemma and need paramount attention. Although ACE2 generally plays an adaptive role in both healthy subjects and patients with systolic and/or diastolic dysfunction, we conducted a literature appraisal on its maladaptive role. Understanding the exact role of ACE2 in COVID-19 patients at risk of heart failure is needed to safely manage RAS inhibitors in frail and non-frail critically ill patients.Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has been shown to be more prevalent among populations living with HIV. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence is crucial for populations living with HIV as it significantly increases the likelihood of attaining and maintaining viral suppression. Previous findings on the association between CSA and ART adherence have been mixed. The current mixed-methods systematic review aimed to identify quantitative and qualitative studies from CINAHL, PsycInfo, PubMed, and Web of Science examining the relationship between CSA and ART adherence. Authors were also contacted if relevant data were unpublished. Studies had to be published from January 1, 2000 to April 1, 2019, written in English, and examined CSA as an exposure and ART adherence as an outcome. Cytoskeletal Signaling inhibitor Four domains were combined (1) childhood sexual abuse; (2) child; (3) antiretroviral; and (4) adherence. Eight quantitative and two qualitative studies were retained. The results showed that four quantitative studies found no association while the other four found factors such as timing of victimization, mental health and gender influenced the association between CSA and ART adherence. Themes emerging from the qualitative studies included use of ART evoking memories of CSA; CSA impacting mental health; and mental health treatment improving ART adherence. Mixed insights included the intricate links between CSA and ART adherence and the role of external factors on the relationship. ART adherence intervention programs may be needed for people who have experienced CSA. However, future studies are needed that will examine the association between CSA and ART adherence and include subgroup analyses.

Hyperoxia is a well-known cause of cerebral white matter injury in preterm infants with male sex being an independent and critical risk factor for poor neurodevelopmental outcome. Sex is therefore being widely considered as one of the major decisive factors for prognosis and treatment of these infants. But unfortunately, we still lack a clear view of the molecular mechanisms that lead to such a profound difference. Hence, using mouse-derived primary oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs), we investigated the molecular factors and underlying mechanisms behind the differential response of male and female cells towards oxidative stress.

We demonstrate that oxidative stress severely affects cellular functions related to energy metabolism, stress response, and maturation in the male-derived OPCs, whereas the female cells remain largely unaffected. CNPase protein level was found to decline following hyperoxia in male but not in female cells. This impairment of maturation was accompanied by the downregulation of nucleoporin and nuclear lamina proteins in the male cells.
