It explains, various hybrid wet scrubbing techniques can perform well under mild condition with possible improvements such as development of stable, heterogeneous catalysts, fast and in-situ regeneration for large scale applications. Finally, it discussed recovery of resources i.e., N2O, NH3 and N2, the key challenges about several competitive side products and loss of catalytic activity over time to treat toxic gases via feasible solutions by hybrid wet scrubbing techniques.Promotion of crop yield by compost application is generally thought to be ascribed to a better supply of macro and micronutrients, however the importance of compost DOM on plant growth has not been well demonstrated. In this study, composting of chicken manure, spent mushroom and sawdust was conducted under aerobic or anaerobic condition to determine the effects of compost DOM on plant growth. It was found that dissolved organic matter (DOM) first increased and then decreased in compost, and DOM of anaerobic compost was slightly higher than that of aerobic compost. EMD638683 When compost extract was applied to maize, among N, P, K and DOM content, it was DOM content that was most significantly and strongly related to plant biomass (r = 0.843, p<0.001). Compost DOM was also strongly related to soil properties, the improvement of which can also promote plant growth. Compost application confirmed that higher compost DOM results in greater plant biomass. In order to facilitate compost DOM accumulation, we designed a novel composting process which combined aerobic and anaerobic treatments, and the resulting compost (A-Ana compost) with the highest amount of DOM displayed the best performance in promotion of plant growth. A-Ana compost was able to increase maize biomass by 32.71% and 12.40% compared with only anaerobic or aerobic compost, respectively. Therefore, DOM is a critical factor determining compost quality and it is feasible to manipulate composting oxygen supply condition to increase compost DOM, which will lead to increased plant yield.Microbial oxidation of As(III) by biofilm bioreactors followed by adsorption is a promising and environment friendly approach to remediate As(III) contaminated groundwater; however, poor activity, stability and expandability of the bioreactors hampered their industrious applications. To resolve this issue, we constructed a new biofilm bioreactor using a powerful chemoautotrophic As(III)-oxidizing bacterium Rhizobium sp. A219. This strain has strong ability to form biofilms and possesses very high As(III)-oxidizing activities in both planktonic and biofilm forms. Perlites were used as the biofilm carriers. Long-term operations suggest that the bioreactor has very high efficiency, stability and scalability under different geochemical conditions, and it is cheap and easy to construct and operate. During the operations, it is only required to supply air, nothing else. All the common contaminants in groundwater slightly affected the bioreactor As(III)-oxidizing activity. The common contaminants in groundwater can be largely removed through assimilation by the bacterial cells as nutrition. The bioreactor completely oxidize 1.0, 5.0, 10.0, 20.0 and 30.0 mg/L As(III) in 12, 18, 20, 25 and 30 min, respectively. Approximately 18, 18, 12, 12 and 21 min were needed to oxidize 1.1 mg/L As(III) at 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 °C, respectively. The bioreactor works well under the pH values of 5-8, and the most optimal was 7.0. The data suggest that this bioreactor possesses the highest efficiency and stability, and thus has the great potential for industrial applications among all the described As(III)-oxidizing bioreactors derived from a single bacterium.Bio-trickling filters (BTFs) can be used to remediate pollution by volatile organic compounds such as toluene. To investigate the effect of filler voidage on pressure drop (△P), two parallel BTFs were constructed using ceramsite with different voidages (47.5% for BTF1 and 55% for BTF2) and inoculated with Fusarium fungus to purify toluene. Commutation and stagnation operations were explored as ways to relieve △P. In BTF1, commutation temporarily relieved △P and maintained it for 7 days. Implementing stagnation on the 178th day for 69 days effectively reduced the △P from 720 Pa/m to below 20 Pa/m, which was maintained for 36 days. Compared with BTF1, the filler in BTF2 effectively delayed the increase in △P for 70 days or more and ensured stable operation for as long as 174 days. High-throughput sequencing revealed that Fusarium was mainly replaced by Protoctista, Fronsecaea and other fungi in both BTFs, although there were significant differences in their microbial communities. The influences of commutation and stagnation operations on fungal evolution were more obvious in BTF2, in relation to both time and space. The results provide guidance for designing better BTFs to treat hazardous pollutants.Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are emerging contaminants that are coming under increasing scrutiny. Currently, there is a paucity of effects data for marine aquatic life, limiting the assessment of ecological risks and compliance with water quality policies. In the present study, the toxicity of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) to four standard marine laboratory toxicity testing species, encompassing five endpoints, were evaluated 1) 96-h embryo-larval normal development for the purple sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus); 2) 48-h embryo-larval normal development and normal survival for the Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis); 3) 96-h survival of opossum shrimp (Americamysis bahia); and 4) 24-h light output for the bioluminescent dinoflagellate Pyrocystis lunula. All species were tested using standard United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and/or American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International protocols. For PFOS and PFOA, the order of species sensitivity, starting with the most sensitive, was M. galloprovincialis, S. purpuratus, P. lunula, and A. bahia. The range of median lethal or median effect concentrations for PFOS (1.1-5.1 mg L-1) and PFOA (10-24 mg L-1) are comparable to the relatively few toxicity effect values available for marine species. In addition to providing effects data for PFOA and PFOS, this study indicates these species and endpoints are sensitive to PFAS such that their use will be appropriate for deriving toxicity data with other PFAS in marine ecosystems.
