High-quality studies (n = 13), consisting mainly of MRI-based radiomics to predict response in rectal cancer, were able to predict response with good performance. Radiomics literature in CRC is highly heterogeneous, but it nonetheless holds promise for the prediction of outcome. The most evidence is available for MRI-based radiomics in rectal cancer. Future radiomics research in CRC should focus on independent validation of existing models rather than on developing new models. The aim of this study was to investigate prostate radiotherapy techniques for the patients with hip prosthesis in 4 different field setups. Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) technique was used in 4 different cases (1) using full VMAT arcs (VMAT_F); (2) same arcs as in case 1 but with avoidance sectors (VMAT_ASEC); (3) as case 2 but with the addition of a lateral static field through the prosthesis (VMAT_ASEC+STAT); (4) as in case 1 but with an automated structure avoidance option to avoid irradiation through the prosthesis (VMAT_ASTR). Fifteen previously treated prostate patients were retrospectively selected to this study. Treatment plans were created for all patients using all 4 techniques. The potential prosthesis misalignment in the treatment setup was modeled by moving the prosthesis 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 cm ventrally and dorsally and recalculating the plans in each case. For VMAT_ASEC, the dose parameters for organs at risk were the highest and the dose coverage of the target volume was the poorest when compared to the other techniques. For VMAT_ASEC+STAT, the movement of the prosthesis changed the target dose distribution the most. VMAT_F and VMAT_ASTR fulfilled the planning criteria the best, even when the prosthesis was misaligned. VMAT_F radiated through the prosthesis more than VMAT_ASTR and increased the dose near the prosthesis surface when compared to VMAT_ASTR. VMAT_ASTR and VMAT_F were the most robust techniques for the patients with the hip prosthesis considering plan quality and the effect of positioning errors. The increased prosthesis surface dose with VMAT_F and possible dose calculation uncertainties favors the use of VMAT_ASTR.Intra-operative contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is a relatively standardized procedure in brain neurosurgery, but it is still underused in spinal cord and intramedullary tumor evaluation. We reviewed and analyzed the intra-operative data from a surgical series of patients harboring intramedullary spinal cord tumors who underwent surgery under CEUS guidance. CEUS was performed in 12 patients (age range 13-55 y); all lesions had ill-defined boundaries or peritumoral cysts at preliminary intra-operative B-mode ultrasound. CEUS highlighted the tumors in all cases. The contrast agent's spinal distribution revealed different phases (arterial, peak, washout), as observed in the brain, but these appeared to be slower and less intense. In our experience, intra-operative CEUS allows surgeons to assess spinal cord perfusion and highlight intramedullary tumors in real time. As for other imaging modalities, ultrasound contrast agents add valuable information over baseline imaging, and their use should be fostered to better understand microbubble distribution dynamics. The EkoSonic endovascular system has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the controlled and selective infusion of physician specified fluids, including thrombolytics, into the peripheral vasculature and the pulmonary arteries. The objective of this study was to explore whether this catheter technology could sustain cavitation nucleated by infused Definity, to support subsequent studies of ultrasound-mediated drug delivery to diseased arteries. The concentration and attenuation spectroscopy of Definity were assayed before and after infusion at 0.3, 2.0 and 4.0 mL/min through the EkoSonic catheter. PCI was used to map and quantify stable and inertial cavitation as a function of Definity concentration in a flow phantom mimicking the porcine femoral artery. The 2.0 mL/min infusion rate yielded the highest surviving Definity concentration and acoustic attenuation. Cavitation was sustained throughout each 15 ms ultrasound pulse, as well as throughout the 3 min infusion. These results demonstrate a potential pathway to use cavitation nucleation to promote drug delivery with the EkoSonic endovascular system.Vascular ultrasound imaging is inherently hampered by low lateral resolution and contrast. Steering of the ultrasound beams can be used to overcome these limitations in superficial artery imaging because the aperture-to-depth ratio is relatively high. However, in arteries located at larger depths, the steered beams do not overlap for larger steering angles. In this study, the ultrasound probe is physically translated over the abdomen to create large angles between acquisitions, while maintaining overlap on the abdominal aorta. this website In one phantom setup and 11 volunteers, 2-D cross-sectional multi-perspective ultrasound images of the abdominal aorta were acquired using seven angles between -45° and +45°. Automatic registration of the recorded images was performed by automatic feature detection of the aorta and spine. This automatic detection was successful in 62 out of 77 image sets. Compounded multi-perspective images showed an increase of contrast-to-noise ratios from 0.6 ± 0.1 to 1.2 ± 0.2 over the entire heart cycle in volunteers.Supersonic shear imaging is a non-invasive technique used for detecting physiologic and pathologic changes in biological tissues. In this study, supersonic shear imaging was used to measure and compare shear wave speed (cs) and normalized elastic modulus (EN) values of skin with and skin without dermal striae (DS) in vivo. The values were measured at angles of 0°, 45°, 90° and 315° to the skin tension lines. In the presence of DS, a statistically significant reduction in the elasticity dermis was observed (p value less then 0.05). The mean values of cs and EN for STLs were higher in normal skin at 45° (4.26 ± 1.05 m/s and 56.23 ± 25.31 kPa) and 90° (4.26 ± 0.55 m/s and 54.91 ± 14.22 kPa), and those for DS were also higher at 45° (3.59 ± 0.72 m/s and 42.71 ± 27.97 kPa) and 90° (3.52 ± 0.65 m/s and 42.34 ± 31.68 kPa) than at other angles. Supersonic shear imaging was found to be a promising technique in the study of skin with DS. The data obtained in this study are expected to be relevant for future studies using shear wave elastography for the aforementioned purpose.Wetlands play an important role in reducing the impact of nitrogen pollution on natural aquatic environments. link2 However, during the plant wilting period (winter) there will inevitably be a reduction in nitrogen removal from wetlands. Understanding optimum harvest time will allow the use of management practices to balance the trade-off between nitrogen removal and the sustainability of wetlands. In this study, we investigated wetland nitrogen removal and reed (Phragmites australis) nutrient responses for two years [first year influent total nitrogen (TN) 17.6-34.7 mg L-1; second year influent TN 3.2-10.0 mg L-1] to identify the optimal harvest time before wilting, mid-wilting, or late wilting. Harvesting decreased wetland nitrogen removal in both years, with later harvest time producing a smaller decrease in TN and ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) removal. In addition to harvest before wilting, aboveground reed harvest at mid-wilting harvested more nutrients [carbon (C) 7.9%, nitrogen (N) 46.6% and phosphorus (P) 43.6%] in the first year, while harvest at late wilting harvested more nutrients (C 4.9%, N 7.8% and P 24.1%) in the second year, although this was not statistically significant. The late wilting harvest caused fewer disturbances to root stoichiometric homeostasis in the first year, while mid-wilting harvest promoted root nutrient availability in the second year. link3 In addition, redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that root stoichiometry was interrelated with wetland nitrogen removal. Our results suggest that optimal harvest time was late wilting on the basis of wetland nitrogen removal, or either mid- or late wilting according to reed nutrient response to influent nitrogen concentration in some years. Our results provide crucial information for winter wetlands management. The objectives of this study are (i) to evaluate the space-temporal variability of fire foci by environmental satellites, CHIRPS and remote sensing products based on applied statistics, and (ii) to identify the relational pattern between the distribution of fire foci and the environmental, meteorological, and socioeconomic variables in the mesoregions of Minas Gerais (MG) - Brazil. This study used a time series of fire foci from 1998 to 2015 via BDQueimadas. The temporal record of fire foci was evaluated by Mann-Kendall (MK), Pettitt (P), Shapiro-Wilk (SW), and Bartlett (B) tests. The spatial distribution by burned area (MCD64A1-MODIS) and the Kernel density - (radius 20 km) were estimated. The environmental variables analyzed were rainfall (mm) and maximum temperature (°C), besides proxies to vegetation canopy NDVI, SAVI, and EVI. PCA was applied to explain the interaction between fire foci and demographic, environmental, and geographical variables for MG. The MK test indicated a significant increasing trend in fire foci in MG. The SW and B tests were significant for non-normality and homogeneity of data. The P test pointed to abrupt changes in the 2001 and 2002 cycles (El Niño and La Niña moderated), which contributes to the annual increase and in winter and spring, which is identified by the Kernel density maps. Burned areas highlighted the northern and northwestern regions of MG, Triângulo Mineiro, Jequitinhonha, and South/Southwest MG, in the 3rd quarter (increased 17%) and the 4th quarter (increased 88%). The PCA resulted in three PCs that explained 71.49% of the total variation. The SAVI was the variable that stood out, with 11.12% of the total variation, followed by Belo Horizonte, the most representative in MG. We emphasize that the applied conceptual theoretical model defined here can act in the environmental management of fire risk. However, public policies should follow the technical-scientific guidelines in the mitigation of the resulting socioeconomic - environmental damages.Ponds may hold significant stocks of organic carbon in their sediments and pond creation may offer a practical application for land managers to increase carbon storage. However, ponds are overlooked in global carbon budgets. Their potential significance is suggested by the abundance of ponds throughout terrestrial biomes and their high carbon burial rates, but we lack measures of sediment carbon stocks from typical ponds. We sampled sediment from lowland temperate ponds in north east England comparing carbon stocks from ponds categorised by surrounding land use, or dominant vegetation, or drying regime, along with measures of variation within ponds. Sediment carbon varied considerably between ponds. This variation was more important than any systematic variation between pond types grouped by land use, vegetation or drying, or any variation within an individual pond. Our estimates of pond sediment organic carbon give measures that are higher than from soils in widespread habitats such as temperate grassland and woodland, suggesting that ponds are significant for carbon budgets in their own right.
