Asthma is a common and debilitating chronic airway disease that affects people and horses of all ages worldwide. While asthma in humans most commonly involves an excessive type 2 immune response and eosinophilic inflammation, neutrophils have also been recognized as key players in the pathophysiology of asthma, including in the severe asthma phenotype where neutrophilic inflammation predominates. Severe equine asthma syndrome (sEAS) features prominent neutrophilic inflammation and has been increasingly used as a naturally occurring animal model for the study of human neutrophilic asthma. This comparative review examines the recent literature in order to explore the role of neutrophil inflammatory functions in the pathophysiology and immunology of asthma in humans and horses.Excessive microglial cell activation in the brain can lead to the production of various neurotoxic factors (e.g., pro-inflammatory cytokines, nitric oxide) which can, in turn, initiate neurodegenerative processes. Recent research has been reported that mitochondrial dynamics regulate the inflammatory response of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Isoliquiritigenin (ISL) is a compound found in Glycyrrhizae radix with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In this study, we investigated the function of ISL on the LPS-induced pro-inflammatory response in BV-2 microglial cells. We showed that ISL reduced the LPS-induced increase in pro-inflammatory mediators (e.g., nitric oxide and pro-inflammatory cytokines) via the inhibition of ERK/p38/NF-κB activation and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Furthermore, ISL inhibited the excessive mitochondrial fission induced by LPS, regulating mitochondrial ROS generation and pro-inflammatory response by suppressing the calcium/calcineurin pathway to dephosphorylate Drp1 at the serine 637 residue. Interestingly, the ISL pretreatment reduced the number of apoptotic cells and levels of cleaved caspase3/PARP, compared to LPS-treated cells. Our findings suggested that ISL ameliorated the pro-inflammatory response of microglia by inhibiting dephosphorylation of Drp1 (Ser637)-dependent mitochondrial fission. This study provides the first evidence for the effects of ISL against LPS-induced inflammatory response related and its link to mitochondrial fission and the calcium/calcineurin pathway. University students have been uniquely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is currently little data upon the measures that medical students and newly qualified doctors have taken to help their mental well-being and mood during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We aimed to identify the activities respondents found beneficial for their well-being and mental health and recorded a mood score from survey respondents.

A nationwide study was completed to investigate the mental health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic upon medical students and newly qualified doctors (interim foundation year one). We received 2075 respondents from across the UK.

Physical activity was found to be the most common activity used by the survey respondents to help with their mental well-being (80.1%) (medical students, 83.7%; interim foundation doctors, 72.3%). Participants who stated that exercise helped their well-being had a mean score (SD) of 52.3 (20.7) which was significantly higher (P = 0.048) than those who reported that they did not exercise (49.8 (21.1)). Respondents who stated they had used exercise to help with their mental well-being had (on average) a higher mood score than those who did not. This was seen in both the medical student and interim foundation doctor subgroups.

Exercise can help to benefit the well-being of medical students and interim foundation doctors. It is hoped that higher education providers and employers recognise the importance of promoting physical activity for the well-being of their students and staff, respectively.

We describe an instructive case of breast spiradenoma resembling adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC). A 71-year-old woman underwent excisional biopsy of a breast mass after a conclusive diagnosis was unable to be obtained from core needle biopsy showing an AdCC-like pattern. Histopathologically, the lesion demonstrated solid and cribriform foci comprising basaloid cells, luminal cells, and eosinophilic hyaline material, reminiscent of solid-basaloid AdCC, alongside convoluted lumens, stromal edema, lymphocytic infiltration, and c-kit negativity. On molecular analysis, neither MYB fusion genes nor CYLD gene abnormalities were identified. These results were supportive of spiradenoma. Salivary gland- and skin adnexal-type tumors are challenging to diagnose due to morphological overlaps. This case, highlighting histopathological and molecular features, shows that breast spiradenoma can be a diagnostic pitfall among the differential diagnoses of AdCC.

Malnutrition, whether characterized by not enough or too much nutrient intake, is detrimental to the liver. We herein provide a narrative literature revision relative to hepatic disease occurrence in over or undernourished subjects, to shed light on the paradox where both sides of malnutrition lead to similar liver dysfunction and fat accumulation.

Medline, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were searched for publications up to July 2020. Articles discussing the association between both chronic and acute liver pathology and malnutrition were evaluated together with studies reporting the dietary intake in subjects affected by malnutrition.

The association between overnutrition and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is well recognized, as the beneficial effects of calorie restriction and very low carbohydrate diets. Conversely, the link between undernutrition and liver injury is more complex and less understood. In developing countries, early exposure to nutrient deficiency leads to marasmus and kwashiorkor, accompanied by fatty liver, whereas in developed countries anorexia nervosa is a more common form of undernutrition, associated with liver injury.
