There are few studies exploring the prognostic factors in patients with aquaporin-4 (AQP4)-IgG positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD).

To assess the predictors of outcome in patients with AQP4-antibody positive NMOSD from a United Kingdom (UK) population.

A retrospective study of 52 patients from 2 neuroscience centres in the UK Midlands.

The most common initial presentations were acute myelitis and optic neuritis, with 22/52 cases (42.3%) each. Relapsing course was seen in 32 patients (61.5%) with mean annualised relapse rate of 0.43 (standard deviation 0.45) and a mean interval time to first relapse of 31months (range 2-108). The median Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score at the last follow up was 4 (range 1-9). Cannabis use in pregnancy has been shown to be associated with a past diagnosis of mental health disorders. This study aimed to evaluate the association between serious psychological distress (SPD) and cannabis use in pregnant women in the United States.

Using cross-sectional data from the 2015-2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), we compared likelihood of cannabis use among pregnant women who reported acute, recent or no SPD based on the Kessler K-6 Distress Scale. Weighted analyses were conducted to describe study population and differences in cannabis use patterns in women with SPD compared to those without. Multivariate logistic regression models were fit to determine whether the relationship between SPD and cannabis use differed by acute, recent or no SPD status.

Our final study sample consisted of 2,277,425 pregnant women. In adjusted analyses, pregnant women with any SPD (acute or recent) had 3.1 (95% confidence interval 2.1, 4.5) times the odds of being current cannabis users compared to pregnant women without SPD. Compared to those with no SPD, pregnant women adjusted with acute SPD had 3.9 (2.5, 6.1) the adjusted odds and recent SPD had 2.4 (1.3, 4.4) times the odds of being current cannabis users. Cannabis use rates in each trimester were significantly higher in women with SPD compared to women without.

Chronic exposure to illicit opioid drugs can cause serious health and social problems. However, less is known about the differential effect of various opioid treatments, such as methadone and buprenorphine, on neurocognitive domains such as compulsivity and impulsivity, despite their relevance to the treatment of opioid dependence.

A total of 186 participants were recruited with a cross-sectional design i) illicit heroin users (n = 27), ii) former heroin users stabilized on methadone MMT (n = 48), iii) a buprenorphine maintenance treatment (BMT) group (n = 18), iv) an abstinent (ABS) group with a history of opioid dependence who were previously stabilized on MMT or BMT (n = 29) and v) healthy controls (HC) (n = 64). link2 We used the Intra-Extra Dimensional Shift (IED) and Cambridge Gambling Task (CGT) paradigms for measuring compulsivity and impulsivity constructs respectively.

Heightened compulsivity persisted in the heroin, buprenorphine and abstinent groups. Heroin, methadone and buprenorphine groups exhibited impaired behavioral responses to feedback, consisting of increased deliberation time and poorer risk adjustment. Higher compulsivity measures were negatively associated with opioid dose which may reflect sedation effects.

Our results suggest that compulsivity and impulsivity are core neurocognitive dimensions for opioid dependence which differ in their presentation according to the stage of treatment. Participants taking higher morphine equivalent doses performed better in compulsivity measures. These findings have implications for the treatment of opioid dependence and longitudinal studies are warranted.

However, due to the lack of sufficient toxicological studies in mammals, the potential effects of PSNPs on human health remain largely undefined. Therefore, in this study, young mice aged four weeks old were subjected to oral administration of 0, 0.2, 1, or 10 mg/kg PSNPs for 30 days. Our results demonstrated for the first time that oral exposure to PSNPs affected the expressions of mucus secretion-related genes and altered the community composition of intestinal microbiota, although this treatment did not cause behavioral impairments in young mice. No significant alterations in inflammatory or oxidative stress-related indicators were observed in the liver, lung, intestine, cortex or serum of PSNPs-treated animals. Moreover, exposure to PSNPs did not cause pathological changes in the liver, lung, or cortex tissues. Notably, although oral administration of PSNPs did not produce obvious toxic effects in the major organs of young mice, the possible toxicity of PSNPs remains unresolved and it may depend on the dose, exposure route and species. The potential hazardous effects of PSNPs still need to be systematically assessed, especially for children who are susceptible to exposure to nanoparticles.The primary cause of contagious ecthyma is the orf virus, the parapoxvirus prototype. It is a viral problem observed in goat and sheep flocks in Iran, causing economic loss. Orf is a zoonosis with little epidemiological investigation present in Iran. The current research aims at determining the status of this virus, and a PCR was used as a confirmatory instrument. We sampled 668 goats and sheep and various breeding systems. Besides, the orf prevalence was studied, and vaccination efficacy was determined. Moreover, the potential risk factors surveyed for infection with ecthyma were identified. Samples were taken from goat and sheep flocks in the present cross-sectional research, and PCR was used for testing orf DNA. A checklist including animals' general information was completed. Data were analyzed using univariate tests (chi-square and t-tests) and multivariable binary logistic regression analysis. Three hundred one (45%) goats and sheep detected orf DNA. The age of 70% of positive cases was below one month. Ecthyma infection was significantly higher in imported breeds (87.3%) than indigenous (39.3%). Ninety-six percent of infected goats and sheep in the present work were not vaccinated against ecthyma. The high prevalence of the orf virus was confirmed among goat and sheep flocks in Iran. It is necessary to train ranchers regarding sanitary actions, quarantine, and application of orf vaccination plans.The expansion of urbanization on natural areas is increasing contact between human populations with wild animals. Wild carnivores can act as sentinel hosts or environmental health indicators. Thus, the aim of this work was to investigate the exposure of two major species of wild canids from Southern Brazil to selected pathogens. For that, we live-trapped free-ranging Cerdocyon thous and Lycalopex gymnocercus in five localities and determined the frequency of animals with antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii, Trypanosoma cruzi, Leishmania infantum, Neospora caninum, and Leptospira spp. Among the canids sampled, 23% (12/52) (95%CI 13-36%) had antibodies against T. gondii, with titers ranging from 64 to 512. link3 For T. cruzi, 28% (15/52) (95%CI 18-42%) of sampled canids were seropositive, with titers ranging from 8 to 64. Concerning the protozoan pathogen N. caninum, a total of 5% (3/52) (95%CI 2-15%) of wild canids had antibodies against it. None of the sampled canids showed the presence of antibodies against L. infantum. On the other hand, 44% (23/52) (95%CI 31-57%) of the wild canids showed antibodies against Leptospira spp. The set of results presented here, show that free-ranging neotropical wild canids are exposed and have antibodies against to T. gondii, T. cruzi, Leptospira spp., and to a lesser degree to N. caninum. We found no evidence of L. infantum circulation among the studied populations. These results highlight some of the major pathogens which may represent risks for populations of these wild canids. VL is one of the deadliest tropical infection diseases, yet the coinfection with HIV virus drastically increases relapses, treatment failure and mortality. The concomitant action of these two pathogens leads to high cellular activation independently of the progression to AIDS. In addition, microbial translocation and bacterial infections are thought to contribute worsening the clinical picture. Identifying biomarkers associated with disease severity is of interest for clinical management of patients with VL-HIV/AIDS. Thus, we analyzed in the sera several markers including interleukins (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-17), interferon-γ (IFN- γ), tumor necrosis factor (TNF), lipopolysaccharide (LPS), soluble CD14 (sCD14), macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (IFABP). These markers were compared with disease severity in 24 patients with VL/HIV presenting different clinical outcomes. Disease severity was defined by the probability of death calculated using a score set system derived by the Kala-Cal® software. Probability of death ranged from 3.7% to 97.9%, with median of 28.8%. Five patients died (20%). At the univariate analysis, disease severity was correlated with TNF, IFN-γ and sCD14. LPS was positively correlated with sCD14 specifically in patients with low CD4+ count (CD4+ T-cell less then 200 cells/mL). Most importantly, the multivariate analysis including LPS, CD4+count and sCD14 showed that sCD14 was the only independent predictor for disease severity and death. Altogether, our results indicated that sCD14 is a powerful marker of pathogenicity and death for patients with VL-HIV/AIDS.
