Burgeoning research suggests a link between suicidality (i.e., ideation, attempts) and cannabis use; however, little is known about which demographic groups are at increased risk of co-occurring suicidality and cannabis use disorders (CUD). This study tested differences in suicidality, CUD, and their co-occurrence by gender, age, race/ethnicity, and sexual orientation in a nationally representative U.S.

Five years (2015-2019) of National Survey of Drug Use and Heath surveys were combined. Multinomial logistic regressions tested demographic differences in odds of suicidality only, CUD only, and co-occurring CUD and suicidality, relative to neither suicidality nor CUD. Covariates included survey year, major depressive episode, and other substance use disorders.

Men had higher odds of co-occurring suicidal ideation and CUD than women (AOR=2.06). All older age groups reported lower odds of co-occurring suicidal ideation and CUD and co-occurring suicide attempts and CUD than emerging adults (AORs=0.06-0.39). Black/African American (AOR=1.42) and Native (AOR=2.16) adults reported higher odds of co-occurring suicidal ideation and CUD than White adults. Black/African American (AOR=4.05) and Hispanic/Latinx (AOR=2.49) adults reported higher odds of co-occurring CUD and suicide attempts than White adults. Gay/lesbian (AOR=2.04) and bisexual (AOR=3.16) adults reported higher odds of co-occurring suicidal ideation and CUD than heterosexual adults.

E-cigarette (e-cig) use is widespread and may play an important role in facilitating smoking reduction. Racial/ethnic minorities are less likely than Whites to use e-cigs and suffer disproportionate tobacco-related disease, making them a priority for harm reduction. This paper explores factors associated with smoking reduction among African American (AA) and Latinx smokers enrolled in a trial assessing toxicant exposure in those assigned to e-cigs or smoking as usual.

Participants were randomized to receive 6weeks of JUUL e-cigs or continue smoking cigarettes as usual (N=187). This analysis focuses on 109 participants randomized to e-cigs. We modeled cigarettes smoked in the past week at baseline and week 6 as a function of a priori selected predictors (number of JUUL pods used throughout the study, baseline cigarette dependence, and baseline cotinine) using a Poisson model fit with generalized estimating equations.

Over the six-week study, cigarette smoking decreased from an average of 82.4 to 15.5 cigarettes per week. The COVID-19 pandemic has had considerable behavioral health implications globally. One subgroup that may be of particular concern is U.S. veterans, who are susceptible to mental health and substance use concerns. The current study aimed to investigate changes in alcohol use and binge drinking before and during the first year of the pandemic among U.S. veterans, and how pre-pandemic mental health disorders, namely posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and COVID-19-related factors like loneliness, negative reactions to COVID-19, and economic hardship influenced alcohol use trends.

1230 veterans were recruited in February 2020 as part of a larger survey study on veteran health behaviors. Veterans were asked to complete follow-up assessments throughout the pandemic at 6, 9, and 12- months.

Overall, veterans reported a significant decrease in alcohol use (IRR=0.98) and binge drinking (IRR=0.11) However, women, racial/ethnic minority veterans, and those with pre-existing PTSD exhibited smaller decreases in alcohol use and binge drinking and overall higher rates of use compared to men, White veterans, and those without PTSD. Both economic hardship and negative reactions to COVID-19 were associated with greater alcohol and binge drinking whereas loneliness showed a negative association with alcohol use and binge drinking.

A simple, green, effective and efficient anion exchange pretreatment method was proposed to favor the determination of low-level uranium in natural environmental water samples. To determine the applicability and obtain the optimum operating parameters, the effects of coprecipitation, pH, contact time, uranium concentration, background ions, eluent and the flow speed on the uranium recovery were investigated. The experimental results showed that the proper addition of saturated Na2CO3 solution for pH adjustment did not lead to uranium loss in natural water samples, and the optimum pH value for adsorption was determined from 6 to 8. link2 The adsorption speed was improved a lot with the employment of a novel silica-supported anion exchange resin, which also showed good linear dependence in the concentration range from less then 0.5 μg/L to 1000 μg/L with high tolerance limits towards common background ions. The Kd of Pu for the fine fraction of peat soil with high organic matter content (67%) reached maximum values of 6597 L/kg and 6200 L/kg when tracer solution was applied of pH = 4 and pH = 6, respectively. In comparison, the minimum Kd value of 3.9 L/kg was obtained for the coarse silty sand fraction with the lowest organic matter content of 1.3% at tracer pH = 1.6. The content of Fe in soils was significantly correlated (r = 0.67) with the Kd values of plutonium as well. This is a prospective cohort study including a population-based sample of young adults aged between 18-24 years. The baseline took place from 2007 to 2009, and 1560 subjects were included. Five years after, 1244 individuals were re-evaluated (79.7% retention). Substance abuse/dependence was assessed using the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST), and mental disorders were assessed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview 5.0 (MINI) at both waves. The cumulative incidence of BD in five years was 4.6%. There was no significant association between sociodemographic factors and BD incidence. Tobacco, cannabis, cocaine/crack, other substances abuse/dependence increased the relative risk for BD. Depressive, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorders, and the suicide risk increased the relative risk to BD. Depressive episode was the strongest risk factor for BD, followed by other mental disorders and substance abuse/dependence in a probabilistic community sample of young adults.
