These findings highlight the importance of understanding the dynamics between social participation and health through the lens of "linked lives", especially for married couples.

These findings highlight the importance of understanding the dynamics between social participation and health through the lens of "linked lives", especially for married couples.Sight impairment is experienced by approximately 253 million people worldwide, including people of all generations, at all life course stages. Caught between past and present embodiments of the world, people often express feelings of loss with the onset of sight impairment. This paper examines the role of nonhuman nature encounters as a contingent resource amongst individuals navigating these emotional transitions. It responds to recent calls to attend to the life course in both critical disability studies and the growing body of work linking nonhuman nature relations to human wellbeing. The paper draws on findings from a qualitative study that combined in-depth narrative interviews with in situ go-along interviews to explore how 31 people with sight impairment in England describe and experience a sense of wellbeing (or otherwise) with nature across their everyday lives and life trajectories. The data were analysed using inductive narrative thematic analysis. While nonhuman nature encounters were valued by many participants in promoting a sense of freedom, relatedness, pleasurable sensory immersion, opportunities for exploration and 'skilling up', this paper cautions against generalised or overly Romantic tropes of what nonhuman nature can 'do' through key sight loss junctures, and for whom. It highlights the value of providing timely and sensitive social scaffolding and nurturing creativity to open up meaningful opportunities to engage with nonhuman nature and to counter feelings of loss exacerbated by identity-limiting life course narratives and disability stereotypes. Informed by the stories shared by participants to chart and situate their experiences of sight loss, we call for a new identity politics within and beyond the growing movement to 'connect' people to nonhuman nature for wellbeing; a politics that affirms diverse forms of more-than-human embodiment, recognising how and why such relations may weave into - and indeed out of - people's varied, interdependent life course trajectories.

Wuhan, the epicentre of the coronavirus diseases (COVID-19) outbreak, has been locked down on January 23, 2020. We conducted a study among the lay public in Wuhan to access their support, understanding of, compliance with, and the psychological impacts of the quarantine.

We conducted a cross-sectional, online-based survey study between January 28, 2020, and February 2, 2020 among the adult lay public in Wuhan to access their support, understanding of, compliance with, and the psychological impacts of the quarantine. Multivariable logistic analysis was used to identify factors associated with psychological impacts.

Among the 4100 participants investigated, a total of 15.9% were compliant with all the five household prevention measures, whereas 74.4% were compliant with all the three community prevention measures investigated. By demographics, participants of younger age, higher income, residing in an urban area, knowing neighbors infected with COVID-19 reported significantly higher psychological impact score. Participants with a lower level of support for quarantine were more likely to have a higher psychological impact score (OR=1.45, 95% CI 1.07-1.96). Participants with a lower level of compliance with preventive measures (score of 0-19) reported higher psychological impact (OR=1.40, 95% CI 1.22-1.60 vs. score 20-24). Participants who had been out of house socializing and attended public events expressed higher psychological impact.

Support, understanding of the rationale for quarantine are essential in ensuring appropriate psychological well-being during the quarantine. Improvements in compliance with preventive measures are highly warranted and may bring about a reduction in psychological distress.

Recently, biomimetics of complex natural topologies resulting in such effects has been extensively studied, requiring advanced processing and fabrication techniques. this website Yet, artificial topologies combining structural coloration and hydrophobicity have not been reported. Herein, we present the bottom-up fabrication of short self-assembling peptides as surface covering films, resulting in an easily achievable multilevel morphology of primary structures in a foam-like enclosure, producing structural colors and hydrophobicity. We demonstrate simple techniques allowing controlled coloration of different surfaces while maintaining an >100° water contact angle (WCA). The new artificial topology is much simpler than the natural counterparts and is not limited to a specific peptide, thus allowing the design of modular materials with unparalleled multifunctionalities and potential for further tuning and modifications.Pd-containing catalysts are highly promising in catalytic reactions, and their activity severely dependent on the dispersion extent of Pd nanoparticles (Pd NPs) . However, the regulation of Pd NPs size and dispersion degree are now pretty much the agendas. Here we report a facile solid-state fabrication strategy (SSFS) to promote Pd NPs dispersion in the nano environment of as made mesoporous silica KIT-6 (AK) by taking advantage of three critical factors, namely (i) the confined spaces where Pd precursor locate during fabrication, (ii) the interaction between Pd and supports, and (iii) the 3-dimentional (3D) structure of AK. First, AK presents 3D confined spaces between silica walls and template P123. Second, both silica walls and template P123 in AK offer interaction with Pd precursor. Third, the 3D structure provides more easy access for Pd insertion than linear channels structure without any pore blockage. The characterization results revealed that AK give better dispersion with smaller size of (3.9 nm) Pd than its counterpart (16 nm) prepared from template-free KIT-6 (CK). Moreover, the synthesized catalysts exhibit excellent activity and stability in catalytic conversion of p-nitrophenol (p-NP) and Methylene blue (MB). For a typical PdAK-1.0 catalyst, the complete conversion of P-NP and MB was achieved in less than 10 min with a reaction rate constant (k) of 0.3106 and 0.345 min-1, respectively. It is superior to that on PdCK-1.0 prepared from template free KIT-6 and several reported catalysts. Furthermore, the PdAK-1.0 catalyst presents pretty good stability in catalytic reduction and is apparently better than PdCK-1.0.Biomass-based carbon is gaining increasing attention because it presents a promising prospect for economic growth and social sustainable development. Moreover, it is an excellent medium for application in electromagnetic and electronic devices. Here, puffed-rice-based carbon is obtained at various activating temperatures, and when the hollow bulges on the carbon disappear, the morphology of the carbon changes into sheet-like structures. The R-800 sample displays the highest ID/IG value and demonstrates the best performance when used as both a microwave absorber and an electrode material. The minimum reflection loss (RL) and bandwidth for RL less then -10 dB of the R-800 sample reach -72.1 dB and 13.2 GHz, respectively, and the bandwidth for RL less then -20 dB is as large as 7.0 GHz, illustrating the widest bandwidth among the five carbon specimens. The multiple reflection effects and scattering, good impedance matching, and interfacial polarization synergistically enhance the microwave absorption performances of the sample. At 1 A g-1, the specific capacitance of the R-800 sample reaches 117.2 F g-1 and the capacitance retention remains at 85.3%. Moreover, a hybrid supercapacitor R-800//R-800 demonstrates an outstanding energy density of 15.23 Wh kg-1, power density of 5739.43 W kg-1, and high cycle stability (94.5% after 5000 cycles). This functionalized biomass carbon provides a promising media for constructing a bridge between sustainable development and biomass materials.

The ankle brachial index (ABI) is often used as a proxy for medial arterial calcification (MAC) in studies investigating MAC as a cardiovascular risk factor, but evidence supporting this hypothesis is sparse. This study aims to investigate the use of an elevated ABI as proxy for MAC, as visualized with computed tomography (CT).

Cross-sectional data of 718 participants with, or at risk of cardiovascular disease was used. The ABI was calculated using cutoffs >1.4 and>1.3. The presence of MAC was assessed in the crural and femoral arteries by CT imaging. Modified Poisson regression was used to assess the association between an elevated ABI and the presence of MAC, and test characteristics were calculated.

MAC was found in 25.0% of participants. An ABI >1.4 was found in 8.7% of participants, of whom 45.2% had MAC. An elevated ABI was significantly associated with the presence of MAC (RR 1.74, CI 1.26-2.40). However, poor positive specific agreement (23.3%, CI 13.9-34.3), sensitivity (15.7%, CI 10.4-21.1) and positive predictive value (45.2%, CI 32.8-57.5) were found. Despite good specificity (93.6%, CI 91.6-95.7) the area under the receiving operator curve remained poor (54.7%, CI 51.8-57.6). Negative specific agreement (84.5%, CI 81.4-87.0) and negative predictive value (77.0%, CI 73.7-80.2) were acceptable.

An elevated ABI is insufficient to serve as a true diagnostic proxy for MAC. Studies that have drawn conclusions on the association between MAC and cardiovascular disease, solely based on the ABI, are likely to underestimate the found effects.

However, the risk assessment of cassava consumption has not been reported in China. Therefore, this paper aimed to evaluate the dietary risks of cassava cyanide and proposed a maximum residue limit (MRL) for cyanogenic glycosides (CNGs) in cassava. The retention rate of CNGs and CN- were 61% and 11% after boiling, respectively. The acute dietary exposure of CN- and CNGs were 0.6-fold and 1.7-fold of acute risk reference dose, respectively. There was no chronic health risk across all populations concerning cassava consumption. The MRL of CNGs was proposed as 200 mg/kg in cassava. Risk assessment of cyanide for foods rich in CNGs was suggested to be based on CNGs quantification rather than that of CN-.
