Lateral flow strips give an alternative to gel electrophoresis and permit easy and rapid detection of PCR products. The PCR was performed with 5' 6-FAM and biotin tagged primers specific for Y. pestis, targeting yihN gene located on chromosome. The PCR product was analyzed using lateral flow strips which yielded result within 2-3 minutes. The analytical sensitivity of PCR-lateral flow (PCR-LF) assay was 1 pg genomic DNA of Y. pestis and 500 copies of target DNA sequence harboured in a recombinant plasmid. The assay could detect Y. pestis DNA extracted from spiked human blood samples containing ≥104 CFU per mL of bacteria. The assay was found to be specific and did not cross react with other closely related bacterial species. The developed assay was highly specific, sensitive and also did not require agarose gel electrophoresis for post amplification analysis.Urogenital schistosomiasis is a common experience among children in Zanzibar. There is a paucity of behavioural science-based, health education and behaviour change (HEBC) interventions for school-aged children, those at greatest risk for urogenital schistosomiasis. We assessed the influence of a HEBC intervention, guided by the Health Belief model, among rural schoolchildren on Pemba and Unguja islands in Zanzibar, Tanzania. From 2012 to 2016, a cluster-randomized trial to assess three different interventions against urogenital schistosomiasis was conducted in 90 schools and shehias across Zanzibar. The HEBC intervention was implemented in 15 schools per island. In 2017, at the trial conclusion, we administered written questionnaires to schoolchildren from 4 HEBC intervention schools and 4 not HEBC exposed schools on each island, respectively. Responses were compared between students that were exposed or not exposed to the HEBC intervention using a Fisher's exact test. A total of 1451 students, 708 from inteof urogenital schistosomiasis in Zanzibar, strengthening the possibility for future disease elimination. As the world continues to grapple with the reality of coronavirus disease, global research communities are racing to develop practical solutions to adjust to the new challenges. One such challenge is the control of indoor air quality in the COVID-19 era and beyond. Since COVID-19 became a global pandemic, the "super spread" of the virus has continued to amaze policymakers despite measures put in place by public health officials to sensitize the general public on the need for social distancing, personal hygiene, etc. In this work, we have reviewed the literature to demonstrate, by investigating the historical and present circumstances, that indoor spread of infectious diseases may be assisted by the conditions of the HVAC systems. While little consideration has been given to the possibility of indoor airborne transmission of the virus, the available reports have demonstrated that the virus, with average aerodynamic diameter up to 80-120 nm, is viable as aerosol in indoor atmosphere for more than 3 h, and its spread may be assisted by the HVAC systems. Having reviewed the vulnerability of the conventional ventilation systems, we recommend innovative air circulation concept supported by the use of UVGI in combination with nanoporous air filter to combat the spread of SARS-CoV-2 and other harmful microbes in enclosed spaces.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most common endocrine disruptor compounds in our environment, promoting a xenoestrogenic state. Numerous studies have shown a relationship between exposure to BPA and male infertility problems. Spermatic DNA integrity is a critical factor for the correct transmission of paternal genetic material to the embryo. However, only a very few studies have investigated the association between urinary BPA concentrations and human sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF).

Cross-sectional study conducted with 158 healthy university students (18-23 years), recruited between 2010 and 2011 in the Region of Murcia (Spain). The subjects provided urine and semen samples on a single day. Urinary BPA concentrations were measured by dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry detection, and SDF analysed using the Sperm Chromatin Dispersion test. Statistical analyses were made using linear regression adjusting for potential covariates and confounding factors.

No association was found between urinary BPA concentrations and SDF index in the total group. However, in the subgroup of men with SDF index> 30%, significant positive associations across quartiles (p-trend=0.02) and as a continuous BPA levels were observed (β = 0.055, 95%, CI 0.002; 0.108).

Our results show that, within the subgroup of men with relatively high SDF index, the higher the concentration of BPA the greater the SDF index. Nonetheless, more studies are required to confirm these results and draw conclusions in other male populations.

The underlying mechanisms of lead (Pb) toxicity are not fully understood, which makes challenges to the traditional risk assessment. There is growing use of the mode of action (MOA) for risk assessment by integration of experimental data and system biology. The current study aims to develop a new pathway-based MOA for assessing Pb-induced neurotoxicity.

The available Comparative Toxicogenomic Database (CTD) was used to search genes associated with Pb-induced neurotoxicity followed by developing toxicity pathways using Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA). The spatiotemporal sequence of disturbing toxicity pathways and key events (KEs) were identified by upstream regulator analysis. The MOA framework was constructed by KEs in biological and chronological order.

There were a total of 71 references showing the relationship between lead exposure and neurotoxicity, which contained 2331 genes. IPA analysis showed that the neuroinflammation signaling pathway was the core toxicity pathway in the enriched pathways relevant to Pb-induced neurotoxicity.
