Negative anti-ganglioside antibody results and mild albuminocytological dissociation were noted. The patient was diagnosed with left ANP accompanied by COVID-19 infection. The ANP spontaneously recovered without treatment. ANP can develop during the early phase of COVID-19 infection and adversely affect patients' quality of life.Objective Switching from mepolizumab to benralizumab has been reported to significantly improve both asthma control and the lung function. However, the data on its efficacy in elderly patients with severe eosinophilic asthma are limited. This study aimed to assess whether elderly patients with severe eosinophilic asthma could experience an improved asthma control and lung function when switching directly from mepolizumab to benralizumab. Methods In this single-center, retrospective study conducted between February 2017 and September 2018, we assessed the effect of switching the treatment directly from mepolizumab to benralizumab on eosinophil levels, exacerbation rates, and lung function. We compared the treatment responses between the two groups using either Fisher's exact test or Mann-Whitney U-test, as appropriate. Patients We enrolled 12 elderly patients (age ≥65 years) with severe eosinophilic asthma treated with mepolizumab at Hiroshima Prefectural Hospital (Hiroshima, Japan) during the study period. Six patients were switched from mepolizumab to benralizumab, and six continued with the mepolizumab treatment. Results The switch from mepolizumab to benralizumab caused a near-complete reduction in the eosinophil count (p=0.008). The annual rate of clinically relevant exacerbations and hospitalizations diminished as well, albeit with no statistical significance. We found no improvement in the lung function after switching treatment and no difference in the treatment response between the groups. Conclusion Although this study is based on a small sample of participants, the results indicate that both mepolizumab treatment and switching from mepolizumab to benralizumab treatment without a washout period have clinically relevant asthma control benefits for elderly patients with severe eosinophilic asthma.Objective We investigated the relationship between the amount and frequency of fish intake, and the white blood cell (WBC) count and aerobic exercise habits. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study between April 2019 and March 2020 at the Health Planning Center of Nihon University Hospital on a cohort of 8,981 male subjects. Results The average amount and frequency of fish intake were 134±85 g/week and 2.14±1.28 days/week, respectively. The WBC count decreased significantly as the amount of fish intake increased (p less then 0.0001). According to a multivariate regression analysis, a high fish intake amount (β=-0.082, p less then 0.0001) and regular aerobic exercise (β=-0.083, p less then 0.0001) were independent determinants of a low WBC count. The proportion of subjects engaged in regular aerobic exercise increased with an increase in the amount of fish intake (p less then 0.0001). Furthermore, the amount and frequency of fish intake significantly correlated with the amount of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid intake determined using the Japan's National Nutrition Survey results (both r=0.962 and 0.958). Therefore, the amount of fish intake could be substituted by the average number of days of fish intake per week. Conclusion A high fish intake was an independent determinant of a low WBC count and engagement in regular aerobic exercise, regardless of whether the fish intake was defined by the amount or frequency of fish intake. The circulatory pattern in cranial region was reconstructed based on the micro-CT scans, showing that sea turtle has basically similar pattern with the common snapping turtle stapedial artery supplies orbital region and mandibular artery is ramified from stapedial artery. We also investigate the foramen stapedio-temporalis in turtles using osteological specimens. The foramen stapedio-temporalis, where the stapedial artery passes through, has different size among four families of turtles. We compared the sum of cross sections of left and right foramen stapedio-temporalis since homeostasis of one individual is maintained by a pair of lacrimal glands. The size difference may reflect primarily the share of stapedial artery against palatine artery in cranial circulation pattern and blood supply of orbital regions. Our observations confirmed a significantly larger cross-section in the foramen stapedio-temporalis of sea turtles than other freshwater/terrestrial turtles. Since the circulatory pattern is shared, the size difference of foramen stapedio-temporalis reflects the amount of arterial blood supply to lacrimal glands. Therefore, the size of the foramen stapedio-temporalis may indicate marine adaptation of turtles and are applicable to both fossil and osteological specimens.Microbes live in communities in biological wastewater treatment plants and in the intestines. However, limited information is currently available on the mechanisms by which minority bacterial populations assist other bacteria besides syntrophic relationships as well as on the microbial food web. Therefore, the present study investigated the effects of non-dye-decolorizing Bacillus subtilis strain S4ga at population levels ranging between 0.04 and 4% on the activity of dye-decolorizing Enterococcus faecalis strain T6a1 using a dye decolorization assay. The results obtained revealed that the minority population of B. subtilis S4ga enhanced the dye-decolorizing activity of E. faecalis T6a1, resulting in a shorter lag time and longer active time of dye decolorization. These effects were related to redox potential values rather than O2 concentrations. Comparisons of the extracellular metabolites in individual incubations of E. faecalis T6a1 and B. subtilis S4ga and a co-incubation suggested a mutual relationship through the cross-feeding of specific amino acids (tyrosine, methionine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, valine, and leucine from B. subtilis S4ga to E. faecalis T6a1; glutamine, histidine, aspartic acid, and proline from E. faecalis T6a1 to B. subtilis S4ga). High-power laser shots administered at the border of the optic disc (OD)-injured fibers resulted in large scotomas. These lesions produced a devastating effect on fibers in this passage, resulting in large deafferentation of the dLGN. The time course of plasticity expressed in this nucleus varied with the degree of the retinal lesion. Topographically, corresponding portions of the dLGN were inferred by the extent of the ocular dominance column revealed by cytochrome oxidase histochemistry in flattened preparations of V1. In the region representing the retinal lesion, the expression of GFAP, GAP43, Pv, and Cb increased and decreased in the corresponding dLGN layers shortly after lesion induction and returned to their original values with different time courses.
