We assumed a BTB prevalence of 40%. In year ten, the Net present value (NPV) of livestock production in terms of milk, meat and hides was estimated at 154.5 million USD for model 1 and 1.7 billion USD for model 2. Loss of NPV over 10 years was estimated at 12 million USD for model 1 and 131.7 million USD for model 2, representing roughly 7.3% loss in NPV or 219 USD per animal. This is a benchmark against which a national TB control program could be developed in the future to calculate its benefit/cost ratio.Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease of domesticated and wild ruminants and pigs that causes enormous economic losses through morbidity, mortality, and trade restrictions. Although the disease is endemic in Pakistan, seasonal outbreaks occur every year throughout the country. This study aimed to investigate FMD outbreaks and to identify the risk factors associated with FMD outbreaks between January and April 2019 in the Punjab province. We performed outbreak investigations (n = 64) for FMD in nine districts of the Punjab province through Divisional Disease Diagnostic Laboratories, Livestock and Dairy Development Department Punjab. Subsequently, we conducted a case-control study including 128 livestock farms (case to control ratio = 1). The data on various plausibly associated factors were collected using a structured questionnaire from each farm. The FMD outbreaks started during the month of January, culminated in February (n = 36, 56.25%) and stopped during the month of April 2019. The most common serotype was O (45.83%), followed by Asia1 (29.17%) and A (13.89%); however, some case farms had mixed infection with serotypes A and O (9.72%) and serotypes O and Asia1 (1.39%). Multivariable analysis revealed that the history of introducing a new animal with unknown FMD vaccination status in the herd (OR =11.51, 95% CI = 3.28 - 40.47), not practicing regular vaccination against FMD (OR = 20.81, 95% CI = 4.59 - 94.35), history of the visit of an animal broker (OR = 9.06, 95% CI = 2.31 - 35.61), distance of the farm to a nearby livestock farm (OR = 6.13, 95% CI = 1.39 - 27.01) and large herd size (OR = 20.79, 95% CI = 2.45 - 176.27) were significantly associated with the occurrence of FMD outbreaks in Punjab province during 2019. In conclusion, improving biosecurity measures, avoiding the introduction of animals without FMD vaccination history and regular vaccination against FMD can significantly reduce the occurrence of the disease on livestock farms in Pakistan.Outcomes of treating low-grade epilepsy-associated tumors (LEATs) in the temporal lobe with MRI-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (MRgLITT) remain poorly characterized. This study aimed to compare the safety and effectiveness of treating temporal lobe LEATs with MRgLITT versus open resection in a consecutive single-institution series. We reviewed all adult patients with epilepsy that underwent surgery for temporal lobe LEATs at our institution between 2002 and 2019, during which time we switched from open surgery to MRgLITT. Surgical outcome was categorized by Engel classification at >12mo follow-up and Kaplan-Meir analysis of seizure freedom. We recorded hospital length of stay, adverse events, and available neuropsychological results. Of 14 total patients, 7 underwent 9 open resections, 6 patients underwent MRgLITT alone, and 1 patient underwent an open resection followed by MRgLITT. Baseline group demographics differed and were notable for preoperative duration of epilepsy of 9.0 years (range 1-36) for open resection versus 14.0 years (range 2-34) for MRgLITT. Median length of stay was one day shorter for MRgLITT compared to open resection (p= less then .0001). There were no major adverse events in the series, but there were fewer minor adverse events following MRgLITT. At 12mo follow-up, 50% (5/10) of patients undergoing open resection and 57% (4/7) of patients undergoing MRgLITT were free of disabling seizures (Engel I). When comparing patients who underwent similar procedures in the dominant temporal lobe, patients undergoing MRgLITT had fewer and milder material-specific neuropsychological declines than patients undergoing open resections. In this small series, MRgLITT was comparably safe and effective relative to open resection of temporal lobe LEATs.Targeted tumor therapies of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTK) do not work for every patient with cancer, owing to differences in the level of RTK heterogeneity, RTK co-activation mechanisms, and other aspects of disease biology. Over the last years, the combination of non-invasive positron emission tomography (PET) with non-pharmacological doses of an RTK-specific antibody has shown the ability to study cancer biology in real-time and in the whole body of living subjects at the early stages of the disease and in response to therapies. Many RTK-specific antibody-PET imaging conjugates exist in the clinics and show potential for earlier diagnosis and accurate management of oncology patients. Herein, our review concisely focuses on clinical and preclinical data of RTK-targeted PET imaging to detect two significant biological mechanisms of tumor resistance - RTK heterogeneity and RTK co-activation. This mini-review provides an overview of RTK-targeted PET imaging studies of the last 4 years and gives collective information on how it may assist prognostic information and image disease recurrence.

Childhood absence epilepsy (CAE) is associated with functional changes in specific brain regions and connections. However, little is known about the topological properties of the functional brain connectome in drug naive CAE.

We adopted the resting-state EEG-fMRI and graph theoretic approach to investigate both local and global brain functional network properties of drug naive CAE during interictal resting state compared with healthy control. In addition, we computed the partial correlation coefficient to estimate the correlation between the functional network metrics and the measured disease duration or the age at seizure onset.

The functional connectome in drug naive CAE showed decreased small-worldness and normalized clustering coefficient at the global level. At the nodal level, decreased nodal centralities were mainly in bilateral prefrontal-thalamocortical circuit and increased nodal centralities mainly in left hippocampus and right middle temporal gyrus (p<0.05). In addition, the duration of the epilepsy was significantly correlated with the nodal efficiency in left middle frontal gyrus (r=-0.627, p=0.012).

For macro-litter items, a mean concentration of 1.9 ± 2.4 items/m2 weighing a total of 13 kg was quantified. In terms of beach composition, cobble beaches with deposited seagrass had almost twice as much marine litter as other beaches. For beach micro-litter items, white and transparent microplastics within the size class of 1-2 mm were the most abundant on all the beaches, and the most common polymer types were polyethylene (64%) and polypropylene (17.2%). Overall, for both macro- and micro-litter items, plastic was the most dominant material (90%) identified on all beaches surveyed within Cabrera MPA, indicating areas of low anthropogenic pressures are increasingly becoming sinks for marine litter.Longlining is a widely used fishing method. During longline fishing, some of the snoods connecting the hooks to the mainline are often lost at sea. Since snoods are made of nylon or polyester, lost snoods contribute to marine plastic pollution. Replacing nylon or polyester with a new material made of biodegradable plastics can potentially reduce macro- and microplastic pollution that is caused by lost snoods. In this study, we estimated the risk for snood loss in a longline fishery targeting haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus (Linnaeus, 1758)) and Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua (Linnaeus, 1758)) in Barents Sea. Further, we compared catch efficiency in this fishery for snoods made of biodegradable and nylon materials. No significant differences were found between the two materials. Therefore, catch efficiency does not represent a barrier for using biodegradable materials in snoods.Seasonal sediment samples were collected along the Giresun coastline of southeastern Black Sea and analyzed to detect the levels of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The PAH levels, ranging from 28.47 to 444.36 ng g-1 with the mean of 102.57 ng g-1 remained lower than those detected in most of the other sediment studies conducted worldwide. Using long-term historical HAB observation data and satellite-derived sea surface temperatures (SSTs), we found that the annual number of HAB events was positively correlated with the mean March SST and negatively correlated with the SST change rate from March to July in nearshore waters ( less then 50 m). A simple method of HAB risk assessment was therefore proposed based on either March SST (threshold 13 °C) or SST change rate (threshold 3.6 °C/month). Validation against a k-means classification scheme indicated that the overall accuracy based on the March SST threshold was 85%, with a kappa coefficient of 0.69. The SST-based method facilitates the assessment of HAB risk in the ECS 1-2 months in advance, thus helping to reduce the damage caused by HABs.Plastic debris degrades in the water environments due to various factors such as mechanical stress. Small-sized degradation products, including plastic monomers, are currently monitored using equipment which might be unsuitable for screening. Here, we developed a recombinant whole-cell bacterial biosensor, which could be used for this type of monitoring. The Escherichia coli pBAV1K-ACU-lucFF cells contain a luciferase-based reporter system under the control of acrylic acid specific promoter. The biosensor cells were used to detect acrylic acid monomers from both sterile water and spiked lake water samples, indicating usability with environmental samples. Furthermore, poly(acrylic acid) was incubated in salt water, and the biosensor cells could identify acrylic acid monomers originating from it. Thus, the cells could be used to observe similar processes in the environment. The results show that the bacterial biosensors could complement the current research methods of plastic monomer monitoring in water environments with a potential for higher throughputs.
