Thirty-two male Wistar rats [4 wk old, (mean ± SEM) 135± 32g body weight] were fed a low-protein (LP; 6% energy value) or normal-protein (NP; 20%) diet for 8 wk. Food intake and body mass were measured during the entire intervention. During self-selection sessions after 4 wk of experimental diets, we evaluated rat food preference between LP, NP, or high-protein (HP; 55%) pellets. At the end of the experiment, we assessed their hedonic response [ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs)] and c-Fos neuronal activation in the olfactory tubercle and nucleus accumbens (NAcc) associated with an LP or HP meal.

Identification of nutrients of public health concern has been a hallmark of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA); however, a formal systematic process for identifying them has not been published.

We aimed to propose a framework for identifying "nutrients or food components" (NFCs) of public health relevance to inform the DGA.

The proposed framework consists of 1) defining terminology; 2) establishing quantitative thresholds to identify NFCs; and 3) examining national data. The proposed framework utilizes available data from 3 key data sources or "prongs" 1) dietary intakes; 2) biological endpoints; and 3) clinical health consequences such as prevalence of health conditions, directly or indirectly through validated surrogate markers.

To better understand this phenomenon, we used mutagenesis, thermal melting, and global analysis to determine stability, kinetic, and cooperativity parameters for GQ folding within chains containing 8-12 TTAGGG repeats. We then used these parameters to simulate the folding of 32-repeat chains, more representative of intact telomeres. We found that a combination of folding frustration and negative cooperativity between adjacent GQs increases TTAGGG unfolding by up to 40-fold, providing an abundance of unfolded gaps that are potential binding sites for telomeric proteins. This effect was most pronounced at the chain termini, which could promote telomere extension by telomerase. We conclude that folding frustration is an important and largely overlooked factor controlling the structure of telomeric DNA.

Anemia is a worldwide concern. Nutritional deficiencies and inflammation are considered main contributors, but zinc deficiency has only recently been associated with anemia.

In this study we assessed associations between zinc status and hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations and anemia in preschool children 6-59 mo old (PSC) and nonpregnant women of reproductive age 15-49 y old (WRA) in population-based nutrition surveys.

Cross-sectional data from 13 (PSC) and 12 (WRA) countries within the Biomarkers Reflecting Inflammation and Nutritional Determinants of Anemia (BRINDA) project were used. Multivariable linear models were constructed that included zinc status (plasma/serum zinc concentrations), Hb concentrations and anemia, iron status, age, sex, and inflammation (C-reactive protein and α-1-acid glycoprotein). Zinc was adjusted for inflammation in PSC according to the BRINDA algorithm.

Data were available for 18,658 PSC and 22,633 WRA. Prevalence of anemia ranged from 7.5% to 73.7% and from 11.5% to 94.7% in eity among countries is warranted.

Zinc deficiency was prevalent in most countries and associations between zinc and Hb in roughly half of the countries examined suggesting that strategies to combat zinc deficiency may help reduce anemia prevalence. More research on mechanisms by which zinc deficiency is associated with anemia and the reasons for the heterogeneity among countries is warranted.

Women's intrahousehold bargaining power is an important determinant of child nutrition in Nepal, but a better understanding is needed on how men's bargaining power is related to child nutrition.

We examined the relation of women's and men's household bargaining power with child height-for-age z score (HAZ).

We analyzed cross-sectional data from 2012, collected as an impact evaluation baseline of the Suaahara 1 program. A subsample of households with data on women's and men's intrahousehold bargaining power (n=2170) with children aged 0-59 mo across Nepal was considered for this analysis. Intrahousehold bargaining power consisted of 4 domains 1) ownership and control of assets, 2) social participation, 3) time allocation to work activities (workload), and 4) household decision-making control. Using multilevel methods, we analyzed associations between HAZ and 1) women's bargaining power, 2) men's bargaining power, and 3) women's and men's bargaining power, adjusted for individual- and household-level confounding factors and clustering.
