AIMS To isolate and characterize a native strain of Trichothecium roseum infecting the immatures of Pauropsylla buxtoni on fig leaves, to study the morphological features of the isolated strain, then to test the entomopathogenic effect of the isolated strain against the immatures of P. buxtoni on fig leaves. METHODS AND RESULTS The isolated strain of T. roseum produced pink mycelial growth on culture medium with septate mycelium and conidiophores. It also produced two-celled conidia with elliptical to pyriform shape born at the tip of conidiophores. Molecular characterization of the isolated strain confirmed the identity of the strain as T. VE-821 in vitro roseum. In bioassays, application of conidial suspension of the isolated strain against the 4th instar of P. buxtoni immatures infesting fig leaves showed an obvious entomopathogenic effect of the applied fungus strain against the targeted insect. This effect was exhibited by the death of treated P. buxtoni immatures with the fungus. The dead insects were characterized by the presence of pinkish mycelial growth on the outer surface which is characteristic to the fungus, in addition to the positive isolation of the fungus from internal tissues of treated insects after a proper external disinfection. Moreover, significant differences (at P  less then  0·018) were obtained between the means of mortality % of P. buxtoni immatures treated with different concentrations of conidial suspension of the fungus. CONCLUSIONS The overall results confirm the entomopathogenic effect of T. roseum against P. buxtoni immatures infesting fig leaves. Significant mortalities of P. buxtoni immatures were obtained when the different concentrations of the fungus conidial suspension were bio-assessed against the insect. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The tested strain of T. roseum can be applied as biocontrol agent of P. buxtoni on fig leaves within an integrated control programme to reduce the impact of pest on fig trees. © 2020 The Society for Applied Microbiology.AIM To explore recent research on care coordination interventions for people living with multimorbidity, from the perspective of the person receiving care. BACKGROUND Care coordination interventions for people living with multimorbidity show some effectiveness in improving management of their health and reducing potentially preventable hospitalisations. The experience of people enrolled in care coordination interventions requires further exploration. DESIGN State-of-the-art review. METHODS A review was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist where five databases (The Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, Scopus, CINAHL and MEDLINE) were searched for qualitative sources published from January 2008-March 2019. Two additional databases focused on multimorbidity and integrated care were included in the search. Titles, abstracts and full texts were screened using inclusion criteria. Reference lists of the included articles were hand-searched. Summary tables were de. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.AIM AND OBJECTIVE To explore nurses' perceptions of factors that help or hinder intra-hospital handover. BACKGROUND Miscommunication during clinical handover is a leading cause of clinical incidents in hospitals. Intra-hospital nursing handover between the emergency department and inpatient unit is particularly complex. DESIGN A descriptive, qualitative study. This research adheres to the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research. METHODS Forty-nine nurses participated in group interviews, which were analysed using inductive content analysis. RESULTS Three categories emerged (a) "lacking clear responsibilities for who provides handover"; (b) "strategies to ensure continuity of information"; and (c) "strained relationships during handover." CONCLUSIONS Intra-hospital handover requires clear processes, to promote high-quality information sharing. Ensuring these processes are broad and acceptable across units may ensure nurses' needs are met. Relational continuity between nurses is an important consideration when improving intra-hospital handover. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Nursing managers are optimally positioned to enhance intra-hospital handover, by liaising and enforcing standardisation of processes across units. Nurse managers could promote intra-unit activities that foster front-line nurses' communication with each other, to encourage problem-solving and partnerships. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.RATIONALE Paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) was used to analyze and quantify ampicillin, a hydrophilic compound and frequently utilized antibiotic. Hydrophilic molecules are difficult to analyze via PS-MS due to their strong binding affinity to paper substrates and low ionization efficiency, among other reasons. METHODS Solvent and paper parameters were optimized to increase the extraction of ampicillin from the paper substrate. After optimizing these key parameters, a Resolution IV 1/16 fractional factorial design with two center points was employed to screen eight different design parameters simultaneously. RESULTS Pore size, sample volume, and solvent volume were the most significant factors affecting average peak area under the curve (AUC) and the signal-to-blank (S/B) ratio for the 1 μg/mL ampicillin calibrant. After optimizing the key parameters, a linear calibration curve with a range of 0.2 μg/mL to 100 μg/mL was generated (R2  = 0.98) and the limit of detection (LOD) and lower limit of quantification (LLOQ) were calculated to be 0.07 μg/mL and 0.25 μg/mL, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The statistical optimization procedure undertaken here increased the mass spectral signal intensity by more than a factor of 40. This statistical method of screening followed by optimization experiments proved faster and more efficient, and produced more drastic improvements than typical one-factor-at-a-time experiments. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.OBJECTIVE We investigated the effect of stoma status (permanent stoma, temporary stoma, or non-stoma) on psychological distress and quality of life (QOL) in Chinese patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) in the early postoperative stage. We also investigated whether body image mediated the association between stoma status and psychological distress and QOL. METHODS A convenience sample of 282 CRC patients 1 to 2 weeks postsurgery participated in an observational, cross-sectional study. Participants completed the following self-report measures Body Image Scale, Distress Thermometer, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and Core Quality of Life Questionnaire. RESULTS The temporary stoma group (TS) and the permanent stoma group (PS) reported worse body image and higher levels of anxiety and depression than the non-stoma group (P  less then  .05). PS reported worse body image than TS (P  less then  .01). Depression and significant body image problems were more prevalent in PS than in TS (P  less then  .05). Stoma status was the strongest factor associated with body image, distress, and depression (P  less then  .
