The widespread impacts of malaria in the tropical regions of the developing world are not only on healthcare issues but also an agricultural output. Malaria causes manpower loss when it strikes farmers at critical planting, weeding, and harvesting times. Given the above, the expected outcome to malaria prevention programs in farming communities remains a far cry, especially where the predisposing factors are not properly identified and long-lasting solutions proffered. Consequently, this study was designed to assess the malaria predisposing factors among the crop production farmers attending the Ndop District Hospital. The microscopy method was used to determine the presence of malaria parasitaemia. The following categorical variables were considered predisposing factors Sex, history on malaria illness/treatment, use of long-lasting insecticide nets (LLINs) and knowledge on malaria transmission/prevention. A four-point Likert-type rating scale was adopted for the scoring of the responses given on the predisposing factors, while Fisher's exact test was used to assess the associations between malaria and each of the predisposing factors. The prevalence of malaria parasitaemia among the crop production farmers was 20% (143/715). The predisposing factors tested were found to be significantly associated to the occurrence of malaria among the crop production farmers. Therefore, the combination of improved existing and innovative malaria control strategies may possibly ensure sustained malaria decrease among the farmers in the Ndop Health District.To improve the understanding of the middle-ear hearing mechanism and assist in the diagnosis of middle-ear diseases, we are developing a high-speed digital holographic (HDH) system to measure the shape and acoustically-induced transient displacements of the tympanic membrane (TM). In this paper, we performed measurements on cadaveric human ears with simulated common middle-ear pathologies. The frequency response function (FRF) of the normalized displacement by the stimulus (sound pressure) at each measured pixel point of the entire TM surface was calculated and the complex modal indicator function (CMIF) of the middle-ear system based on FRFs of the entire TM surface motions was used to differentiate different middle-ear pathologies. We also observed changes in the TM shape and the surface motion pattern before and after various middle-ear manipulations. The observations of distinguishable TM shapes and motion patterns in both time and frequency domains between normal and experimentally simulated pathological ears support the development of a quantitative clinical holography-based apparatus for diagnosing middle-ear pathologies.Scientific evidence spanning experimental and epidemiologic studies has shown that air pollution exposures can lead to a range of health effects. Quantitative approaches that allow for the estimation of the adverse health impacts attributed to air pollution enable researchers and policy analysts to convey the public health impact of poor air quality. Multiple tools are currently available to conduct such analyses, which includes software packages designed by the World Health Organization (WHO) AirQ+, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) Environmental Benefits Mapping and Analysis Program - Community Edition (BenMAP - CE), to quantify the number and economic value of air pollution-attributable premature deaths and illnesses. WHO's AirQ+ and U.S. EPA's BenMAP - CE are among the most popular tools to quantify these effects as reflected by the hundreds of peer-reviewed publications and technical reports over the past two decades that have employed these tools spanning many countries and multiple continents. Within this paper we conduct an analysis using common input parameters to compare AirQ+ and BenMAP - CE and show that the two software packages well align in the calculation of health impacts. Indeed, it has become clear that the significant reduction in tobacco consumption would result in the prevention of a large fraction of lung cancer cases and other smoking-related diseases. Women Against Lung Cancer in Europe (WALCE) is a non-profit European organisation with more than 10 years of experience, whose mission is promoting communication strategies and awareness initiatives, customized on recipients age, to aware public opinion and decision makers on damages of smoking on health and spreading accurate and updated information in order to support people affected by lung cancer and their caregivers. In this review we will provide a summary of WALCE commitment and experience in the field of smoking cessation and lung cancer prevention.Smoking increases mortality from all causes and has a crucial role in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Active smoking and secondhand smoke exposure determine more than 30% of coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality. The exact mechanisms of cardiovascular damages are not well known, but the detrimental effect of smoking on endothelial function has long been recognized. Smoking elicits oxidative processes, negatively affects platelet function, fibrinolysis, inflammation and vasomotor function; all these proatherogenic effects double the 10-year risk of fatal events in smokers compared to non smokers. An intriguing issue about smoking is the vulnerability of female gender. The mortality from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) is higher in female than male smokers and female smokers show a 25% higher risk of developing CHD than men with the same exposure to tobacco smoke. This female vulnerability seems to be related to genes involved in thrombin signaling. The effects of smoking cessation have also been extensively studied. Cessation at an early age (40 years) has an impressive 90% reduction in the excess risk of death. In this review we report recent data about the causal link between smoking and CVDs and about the benefits of smoking cessation.In recent years, the marketing of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) has changed the attitudes of people towards tobacco products. In addition, ENDS are becoming very popular among youth. Since a high percentage of young people use these delivery systems as the first products containing nicotine, the acute and chronic exposure to ENDS emissions and nicotine-induced effects on the adolescent's brain deserve a special attention. Given the extremely varied types of ENDS and the heterogeneous concentrations of substances emitted by specific devices, an overall risk assessment is particularly difficult. Here we critically review the evidence on the safety profile of ENDS, we also discuss the global policies with the leading role of the World Health Organization (WHO), which provides updated information and indications that must guide community and individual choices.This article investigates the effects of tobacco control policies on smoking initiation, cessation and prevalence by examining the papers published in the last 5 years. Twenty-one articles have been selected by two authors and sorted by four types of tobacco control tobacco prices, anti-smoking campaigns for young people, mass media intervention and public smoking bans. Price/tax increase has deterrent effect on smoking initiation but does not promote smoking cessation; intervention on young people could reduce the smoking initiation if carried out at an early age and if acted on social skills and with peer-led approach, as opposed to restraining measures which hare generally easily circumvented by young people. Since tissue samples are not always available, liquid biopsy may represent a viable option for KRAS testing. Here, we review the last three years clinical practice performed on 194 plasma based liquid biopsies by next generation sequencing (NGS) SiRe® panel. In particular, 36 (18.6%) KRAS mutated cases were identified, with an overall median allelic frequency of 5.0% (ranging between 0.2% and 46.8%). No concomitant mutations were observed in the other NSCLC clinical relevant genes included in the SiRe® panel, such as epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and v-Raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B (BRAF). Exon 2 p.G12C was the most common detected mutation (13/36, 36.1%). In conclusion, our data update and confirm that SiRe® NGS panel represents a robust analytical tool to assess KRAS mutational status on circulating tumor DNA. Nowadays, liquid biopsy has emerged as a minimally-invasive tool to address the urgent need for real time monitoring, stratification, and personalized treatment of malignancies, including lung cancer. Liquid biopsy refers to a class of biomarkers, including circulating tumor cells (CTCs), cell-free circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and tumor-derived extracellular vesicles (tdEV). Since CTCs represent a crucial step in disease progression and metastasis, we reviewed here the scientific literature about the use of CTCs in early diagnosis of lung cancer; different techniques, and different strategies (e.g., source of analysis sample or high-risk groups of patients) were discussed showing the potential of implementing liquid biopsy in the clinical routine of non-metastatic lung cancer.Poor survival of lung cancer (LC) patients depends on several factors first of all the delay in the diagnosis, considering that the majority of patients have an advanced-stage disease at the time of diagnosis. In this context, use of screening to increase the percentage of early LC detection can play a crucial role. After the preliminary unsatisfactory experiences with chest X-rays and sputum cytology, low dose computed tomography (LDCT) has become the best method for LC screening. In particular, several randomized LDCT screening trials conducted in the last year showed significant reductions in LC mortality in high-risk subjects. This review focuses on both recent advances in LC screening and some open questions.
