However, bacterial infections (especially those caused by Vibrio and Photobacterium species) are among the main limiting factors for the intensification of marine fish aquaculture, particularly during early development stages. Therefore, the use of phages, which are natural killers of bacteria, represents a promising strategy to reduce the mortality of farmed organisms caused by pathogenic bacteria. Our hypothesis suggests an improvement in carcass and meat quality of pasture-finished animals by introducing concentrate feed into diets. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different levels of protein-energy supplementation on carcass and meat characteristics of Texel lambs raised on Brachiaria pastures, and compare the results with those obtained from confined animals. Thirty 2-month-old intact lambs were divided into five treatments pasture with mineral supplementation, pasture containing daily supplies of 0.8, 1.6, and 2.4% BW protein-energy supplementation, and confinement (reference treatment). All animals were slaughtered 104 days after the beginning of the experiment. Lambs submitted to 1.6% and 2.4% BW supplementation presented similar characteristics to animals kept in confinement and were superior to animals treated with 0 or 0.8% of BW supplementation levels (p less then .05). Increases of subcutaneous fat thickness were verified for 0.0, 0.8, 1.6, 2.4% BW, and confinement treatments, being respectively of 0.25, 0.74, 1.61, 1.69, and 1.98. this website Conversely, treatments had no influence on meat physical-chemical characteristics, being all considered moderately soft, juicy (tender), and with mild tastes and odors. Lambs raised on Brachiaria pastures have high-quality meat, but more protein-energy supplementation is needed to be an alternative for the feedlots for young animals.Ultrafast interlayer charge transfer is one of the most distinct features of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures. Its dynamics competes with carrier thermalization such that the energy of nonthermalized photocarriers may be harnessed by band engineering. In this study, nonthermalized photocarrier energy is harnessed to achieve near-infrared (NIR) to visible light upconversion in a metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) vdW heterostructure tunnel diode consisting of few-layer graphene (FLG), hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), and monolayer tungsten disulfide (WS2 ). Photoexcitation of the electrically biased heterostructure with 1.58 eV NIR laser in the linear absorption regime generates emission from the ground exciton state of WS2 , which corresponds to upconversion by ≈370 meV. The upconversion is realized by electrically assisted interlayer transfer of nonthermalized photoexcited holes from FLG to WS2 , followed by formation and radiative recombination of excitons in WS2 . The photocarrier transfer rate can be described by Fowler-Nordheim tunneling mechanism and is electrically tunable by two orders of magnitude by tuning voltage bias applied to the device. This study highlights the prospects for realizing novel electro-optic upconversion devices by exploiting electrically tunable nonthermalized photocarrier relaxation dynamics in vdW heterostructures.Percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) has been increasingly used in patients with atrial fibrillation who are poor candidates for long-term oral anticoagulation. The presence of a left atrial appendage (LAA) thrombus is a contraindication for percutaneous LAAC. Despite oral anticoagulation, persistent thrombus is not uncommon. We describe the use of transcatheter cerebral embolic protection with the Sentinel cerebral protection system during LAAC using WATCHMAN in two atrial fibrillation patients who had persistent LAA thrombus despite oral anticoagulation.Given the potential health benefits (and adverse effects), of polyphenolic and steroidal glycoalkaloids in the diet there is a growing interest in fully elucidating the genetic control of their levels in foodstuffs. Here we carried out profiling of the specialized metabolites in the seeds of the Solanum pennellii introgression lines identifying 338 putative metabolite quantitative trait loci (mQTL) for flavonoids, steroidal glycoalkaloids and further specialized metabolites. Two putative mQTL for flavonols and one for steroidal glycoalkaloids were cross-validated by evaluation of the metabolite content of recombinants harboring smaller introgression in the corresponding QTL interval or by analysis of lines from an independently derived backcrossed inbred line population. The steroidal glycoalkaloid mQTL was localized to a chromosomal region spanning 14 genes including a previously defined steroidal glycoalkaloid gene cluster. The flavonoid mQTL was further validated via the use of transient and stable overexpression of the Solyc12g098600 and Solyc12g096870 genes which encode seed specific UDP-glycosyltransferases (UGTs). The results are discussed in the context of our understanding of the accumulation of polyphenols and steroidal glycoalkaloids and how this knowledge may be incorporated into breeding strategies aimed at improving nutritional aspects of plants as well as in fortifying them against abiotic stress. Background Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is an important therapeutic strategy for several hematologic diseases. In the absence of a matched related donor, allogeneic HSCT has been associated with increased risk of infectious complications. Here, we present the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of early infectious complications in children undergoing HSCT from Southern Brazil. Methods This is a retrospective unicentric cohort study of infections in all children receiving their first HSCT during the period between 2010 and 2017. Results Data from 292 patients were analyzed; bone marrow failures (52.7%) comprised most of the baseline diagnosis. Bone marrow (BM) was the stem cell source in 254 (87%), followed by cord blood (CB) in 34 (11.6%) children. The use of alternative donors (77.8%) and presence of acute graft-vs-host disease (GVHD) (23.6%) were associated with an increased risk of viral and fungal infection. Bacterial infection was observed in 79 patients (27%); 220 patients (75.
