Online food delivery services like Just Eat and Grubhub facilitate online ordering and home delivery of food prepared away-from-home. It is poorly understood how these services are used and by whom. This study investigated the prevalence of online food delivery service use and sociodemographic characteristics of customers, in and across Australia, Canada, Mexico, the UK, and the USA. We analyzed online survey data (n = 19,378) from the International Food Policy Study, conducted in 2018. We identified respondents who reported any online food delivery service use in the past 7 days and calculated the frequency of use and number of meals ordered. We investigated whether odds of any online food delivery service use in the past 7 days differed by sociodemographic characteristics using adjusted logistic regression. Nesuparib Overall, 15% of respondents (n = 2929) reported online food delivery service use, with the greatest prevalence amongst respondents in Mexico (n = 839 (26%)). Online food delivery services had most frequently been used once and the median number of meals purchased through this mode of order was two. Odds of any online food delivery service use were lower per additional year of age (OR 0.95; 95% CI 0.94, 0.95) and greater for respondents who were male (OR 1.50; 95% CI 1.35, 1.66), that identified with an ethnic minority (OR 1.57; 95% CI 1.38, 1.78), were highly educated (OR 1.66; 95% CI 1.46, 1.90), or living with children (OR 2.71; 95% CI 2.44, 3.01). Further research is required to explore how online food delivery services may influence diet and health.Iron is part of many redox and other enzymes and, thus, it is essential for all living beings. Many oxic environments have extremely low concentrations of free iron. Therefore, many prokaryotic species evolved siderophores, i.e., small organic molecules that complex Fe3+ with very high affinity. Siderophores of bacteria are intensely studied, in contrast to those of archaea. The haloarchaeon Haloferax volcanii contains a gene cluster that putatively encodes siderophore biosynthesis genes, including four iron uptake chelate (iuc) genes. Underscoring this hypothesis, Northern blot analyses revealed that a hexacistronic transcript is generated that is highly induced under iron starvation. A quadruple iuc deletion mutant was generated, which had a growth defect solely at very low concentrations of Fe3+, not Fe2+. Two experimental approaches showed that the wild type produced and exported an Fe3+-specific siderophore under low iron concentrations, in contrast to the iuc deletion mutant. Bioinformatic analyses revealed that haloarchaea obtained the gene cluster by lateral transfer from bacteria and enabled the prediction of enzymatic functions of all six gene products. Notably, a biosynthetic pathway is proposed that starts with aspartic acid, uses several group donors and citrate, and leads to the hydroxamate siderophore Schizokinen.Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILDs) are a large family of disorders characterized by inflammation and/or fibrosis of areas of the lung dedicated to gas exchange. In this Special Issue entitled "Clinical and Radiological Features of Interstitial Lung Diseases", we collected a series of contributions in which a multidisciplinary approach was crucial for the correct diagnostic assessment of ILD. Sharing knowledge between different specialties can significantly improve diagnostic approaches and the management of ILD patients. This study investigated whether the promoter region of DNA methylation positively or negatively regulates tissue-specific genes (TSGs) and if it correlates with disease pathophysiology. We assessed tissue specificity metrics in five human tissues, using sequencing-based approaches, including 52 whole genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS), 52 RNA-seq, and 144 chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq) data. A correlation analysis was performed between the gene expression and DNA methylation levels of the TSG promoter region. The TSG enrichment analyses were conducted in the gene-disease association network (DisGeNET). The epigenomic association analyses of CpGs in enriched TSG promoters were performed using 1986 Infinium MethylationEPIC array data. A correlation analysis showed significant associations between the promoter methylation and 449 TSGs' expression. A disease enrichment analysis showed that diabetes- and obesity-related diseases were high-ranked. In an epigenomic association analysis based on obesity, 62 CpGs showed statistical significance. Among them, three obesity-related CpGs were newly identified and replicated with statistical significance in independent data. In particular, a CpG (cg17075888 of PDK4), considered as potential therapeutic targets, were associated with complex diseases, including obesity and type 2 diabetes. The methylation changes in a substantial number of the TSG promoters showed a significant association with metabolic diseases. Collectively, our findings provided strong evidence of the relationship between tissue-specific patterns of epigenetic changes and metabolic diseases.Spontaneous fermentation constitutes the basis of the chief natural method of processing of table olives, where autochthonous strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) play a dominant role. A thorough literature search has unfolded 197 reports worldwide, published in the last two decades, that indicate an increasing interest in table olive-borne LAB, especially in Mediterranean countries. This review attempted to extract extra information from such a large body of work, namely, in terms of correlations between LAB strains isolated, manufacture processes, olive types, and geographical regions. Spain produces mostly green olives by Spanish-style treatment, whereas Italy and Greece produce mainly green and black olives, respectively, by both natural and Spanish-style. More than 40 species belonging to nine genera of LAB have been described; the genus most often cited is Lactobacillus, with L. plantarum and L. pentosus as most frequent species-irrespective of country, processing method, or olive type. Certain LAB species are typically associated with cultivar, e.g., Lactobacillus parafarraginis with Spanish Manzanilla, or L. paraplantarum with Greek Kalamata and Conservolea, Portuguese Galega, and Italian Tonda di Cagliari. Despite the potential of native LAB to serve as starter cultures, extensive research and development efforts are still needed before this becomes a commercial reality in table olive fermentation.
