The current study suggests that the prevalence of stroke increased nearly by twofold in a population aged 65years or older within the past 10years. Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and being male were the primary risk factors. In addition, these factors were more significantly associated with stroke in 2019 compared to 2010.

The current study suggests that the prevalence of stroke increased nearly by twofold in a population aged 65 years or older within the past 10 years. Hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and being male were the primary risk factors. In addition, these factors were more significantly associated with stroke in 2019 compared to 2010.Dupilumab facial redness (DFR), or the development of an eczematous rash of the face and neck with dupilumab use, has been observed in recent case reports. It is estimated to impact between 4 and 43.8% of dupilumab users, including children and adults. Aside from reviewing the pathogenesis and clinical presentation, we present potential diagnostic steps (such as skin scraping, serologies, biopsy, and patch testing) and management options for DFR ranging from allergen avoidance to dupilumab interruption. It is hoped that this article will serve as a means for clinicians to familiarize themselves with DFR regarding the differential diagnosis, diagnostic tools, and treatment options associated with this phenomenon.Recent studies found that making judgments of learning (JOLs) can reactively facilitate memory, a phenomenon termed the reactivity effect of JOLs. The current study was designed to explore (1) whether making judgments of forgetting (JOFs) can also enhance memory and (2) whether there is any difference between the reactivity effects of JOFs and JOLs. Experiment 1 found that soliciting JOFs significantly enhanced retention of single words. Experiments 2 and 3 observed minimal difference in reactivity effects between JOFs and JOLs on learning of single words and word pairs. Finally, a meta-analysis was conducted to integrate results across studies to explore whether retention of items studied with JOLs differed from that of items studied with JOFs. The meta-analytic results showed minimal difference. Overall, the documented findings imply that (1) making JOFs reactively enhances memory, and (2) there is little difference in reactivity effects between JOFs and JOLs. These findings support the positive-reactivity theory to account for the reactivity effect.Accumulating evidence suggested that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) could play biological roles in cardiovascular diseases. check details We investigated whether lncRNAs can serve as biomarkers for salt sensitivity of blood pressure (SSBP). Participants were divided into salt-sensitive (SS) and salt-resistant (SR) ones by oral saline test. LncRNAs were tested by microarray (N = 20) and two-stage qRT-PCR (N = 89 and 228). We identified five differently expressed lncRNAs (lnc-IGSF3-11, SCOC-AS1, SLC8A1-AS1, KCNQ1OT1, and lnc-GNG-10-31) between SS and SR. In single-lncRNA analyses, lnc-IGSF3-11 displayed better diagnostic performance in hypertensive patients (AUC = 0.840), while SCOC-AS1 in normotensive (AUC = 0.810). In multi-lncRNA analyses, lnc-IGSF3-11 + SCOC-AS1 + SLC8A1-AS1 combination showed the best diagnostic performance in hypertensive (AUC = 0.853) and normotensive groups (AUC = 0.873). We constructed a lncRNA-mRNA-GO-KEGG-disease network by bioinformatic analysis; lnc-IGSF3-11 and SLC8A1-AS1 were identified as hub biomarkers. Our findings suggest that lnc-IGSF3-11, SCOC-AS1, and SLC8A1-AS1 may represent as genetic susceptible biomarkers for SSBP, and had different SS diagnostic performance in hypertensive patients and normotensive individuals.Cardiomyocytes are essential to maintain the normal cardiac function. Ischemia, hypoxia, and drug stimulation can induce pathological apoptosis of cardiomyocytes which eventually leads to heart failure, arrhythmia, and other cardiovascular diseases. Understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate cardiomyocyte apoptosis is of great significance for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. In recent years, more and more evidences reveal that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play important regulatory roles in myocardial cell apoptosis. They can modulate the expression of apoptosis-related genes at post-transcriptional level by altering the translation efficacy of target mRNAs or functioning as a precursor for miRNAs or competing for miRNA-mediated inhibition. Moreover, reversing the abnormal expression of lncRNAs can attenuate and even reverse the pathological apoptosis of cardiomyocytes. Therefore, apoptosis-related lncRNAs may become a potential new field for studying cardiomyocyte apoptosis and provide new ideas for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.Dapagliflozin (DAPA) exerts cardioprotective effects in non-diabetic patients. Nonetheless, the protective mechanism remains unknown. This study aims to evaluate the performance of DAPA on cardiac function and remodeling as well as its potential mechanism in mice with myocardial infarction (MI). Here, a MI mice model was established. One week after MI, mice were treated with saline or DAPA (1.5 mg/kg/day) for 4 weeks. At the end of this study, echocardiography was performed to assess cardiac structure and function. Myocardial apoptosis was analyzed by Western blot and immunofluorescence. Inflammatory cytokines and cardiac fibrosis were analyzed by real-time PCR and Masson's trichrome stain, respectively. Results showed that DAPA improved cardiac structure and function, attenuated cardiac fibrosis, and inhibited inflammatory cytokines and myocardial apoptosis. Moreover, the inhibition of PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway might be related to the cardioprotective role of DAPA. These findings reveal that dapagliflozin is a potential therapeutic agent for MI patients without diabetes. This study investigated the concentrations of potentially harmful elements (PHE) in edible tissues of trout fish (Salmo trutta) in the Phander Valley, Northern Pakistan. For this purpose, fish were sampled from the Phander Valley (Gilgit River and Phander Lake). PHE concentrations in edible fish tissues (muscle, fins, and skin) were determined using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS, AAnalyst 700, Perkin Elmer, USA). Among PHE, zinc (Zn) showed the highest concentration of 1097 μg/kg in the skin, followed by manganese (Mn) of 241 μg/kg in the muscle, and the lowest of 3.78 μg/kg for cadmium (Cd) in fins. The concentration of PHE in fish tissues of the study area was observed within the threshold limits set by the food and agriculture organization (FAO). PHE concentration of fish tissues was used for the calculation of chronic risk assessment using the chronic daily intake (CDI) and hazard quotient (HQ) indices. The highest CDI values were observed for Zn through fish tissue consumption in juveniles, followed by Mn, and the lowest for Cd in adults. The HQ values were observed less than 1 for adults through PHE consumption in fish tissue; however, that of juvenile surpassed the threshold limit through Cd consumption in all studied tissues and that of Pb in the muscle and skins only. Higher HQ values than the threshold limit could pose a potential chronic risk to the exposed community. Spearman's non-parametric correlation showed a varying degree of correlation among PHE in fish tissues and canonical discriminant analyses were used to differentiate the tissues based on PHE accumulation tendencies.Iodine is an essential trace element in the human body. Severe maternal iodine deficiency during pregnancy leads to obvious intellectual disability in the offspring. The effects of iodine deficiency on brain development have been demonstrated, but there is no clear evidence of the effects of iodine excess on brain development. To clarify the effects of iodine excess on the brain development of offspring and to provide clues to the mechanisms underlying the effects of iodine deficiency and iodine excess on the brain development of offspring. In this study, animal models with different iodine intakes were constructed using potassium iodate (KIO3). The models included four experimental groups (low-iodine group one (LI, 0μg/L iodine), low-iodine group two (LII, 5μg/L iodine), high-iodine group one (HI, 3000μg/L iodine), and high-iodine group two (HII, 10000μg/L iodine)) and one control group (NI, 100μg/L iodine). There were 20 female rats in each group, and 8 offspring were chosen from each group following birth ntrols, revealing new insights into hippocampal metabolism in offspring rats and new relevant targets. The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and the related disorder i.e. "coronavirus disease 2019" (COVID-19) has encouraged researchers to unravel the molecular mechanism of disease severity. Several lines of evidence support the impact of "cytokine storm" in the pathogenesis of severe forms of the disorder. We aimed to assess expression levels of nine cytokine coding genes in COVID-19 patients admitted in a hospital. We collected clinical data of patients from their medical reports. Then, we assessed expression of genes using real-time PCR. Expression levels of IFN-G, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-17, TGF-B, IL-8, and IL-1B were significantly higher in COVID-19 patients compared with healthy controls and in both female and male patients compared with sex-matched controls. However, expression level of TNF-A was not different between COVID-19 patients and healthy controls. Expression of none of these cytokines was different between ICU-admitted patients and other patients except for IL-6 whose expression was lower in the former group compared with the latter (ratio of means = 0.33, P value = 4.82E-02). Then, we assessed diagnostic power of cytokine coding genes in differentiating between COVID-19 patients and controls. The area under curve (AUC) values ranged from 0.94 for IFN-G to 1.0 for IL-2 and IL-1B. After combining the transcript levels of all cytokines, AUC, sensitivity, and specificity values reached 100%, 100%, and 99%, respectively. For differentiation between ICU-admitted patients and other patients, IL-4 with AUC value of 0.68 had the best diagnostic power among cytokine coding genes. Expression of none of cytokine coding genes was correlated with the available clinical/demographic data including age, gender, ICU admission, or erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)/C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. This study provides further evidence for contribution of "cytokine storm" in the pathobiology of moderate/severe forms of COVID-19.

The study aimed to investigate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence of eating disorders in Japan.

We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of new patients with eating disorders who visited an outpatient eating disorders clinic of a single university hospital in Tokyo, Japan, from April 2020 to March 2021 (FY2020) and April 2019 to March 2020 (FY2019). We determined whether the onset or course in each patient in FY2020 was associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and classified COVID-19-associated medical histories into the following categories (1) fatness phobia, (2) acceleration of dieting, (3) family relationships, (4) social factors, and (5) mood change. We performed the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to compare the cumulative distribution of disease onset by month in FY2020 and FY2019.

We reviewed the records of 112 and 77 patients with eating disorders in FY2020 and FY2019, respectively. The onset or course of 35 patients (31.3%) in FY2020 was associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. We classified 14 patients to fatness phobia category, 11 to acceleration of dieting, 4 to family relationships, 2 to social factors, and 4 to mood change.
