As demand for health services grows, task-shifting to lay health workers has become an attractive solution to address shortages in human resources. Community health workers (CHWs), particularly in low-resource settings, play critical roles in promoting equitable healthcare among underserved populations. However, CHWs often shoulder additional burdens as members of the same communities in which they work. We examined the experiences of a group of CHWs called Mentor Mothers (MMs) working in a maternal and child health programme, navigating the crossroads between personal and professional life in the rural Eastern Cape, South Africa. Semi-structured qualitative interviews (n = 10) were conducted by an experienced isiXhosa research assistant, asking MMs questions about their experiences working in their own communities, and documenting benefits and challenges. Interviews were transcribed and translated into English and thematically coded. Emergent themes include balancing roles (positive, affirming aspects of the role) and blurring boundaries (challenges navigating between professional and personal obligations). While many MMs described empowering clients to seek care and drawing strength from being seen as a respected health worker, others spoke about difficulties in adequately addressing clients' needs, and additional burdens they adopted in their personal lives related to the role. We discuss the implications of these findings, on an immediate level (equipping CHWs with self-care and boundary-setting skills), and an intermediate level (introducing opportunities for structured debriefings and emphasising supportive supervision). We also argue that, at a conceptual level, CHW programmes should provide avenues for professionalisation and invest more up-front in their workforce selection, training and support.

Elderly patients with advanced cancer often experience various symptoms and need a great amount of care. ABT-199 However, their spousal caregivers are prone to negative emotions because of old age, poor health and the heavy burden of care.

To examine the effect of a reminiscence therapy (RT) intervention on the spousal caregivers of elderly patients with advanced cancer.

This study was a randomised controlled trial. Fifty-six spousal caregivers were randomly assigned to the control group (N=29) receiving usual care and the experimental group (N=27) receiving the RT intervention. The caregivers' caregiving burden, positive feelings towards caregiving and hope were measured before and immediately after the intervention.

The experimental group showed a significant reduction in the burden of spousal care compared to the control group (p<.01). The experimental group also had higher levels of positive feelings and hope than did the control group (p<.01).

RT is an effective approach to reducing the care burden of spouses of elderly patients with advanced cancer and enhancing the spouses' positive feelings and hope.

In this work, the impact of Lewis-basic additives introduced in the precursor solution on the density of states in the perovskite bandgap is investigated. Ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and contact potential difference measurements are conducted on MHP thin films processed from dimethylformamide (DMF)-based solutions to which either no additive, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), or N-methylpyrrolidine-2-thione (NMPT) is added. The results show the presence of a density of states in the gap of methylammonium lead halide films processed from DMSO-containing solution. The density of gap states is either suppressed when the methylammonium concentration in mixed cation films is reduced or when NMPT is used as an additive, and eliminated when methylammonium (MA) is replaced with cesium or formamidinium (FA). These results are consistent with the notion that reaction products that result from DMSO reacting with MA+ in the precursor solution are responsible for the formation of gap states. The present study involves an ecofriendly strategy for the reduction of bulk silver into its nanoforms by using the aqueous extracts of Mentha longifolia leaves (MLL), M. longifolia branches (MLB), and Mentha arvensis (MA). Synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was confirmed initially by observing a change in the color of the reaction mixture followed by measuring the absorbance, and a characteristic surface plasmon resonance band was observed between 400 and 500 nm of the λ of light. Morphological and optical characterization techniques of AgNPs were performed by using UV-visible spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis. It was confirmed that the phytosynthesized nanoparticles are anisotropic and nearly spherical having a size smaller than 100 nm while some cubical and prismatic nanostructures were also observed. The average size of a single nanoparticle measured by DLS analysis was reported 10.50 nm, 15.55 nm, and 20.46 nm biofabricated by using MLB, MLL, and MA extract, respectively. The EDX analysis reported the presence of elemental Ag while elemental O was also observed in MLL and MLB AgNPs. The results from these experiments endorse the potential of reported plant species to phytosynthesize AgNPs. The future applications of this work involve the utilization of AgNPs for multiple biological applications.

Commonly, the application of radiological and clinical criteria and the determination of galactomannan (GM) in respiratory samples are used as a diagnostic tool for the detection of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA).

In this study, two lateral flow assays, OLM Aspergillus lateral flow device (LFD) and IMMY sōna Aspergillus Galactomannan lateral flow assay (LFA), were evaluated at two tertiary hospitals in Germany. A total of 200 bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples from patients with suspicion of IPA were analysed retrospectively. LFD and LFA were evaluated against four different criteria Blot, EORTC/MSG, Schauwvlieghe and extended Blot criteria and additionally against GM.

The evaluation of four algorithms for the diagnosis of IPA showed that there exist good diagnostic tools to rule out an IPA even before results of Aspergillus culture are available. Sensitivities and negative predictive values are generally higher for the LFA than for the LFD in all four criteria. Specificity and positive predictive values varied depending on the classification criteria.
