Cardiac abnormalities are the most common and deadly comorbidities of acromegaly. Assessments using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging in acromegaly patients are rare. We aimed to evaluate the frequencies of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), interventricular septum hypertrophy (IVSH), LV systolic dysfunction (LVSD), right ventricular systolic dysfunction (RVSD), and myocardial fibrosis (MCF) and detailed quantitative parameters in acromegaly patients using CMR and analyze their correlations with clinical features. Sixty-one patients were enrolled in this study. The rates of LVH, IVSH, LVSD, RVSD, and MCF were 26.2%, 27.9%, 8.2%, 9.8%, and 14.8%, respectively. The average LV mass, LV mass index, IVS thickness, LV and RV free wall thickness, and LV and RV ejection fractions were 114.4 g, 60.0 g/m2, 9.6 mm, 7.2 mm, 2.9 mm, 59.9%, and 56.6%, respectively. The LV mass index was larger (68.9 ± 26.0 vs. 48.8 ± 10.6 g/m2), the IVS was thicker (10.3 ± 2.8 vs. 8.8 ± 1.8 mm), and the LV (57.6 ± 12.3% vs. 62.8 ± 4.8%) and RV ejection fractions (54.6 ± 8.7% vs. 59.2 ± 5.9%) were lower in male patients than in female patients (all p less then 0.05). Age, body mass index (BMI), disease duration, and hypertension were associated with cardiac abnormalities (all p less then 0.05). In conclusion, structural and functional cardiac abnormalities can be comprehensively evaluated by CMR in acromegaly patients. Gender greatly affects the presence of cardiac abnormalities. Age, BMI, disease duration, and hypertension but not GH or IGF-1 levels are associated clinical factors. They might have a greater risk to develop gonadal dysfunction later in life. These criteria may be used to define male PCOS-equivalent. Forty male Wistar rats were divided into two groups a test group (n = 20) that included mature rats that were born to dams exposed to gestational treatment with hydroxyprogesterone and a control group (n = 20) that included mature rats born to untreated dams. Compared to the control group, the test group showed a significant reduction in the sperm count, viability and motility, relative testicular and epididymal weights together with increased abnormal spermatozoa (p less then 0.001). The reproductive hormonal assay revealed significantly lower serum testosterone and higher levels of FSH and LH among the test groups compared to the control (p less then 0.05 for all). Prenatal exposure to synthetic progesterone negatively affected sperm production and function, relative testicular and epididymal weights, and reproductive hormone levels. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a linear peptide constituted by 84 amino acids and active in its 1-84 form, but a wide range of PTH forms produced by its post-transcriptional modifications are present in blood. Many assays with different specificities are commercially available. The aim of our study was to compare a 2nd and 3rd generation in healthy population in order to better define the reference range in the healthy population residing in our region. Materials and Methods. 108 subjects (53 females and 55 males) referring to the transfusion donor were enrolled in the study centre in April 2016 and underwent PTH levels measurements with a 3rd generation kit (chemiluminescent immunoassay DiaSorin Liaison) and with a 2nd generation kit (immunoradiometric assay Total Intact PTH Assay (Coated Tube), Scantibodies). Also calcium, phosphate, creatinine, and 25OHD3 were measured. A questionnaire on lifestyle and dietary habits was obtained. Results The median PTH values obtained with the 2nd generation assay and the whole 3rd generation assay were 20.26 pg/ml and 23.11 pg/ml, respectively. Bland-Altman method showed substantial concordance between the two PTH assays, although with an overestimation of the 3rd generation method over the 2nd generation method. There was no correlation between 3rd generation PTH and 25OHD3 and creatinine. Calcium was negatively correlated with PTH only when measured with 3rd generation kit. Conclusions On the basis of our data, obtained from healthy subjects, we can conclude that the reference range used by our laboratory was too narrow and was necessary to reestablish normal ranges according to our population. This is useful to avoid hyperparathyroidism misdiagnosis. Copyright © 2020 Simona Censi et al.The number of elderly patients with cancer is growing. Our study goals were to determine the prevalence of geriatric syndromes in elderly cancer patients receiving chemotherapy and its related factors using a basic geriatric screening tool. A cross-sectional study using the basic geriatric screening tool was conducted to survey geriatric problems in a population of elderly cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. There were 85 participants who were ≥60 years old. Descriptive statistics and regression analyses were used. The prevalence of having at least one geriatric syndrome was 58.8% (50 out of 85 cases). CBR-470-1 activator Depression was the most common component both in male and female patients. Age ≥65 years old was significantly associated with the geriatric syndrome (AOR 4.23, p=0.018), and a factor associated with depression was underweight (BMI less then 18.5 kg/m2) (AOR 13.2, p=0.003). In summary, geriatric syndromes are common in elderly cancer patients. Screening for geriatric syndrome adds substantial data on the assessment of elderly cancer patients, even those with a good performance status. Methods This is a 16-year longitudinal study of follow-up. We used sample data of the SABE (Health, Well-Being and Aging) study cohort and mortality data obtained through the Mortality Information Improvement Program of the City of São Paulo (PRO-AIM) from the 2000-2016 period. Survival analysis was performed using Cox proportional hazard models. Results Hypertension (HT) was the most prevalent disease in older adults (52.93%), followed by musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) (27.09%), cardiovascular diseases (CD) (17.79%), diabetes mellitus (DM) (16.95%), mental disorders (MD) (15.43%), and respiratory diseases (RD) (9.72%). The highest mortality rate in women was observed in the combination of HT/MSDs/DM/MD (HR = 6.15, 95% CI = 2.32, 16.32), while in men was in the combination of HT/CD/MSDs/DM (HR = 5.72, 95% CI = 1.72, 19.06). Conclusion Similar to previous studies carried out in developed countries, we found that all-cause mortality increased as diseases are added to an individual.
