This study was conducted to develop and verify the effects of a garden-based integrated intervention for improving children's eating behavior for vegetables. A pre-post-test experimental design was employed. The participants were 202 elementary school students (average age 11.6 ± 1.5 years). The garden-based integrated intervention program was conducted during regular school hours for a total of 12 weeks. The program, based on a mediator model for improving children's eating behavior, included gardening, nutritional education, and cooking activities utilizing harvests. In order to examine effects of the program, the mediating factors related to children's eating behavior were evaluated using pre-post questionnaires. As a result of the program, dietary self-efficacy, outcome expectancies, gardening knowledge, nutrition knowledge, vegetable preference, and vegetable consumption were significantly increased, and food neophobia was significantly decreased. In addition, there were positive correlations between most mediating factors. Thus, the garden-based integrated intervention developed in this study was effective in improving children's eating behavior for vegetables.Two-phase flows are found in several industrial systems/applications, including boilers and condensers, which are used in power generation or refrigeration, steam generators, oil/gas extraction wells and refineries, flame stabilizers, safety valves, among many others. The structure of these flows is complex, and it is largely governed by the extent of interphase interactions. In the last two decades, due to a large development of microfabrication technologies, many microstructured devices involving several elements (constrictions, contractions, expansions, obstacles, or T-junctions) have been designed and manufactured. The pursuit for innovation in two-phase flows in these elements require an understanding and control of the behaviour of bubble/droplet flow. The need to systematize the most relevant studies that involve these issues constitutes the motivation for this review. In the present work, literature addressing gas-liquid and liquid-liquid flows, with Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, and covering theoretical, experimental, and numerical approaches, is reviewed. Particular focus is given to the deformation, coalescence, and breakup mechanisms when bubbles and droplets pass through the aforementioned microfluidic elements.An expansion joint is mainly composed of bellows and other components; it is attached on a container shell or pipe to compensate for the additional stress caused by temperature differences and mechanical vibrations. In China, the expansion joint fatigue tests are often used to assess the quality of products. After fatigue tests, convolution pitch will be changed. The amount of change is an important index that can be used to evaluate bellows expansion joints. However, the convolution pitch detection is mainly done manually and randomly by inspection agencies before shipping to the end users. This common practice is not efficient and is often subjective. This paper introduced a novel method for automatically detecting the change of the convolution pitch based on a laser line scanner and data processing technology. The laser line scanner is combined with a precision motorized stage to obtain the point cloud data of the bellows. After denoising and fitting, a peak-finding algorithm is applied to search for the crest of a convolution. The method to find the convolution pitch and the decision that needs to be made to ensure product eligibility are described in detail. A DN500 expansion joint is used as a sample to illustrate the efficiency of the system. The application of the technique intuitively allows a higher precision and relative efficiency in quality inspection of bellows expansion joints. It has also been implemented in the Special Equipment Safety Supervision and Inspection Institute of Jiangsu province with great success.Dengue virus (DENV) comprises four serotypes in the family Flaviviridae and is a causative agent of dengue-related diseases, including dengue fever. Dengue fever is generally a self-limited febrile illness. However, secondary infection of patients with a suboptimal antibody (Ab) response provokes life-threatening severe dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome. To develop a potent candidate subunit vaccine against DENV infection, we developed the EDII-cEDIII antigen, which contains partial envelope domain II (EDII) including the fusion loop and BC loop epitopes together with consensus envelope domain III (cEDIII) of all four serotypes of DENV. We purified Ab from mice after immunization with EDII-cEDIII or cEDIII and compared their virus neutralization and Ab-dependent enhancement of DENV infection. Anti-EDII-cEDIII Ab showed stronger neutralizing activity and lower Ab-dependent peak enhancement of DENV infection compared with anti-cEDIII Ab. Following injection of Ab-treated DENV into AG129 mice, anti-EDII-cEDIII Ab ameliorated DENV infection in tissues with primary and secondary infection more effectively than anti-cEDIII Ab. In addition, anti-EDII-cEDIII Ab protected against DENV1, 2, and 4 challenge. We conclude that EDII-cEDIII induces neutralizing and protective Abs, and thus, shows promise as a candidate subunit vaccine for DENV infection.Early diagnosis is essential but challenging in severe sepsis. Quantifying and comparing metabolite concentrations in serum has been suggested as a new diagnostic tool. Here we used proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) based metabolomics to analyze the possible differences in metabolite concentrations between sera taken from septic patients and healthy controls, as well as between sera of surviving and non-surviving sepsis patients. We took serum samples from 44 sepsis patients when the first sepsis induced organ dysfunction was found. Serum samples were also collected from 14 age and gender matched healthy controls. The samples were analyzed by quantitative 1H NMR spectroscopy for non-lipid metabolites. We found that the serum levels of glucose, glycine, 3-hydroxybutyrate, creatinine and glycoprotein acetyls (mostly alpha-1-acid glycoprotein, AGP) were significantly (p less then 0.05) higher in sepsis compared to healthy sera, whereas citrate and histidine were significantly (p less then 0.05) lower in sepsis patients compared to healthy controls. We found statistically significantly higher serum lactate and citrate concentrations in non-survivors compared to 30-day survivors. According to our study, 3-hydroxybutyrate, citrate, glycine, histidine, and AGP are candidates for further studies to enable identification of phenotype association in the early stages of sepsis.Improving nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is very important for crops throughout the world. They largely obtain all required nutrients from floral resources, i.e., pollen and nectar. However, the diversity, composition and nutritional quality of floral resources varies with the surrounding environment and can be strongly altered in human-impacted habitats. We investigated whether differences in plant species richness as found in the surrounding environment correlated with variation in the floral diversity and nutritional quality of larval provisions (i.e., mixtures of pollen, nectar and salivary secretions) composed by the mass-provisioning stingless bee Tetragonula carbonaria (Apidae Meliponini). We found that the floral diversity of larval provisions increased with increasing plant species richness. The sucrose and fat (total fatty acid) content and the proportion and concentration of the omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid decreased, whereas the proportion of the omega-3 fatty acid linolenic acid increased with increasing plant species richness. Protein (total amino acid) content and amino acid composition did not change. The protein to fat (PF) ratio, known to affect bee foraging, increased on average by more than 40% from plantations to forests and gardens, while the omega-63 ratio, known to negatively affect cognitive performance, decreased with increasing plant species richness. However, few studies have logically explained and empirically clarified the link between mistreatment by patients and nurses' job satisfaction and turnover intention. The current study aimed to explore the effects of mistreatment by patients on nurses' job satisfaction and turnover intention through work meaningfulness and emotional dissonance, as well as the moderating role of hostile attribution bias. Using three-wave survey data collect from 657 nurses who worked in three hospitals in China, we found that mistreatment by patients had a negative effect on nurses' job satisfaction through work meaningfulness, mistreatment by patients had a positive effect on nurses' turnover intention through emotional dissonance. Furthermore, nurses' hostile attribution bias acted as an effective moderator on the relationship. These findings help uncover the mechanisms and conditions in which mistreatment by patients influences nurses' job satisfaction and turnover intention.
