The upgrade of an item can be used to boost the stats of a particular item. Depending on the upgrade type it can raise an item's Mark level or Rarity, and also boost other stats.

Item Stats

The item's stats can determine the fate of an item for players. This is especially advantageous in the early game, since players tend to prioritize defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.

Luck can also increase the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chance which increases with each level of the item and can be further enhanced by using an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

The shields, armor and weapons have the default Luck value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on their material type) to add another 40 luck, or to increase the luck of the item to 140.

Certain items, like the Hollow-infused weapon, can also be equipped to increase the damage of any skill that deals damage by 5%. These items can be purchased in the shop or crafted with the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Upgrades to items can be costly and not every upgrade will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chance of success of an upgrade or to stop players from losing their items if it is not successful.

When you upgrade an item, the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the probability of successful upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special Materials. The probability of success can only be increased by so much, and the chance that an upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%..

The success of an item upgrades is also influenced by the Luck of that item. Every item has a success rate of 25 percent, and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent.

It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the inventory items which means that enchantment glints and other effects could be masked by them.
