The problem of microplastic pollution is now the order of the day in front of everyone's eyes affecting the environment and the health of leaving creature. This work aims to retrace the history of microplastics in a critical way through a substantial bibliographic collection, defining the points still unresolved and those that can be resolved. Presence of marine litter in different environments is reviewed on a global scale, focusing in particular on micro and macro plastics definition, classification and characterization techniques.Microplastic particles (MP) uptake by marine organisms is a phenomenon of global concern. Nevertheless, there is scarce evidence about the impacts of MP on the energy balance of marine invertebrates. We evaluated the mid-term effect of the microplastic ingestion at the current higher environmental concentrations in the ocean on the energy balance of the giant mussel Choromytilus chorus. We exposed juvenile mussels to three concentrations of microplastics (0, 100, and 1000 particles L-1) and evaluated the effect on physiology after 40 days. The impacts of MP on the ecophysiological traits of the mussels were minimum at all the studied concentrations. At intermediate concentrations of MP, Scope for Growth (SFG) had little impact. Other relevant key life-history and physiological processes, such as size and metabolism, were not affected by microplastics. However, individuals treated with MP presented histopathological differences compared to control group, which could result in adverse health effects for mussels.The Leach's storm-petrel (Hydrobates leucorhous) is one of the most abundant and widely distributed marine birds in the North Atlantic but is under global population decline, possibly linked to marine pollution. We determined levels of ingested plastic and hepatic total mercury (THg) in recently fledged juveniles that stranded in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, and assessed the relationship to body condition, size and diet. Plastic prevalence was high (87.5%) but hepatic THg was relatively low (mean 486.7 ng/g dry weight) compared to other studies. To improve pH/redox responsiveness to the tumor microenvironments for cancer therapy, a pH/redox-responsive micelle based on poly(ε-caprolactone)-SS-poly(methacrylic acid) (PCL-SS-PMAA) diblock copolymer was fabricated for dual drug delivery. The PCL-SS-PMAA was formulated into a core-shell micelle (PSPm) in an aqueous solution. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) values of PSPm were 7.94 × 10-3 mg mL-1 at pH 5.0 and 1.00 × 10-2 mg mL-1 at pH 7.4. The hydrodynamic diameters of PSPm were within 210-270 nm, depending on pH values. Changes in morphology and size of PSPm were clearly observed before and after exposure to a reducing agent. Paclitaxel (PTX) was encapsulated into the core and cisplatin (CDDP) was chelated on the shell of PSPm, with both PTX and CDDP being efficiently released from PSPm in the presence of a reducing agent in an acid condition. MTT and annexin V/propidium iodide dual staining results demonstrated that co-loading of CDDP and PTX into PSPm had a synergistic effect in killing lung cancer cells and exerted superior antitumor activity over the combination of single drug-loaded PSPm or the combination of free-CDDP and free-PTX at equivalent drug amounts. Hence, encapsulating the dual drugs into PSPm exhibits a synergistic effect for potential lung cancer therapy.

This article introducesTreatment Verification Behavior (TVB) to conceptualize patient proactivity. The article also aims to examine doctors' responses to patients' TVBs.

A doctor-patient paired, two-wave data set was collected from eight hospitals in North China. We collected data from 304 doctor-patient dyads with each doctor rating, on average, three inpatients.

The results show that when patients consulted their doctors about information regarding a diagnosis or treatment (i.e.,consulting TVB), it improved doctors' perception of the patients' ability, which further increased doctors' work engagement. Alternatively, when patients challenged doctors about information regarding a diagnosis or treatment (i.e., challenging TVB), it induced doctors' perception of threat but without significantly decreasing doctors' work engagement. In addition, when doctors felt respected by patients, this feeling moderated the effects of patients' TVBs on doctors' reactions.

Both the content (the "what") and the manner (the "how") of patients' proactive communications with their doctors will influence doctors' responses.

These insights suggest that patient and doctor communication training should include components that address both the content and performance of communication.
