The present findings show deterioration of autophagy in association with premature skin aging. Autophagy flux was successfully determined in skin tissues, which demonstrated significantly decreased autophagy in hyperpigmented skin such as that seen in senile lentigo. Furthermore, an exacerbated decline in autophagy was confirmed in xerotic hyperpigmentation areas, accompanied by severe dehydration and a barrier defect, which showed correlations with skin physiological conditions. The enhancement of autophagy in skin ex vivo ameliorated skin integrity, including pigmentation and epidermal differentiation. The present results indicate that the restoration of autophagy can contribute to improving premature skin aging by various intrinsic and extrinsic factors via the normalization of protein homeostasis.A new type of sustainable light conversion nanocomposite film was fabricated by using carboxymethyl xylan as matrix and xylan-derived carbon dots (CDs) as both light conversion regents and nano reinforcements. The results demonstrate that CDs can not only significantly enhance the mechanical strength of the nanocomposite film because of chemical reaction between CDs and carboxymethyl xylan, but also impart the film with excellent optical properties. With 1.92 wt% CDs, the tensile strength and elastic modulus of the film are increased by 114.3% and 90.7%, respectively. Moreover, the film has typical excitation and emission spectra, enabling the efficient absorption of UV and the conversion of UV to blue light. This xylan-derived light conversion nanocomposite film is expected to be used in agricultural planting and food packaging.

Development of a universal vaccine capable to induce antibody responses against a broad range of influenza virus strains attracts growing attention. Hemagglutinin stem and the exposed fragment of influenza virus M2 protein are promising targets for induction of cross-protective humoral and cell-mediated response, since they contain conservative epitopes capable to induce antibodies and cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) to a wide range of influenza virus subtypes.

In this study, we generated DNA vaccine constructs encoding artificial antigens AgH1, AgH3, and AgM2 designed on the basis of conservative hemagglutinin stem fragments of two influenza A virus subtypes, H1N1 and H3N2, and conservative M2 protein, and evaluate their immunogenicity and protective efficacy. To obtain DNA vaccine constructs, genes encoding the designed antigens were cloned into a pcDNA3.1 vector. Expression of the target genes in 293T cells transfected with DNA vaccine constructs has been confirmed by synthesis of specific mRNA.

Immunization of BALB/c mice with DNA vaccines encoding these antigens was shown to evoke humoral and T-cell immune responses as well as a moderated statistically significant cross-protective effect against two heterologous viruses A/California/4/2009 (H1N1pdm09) and A/Aichi/2/68 (H3N2).

Here we investigated the composition of skin secretions of adult Vipera ammodytes (Linnaeus, 1758) individuals. The samples were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and the identification of the compounds was performed using commercial mass spectral libraries and retention times. MEK inhibitor The relative concentrations of all detected compounds were tested for significant differences between (1) male vs. female live individuals, (2) shed skin vs. live individuals, and (3) pre-reproductive vs. reproductive live individuals. We detected fifty-nine compounds of which six were ketones. Two ketones (2-pentacosanone and 2-heptacosanone) were present in many of the samples and thus may have an important role in the V. ammodytes chemical communication. We did not find significant differences between the relative concentrations of the compounds between male and female individuals (only three compounds are exceptions). Significant differences were found between extracts from shed skins and live individuals and between live pre-reproductive individuals and live reproductive individuals. The results of the study suggest that chemical communication in V. ammodytes involves less compounds in comparison to the known literature data for other species.In modern cars, the Passive Keyless Entry and Start system (PKES) has been extensively installed. The PKES enables drivers to unlock and start their cars without user interaction. However, it is vulnerable to relay attacks. In this paper, we propose a secure smartphone-type PKES system model based on user context detection. The proposed system uses the barometer and accelerometer embedded in smartphones to detect user context, including human activity and door closing event. These two types of events detection can be used by the PKES to determine the car owner's position when the car receives an unlocking or a start command. We evaluated the performance of the proposed method using a dataset collected from user activity and 1526 door closing events. The results reveal that the proposed method can accurately and effectively detect user activities and door closing events. Therefore, smartphone-type PKES can prevent relay attacks. Furthermore, we tested the detection of door closing event under multiple environmental settings to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method.
