Adult Women With ADD Face Daily Challenges

Adult women suffering from ADHD face challenges every day. They are often misdiagnosed or neglected because many doctors consider ADD as a condition that affects men and boys. Many ADD symptoms in females vary in response to hormones. They become more noticeable during puberty, and then decrease as estrogen levels decrease during PMS or perimenopause.

Symptoms

Women who suffer from adult ADD are impatient, easily frustrated and impulsive. They are often impulsive and get involved in projects without thinking them through things like careers and relationships. A lot of them also suffer from rejection sensitivity, which makes it difficult for them to deal with actual or perceived rejection. They are more likely than women who do not have ADD to engage in risky behaviours such as early sexual contact or casual sexual activity. They might also have multiple partners, an unprotected pregnancy, and multiple partners. More is often a co-occurring condition that results from ADD and must be treated equally. ADD symptoms are more apparent in girls during puberty, PMS, and as estrogen levels decrease during perimenopausal and menopause.

Diagnosis

Doctors can miss diagnosing ADD in women due to the fact that they mistakenly believe that it is more prevalent in boys. Women with ADD tend to be more emotional especially when they are puberty, PMS and in perimenopause and menopause as hormone levels change. They may be impulsive, and rushing into situations without planning. Depression is often a co-occurring disorder or as a result.
