Patients undergoing treatment in intensive care unit are in an extremely vulnerable state and require a complex multidisciplinary approach. Adequate sleep is required to maintain physiologic functions of the human body. Good sleep quality plays a vital role in the process of recovery. Sleep disruption in intensive care settings is a well-known fact. The consequences of sleep deprivation can cause numerous complications including delayed mechanical ventilation wean, neurocognitive dysfunction, decreased immune function and increased mortality rates. This review describes how the intensive care unit environment impacts sleep architecture.Sleep affects physiologic and psychological recovery throughout critical illness. Patients often describe poor sleep as a major source of distress while hospitalized in an intensive care unit. The intensive care unit environment poses unique challenges for sleep assessment and monitoring. The purpose of this literature review is to discuss methods of assessment and monitoring of sleep within the intensive care unit setting. The advantages and disadvantages of physiologic monitoring of sleep (eg, polysomnography, bispectral index, and actigraphy) are compared with those of subjective measures of sleep quality (eg, validated patient-oriented sleep questionnaires, and informal nursing assessments).Dinophysis spp. are mixotrophs that are dependent on specific prey, but are also potentially reliant on dissolved nutrients. The extent to which Dinophysis relies on exogenous N and the specific biochemical pathways important for supporting its autotrophic and heterotrophic growth are unknown. Here, the nutritional ecology of Dinophysis was explored using two approaches 1) 15N tracer experiments were conducted to quantify the concentration-dependent uptake rates and associated kinetics of various N compounds (nitrate, ammonium, urea) of Dinophysis cultures and 2) the transcriptomic responses of Dinophysis cultures grown with multiple combinations of prey and nutrients were assessed via dinoflagellate spliced leader-based transcriptome profiling. Of the N compounds examined, ammonium had the highest Vmax and affinity coefficient, and lowest Ks for both pre-starved and pre-fed cultures, collectively demonstrating the preference of Dinophysis for this N source while little-to-no nitrate uptake was observed. Durie biochemical pathways that facilitate its mixotrophic growth.Pseudo-nitzschia species frequently blooms in coastal waters, and some species are able to produce the toxin domoic acid (DA), hereby causing harm to the marine ecosystem and humans. Laboratory studies were conducted to investigate the influence of different levels of grazing pressure on the morphological and chemical response (in terms of cellular DA production) of Pseudo-nitzschia. Subsequently, zooplankton grazer responses to these defenses were examined. The cellular DA content of P. multiseries ranged from 0.11-0.27 pg cell-1 without grazers, and increased up to 44% with the presence of grazers (Artemia nauplii) and with grazer concentration. Grazing also affected the density of P. multiseries chains and average chain length which became ~25% higher and ~8% longer, respectively, than without grazers. These effects could either be caused by size-dependent grazing or by grazer-cue-induced effects on chain formation. A negative correlation between cellular DA content in P. multiseries and clearance and/or ingestion rates of Artemia nauplii indicate that DA might have a negative effect on the grazing of Artemia nauplii. Such interaction might result in a decrease in grazing pressure on toxic blooming species, like P. multiseries, and hence potentially a prolonged bloom. This indicates that the interaction between toxic diatoms and grazers may have implications on aquatic food web structure and the progression of Pseudo-nitzschia blooms. The ADA clade of Nostocales cyanobacteria, a group that is prominent in current harmful algal bloom events, now includes over 40 genome sequences with the recent addition of sixteen novel sequenced genomes (Dreher et al., Harmful Algae, 2021). Fourteen genomes are complete (closed), enabling highly detailed assessments of gene content and genome architecture. ADA genomes contain 5 rRNA operons, genes expected to support a photoautotrophic and diazotrophic lifestyle, and a varied array of genes for the synthesis of bioactive secondary metabolites. Genes for the production of the taste-and-odor compound geosmin and the four major classes of cyanotoxins - anatoxin-a, cylindrospermopsin, microcystin and saxitoxin - are represented in members of the ADA clade. Notably, the gene array for the synthesis of cylindrospermopsin by Dolichospermum sp. DET69 was located on a plasmid, raising the possibility of facile horizontal transmission. However, genes supporting independent conjugative transfer of this plasmid are ladence of viral infection was observed in the bloom population samples from which the genomes discussed here were derived. Phages thus seem to have a limited influence on ADA evolution. In 2018, the bloom of harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides occurred under abnormally high water temperature (WT) conditions caused by heatwaves in Korean coastal water (KCW). To better understand C. polykrikoides bloom at high WTs in 2018, we conducted field survey and laboratory experiments (the physiological and genetic differences between the two strains, CP2013 and CP2018). The heatwave increased the WT from 24.1°C to 29.2°C for two weeks, leading to strong stratification even in mid July (p less then 0.01, Chi square = 94.656, Kruskal-Wallis test). check details Under early stratification conditions, patch blooms formed more earlier than the average outbreak in the last 17 years in KCW, despite high WT reaching 30°C. In laboratory experiments, although there were no genetic differences in the LSU rDNA, both strains showed a significant different growth response to high WTs; above 28°C, CP2013 did not survive, but CP2018 was able to grow, suggesting that CP2018 had potential growth capacity at high WTs. However, the growth rate and yield of the culture (CP2018) were lowered at 30°C. Also, the blooms of C. polykrikoides in 2018 lasted only 3 weeks, which is unusual short compared to the average duration since 2002. The negative correlation between the average WT and duration of C. polykrikoides bloom in previous 17 years (R2 = 0.518, p less then 0.01) supports that high WT approaching 30°C is not favorable for C. polykrikoides in KCW. Thus, our findings indicated that in relation to heatwaves, early stratification condition plays a critical role in developing C. polykrikoides blooms, but maintaining bloom are negatively affected under high WT conditions.
