The complex forces that shape butterfly wings have long been a subject of experimental and comparative research. Butterflies use their wings for flight, camouflage, mate recognition, warning and mimicry. However, general patterns and correlations among wing shape and size evolution are still poorly understood. We collected geometric morphometric measurements from over 1400 digitized museum specimens of Papilio swallowtails and combined them with phylogenetic data to test two hypotheses 1) forewing shape and size evolve independently of hindwing shape and size, and 2) wing size evolves more quickly than wing shape. We also determined the major axes of wing shape variation and discovered that most shape variability occurs in hindwing tails and adjacent areas. We conclude that forewing shape and size are functionally and biomechanically constrained, while hindwings are more labile, perhaps in response to disruptive selective pressure for Batesian mimicry or against predation. The development of a significant, re-usable, digitized data resource will enable further investigation on tradeoffs between flight performance and ecological selective pressures, along with the degree to which intraspecific, local-scale selection may explain macroevolutionary patterns. © The Author(s) 2020. For permissions, please email journals.permissions@oup.com.OBJECTIVE Vedolizumab (VDZ) has been incriminated in the occurrence of articular manifestations in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). The aim of this study was to describe musculoskeletal manifestations occurring in IBD patients treated by VDZ and to identify risk factors. METHODS In this retrospective monocentric study, we included all consecutive patients treated by VDZ for IBD in our hospital. Incident musculoskeletal manifestations occurring during VDZ treatment were analysed and characteristics of patients with and without articular inflammatory manifestations were compared. RESULTS Between 2013 and 2017, 112 patients were treated with VDZ for IBD ulcerative colitis (n = 59), Crohn's disease (n = 49) and undetermined colitis (n = 4). Four patients (3.6%) had a history of SpA, whereas 13 (11.6%) had a history of peripheral arthralgia. Some 102 (91.1%) patients had previously received anti-TNF. After a mean (s.d.) follow-up of 11.4 (8.6) months, 32 (28.6%) patients presented 35 musculoskeletal manifestations, of which 18 were mechanical and 17 inflammatory. Among the latter, 11 had axial or peripheral SpA, 5 had early reversible arthralgia and 1 had chondrocalcinosis (n = 1). Among the 11 SpA patients, only 3 (2.6%) had inactive IBD and may be considered as paradoxical SpA. The only factor associated with occurrence of inflammatory manifestations was history of inflammatory articular manifestation [7/16 (43.8%) vs 10/80 (12.5%), P = 0.007]. see more CONCLUSION Musculoskeletal manifestations occurred in almost 30% of IBD patients treated with VDZ, but only half of them were inflammatory. Since most of the patients previously received anti-TNF, occurrence of inflammatory articular manifestations might rather be linked to anti-TNF discontinuation than to VDZ itself. © The Author(s) 2020. For permissions, please email journals.permissions@oup.com.OBJECTIVE Complement components, including C4d, can be found on activated platelets, a process associated with vascular disease in SLE. We investigated whether platelet C4d (PC4d) adds additional value to traditional and known lupus-associated risk factors when identifying SLE patients with vascular disease. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 308 well-characterized SLE patients and 308 matched general population controls. PC4d deposition was analysed using flow cytometry. Values >95% of controls were considered as PC4d positive (+). aPL were determined by Luminex, and the LA test was performed by DRVVT. History of vascular disease (composite and as separate outcomes) was defined at inclusion. RESULTS SLE patients had increased PC4d deposition as compared with population controls (50 vs 5%, P  less then  0.0001). PC4d+ positively associated with any vascular events, and separately with venous and cerebrovascular events, and also with all investigated aPL profiles. The association for any vascular event remained statistically significant after adjustment for traditional and SLE-associated risk factors (odds ratio 2.3, 95% CI 1.3, 4.3, P = 0.008). Compared with patients negative for both PC4d and LA, patients with double positivity were more likely to have vascular disease (odds ratio 12.3, 95% CI 5.4, 29.3; attributable proportion due to interaction 0.8, 95% CI 0.4, 1.1). CONCLUSION PC4d+ is associated with vascular events in SLE, independently of traditional and SLE-associated risk factors. Concurrent presence of PC4d and LA seem to interact to further increase the odds for vascular events. Prospective studies should examine whether the aPL/PC4d combination can improve prediction of vascular events in SLE and/or APS. © The Author(s) 2020. Within a species, a single family of satellite sequences typically occupies centromeres of all chromosomes and is absent from other parts of the genome. Due to their common origin, sequence similarities exist among the centromere-specific satellites in related species. Here, we report a remarkably different pattern of centromere evolution in the plant tribe Fabeae, which includes genera Pisum, Lathyrus, Vicia, and Lens. By immunoprecipitation of centromeric chromatin with CENH3 antibodies, we identified and characterized a large and diverse set of 64 families of centromeric satellites in 14 species. These families differed in their nucleotide sequence, monomer length (33-2,979 bp), and abundance in individual species. Most families were species-specific, and most species possessed multiple (2-12) satellites in their centromeres. Some of the repeats that were shared by several species exhibited promiscuous patterns of centromere association, being located within CENH3 chromatin in some species, but apart from the centromeres in others.
