Our multiproxy approach using mesowear, hypsodonty, and stable carbon isotopes of tooth enamel to infer the diets of ungulates in the Upper Laetolil Beds shows that this community is dominated by browsers and mixed feeders and has a very low prevalence of grazers and frugivores. This dietary guild composition distinguishes the Upper Laetolil Beds from modern African communities and suggests either that the Upper Laetolil Beds had a unique vegetation structure which was able to support a higher diversity of browsing ungulates than that exists in African ecosystems today or that it retained an ungulate community that was resilient to environmental change. The Upper Laetolil Beds ungulate community is also unique relative to other mid-Pliocene communities in eastern Africa, some of which are similar to extant communities, while others, such as Laetoli, lack modern counterparts. This suggests that A. afarensis was a eurytopic species that inhabited a variety of ecosystems, including those with and without modern analogs. The co-occurrence of both analog and nonanalog communities in the Pliocene suggests that the transformation toward ungulate communities of modern aspect occurred asynchronously in eastern Africa.

Describe the functional situation of patients one and two months after admission for COVID-19 pneumonia in an intensive care unit (ICU) and affect their mood one month after hospital discharge.

89 patients were admitted in ICU with a mortality rate of 48.3% in the ICU. Among the survivors, 42 patients completed the follow-up at two months. Functional deterioration was observed at ICU discharge in 97.6% and at hospital discharge in 76.2%. At follow-up, 66.7% of patients had recovered their baseline functional level one month after leaving the hospital and 85.7% had done so after two months. We analyzed tweets using natural language processing, Word Adjacency Graph (WAG) Modeling, and thematic analysis. Authors independently reviewed 10% of raw tweets in each WAG-generated topic, qualitatively analyzed tweets, and identified emerging themes.

Six themes emerged Support and Recognition of Nurses, Military Metaphors, Superhuman/Spiritual Metaphors, Advocacy, Personal Experiences with Nurses, and Social/Political Commentary. Public perception of nurses was positive, but nurses conveyed harsh realities of their work.

After excluding postpartum procedures, we applied log-linear (Poisson) event-history regression models for clustered person-period data, weighted for propensity to receive either sterilization procedures, and adjusted for sociodemographic and clinical variables to examine the poststerilization pregnancy rates.

NCT03438682.The temperature control process of electric heating furnace (EHF) systems is a quite difficult and changeable task owing to non-linearity, time delay, time-varying parameters, and the harsh environment of the furnace. In this paper, a robust temperature control scheme for an EHF system is developed using an adaptive active disturbance rejection control (AADRC) technique with a continuous sliding-mode based component. First, a comprehensive dynamic model is established by using convection laws, in which the EHF systems can be characterized as an uncertain second order system. Second, an adaptive extended state observer (AESO) is utilized to estimate the states of the EHF system and total disturbances, in which the observer gains are updated online by a non-linear observer bandwidth, that is as a function of the observation errors. Moreover, with the help of disturbance estimation, a novel sliding manifold is constructed with parameters adaptively adjusted by a dynamic nonlinear bandwidth function to reduce the impact of high gain problems, especially noise-sensitivity. A continuous sliding-mode (CSM) based component is also designed to handle disturbance estimation errors. Third, the stability of the closed loop system, including the proposed controller and estimator, is mathematically proved using the Lyapunov theorem. Finally, the comparative simulation results show that the proposed method has superior robustness and temperature tracking performance.
