This study compared implant outcomes following maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA) in edentulous patients with a residual alveolar bone height ≤3 mm. Four techniques were evaluated 1-stage bone-added osteotome sinus floor elevation procedure (BAOSFE) with simultaneous implant placement; 2-stage BAOSFE with delayed implant placement; 1-stage lateral window sinus floor elevation with simultaneous implant placement; and 2-stage lateral window sinus floor elevation with delayed implant placement. Patients were followed for 18 to 72 months (mean 52.5 months) after prosthesis placement. Data were analyzed with cone-beam computed tomography. A total of 96 implants from 71 patients were analyzed; pretreatment, there were no significant differences between patients. Total implant survival was 98.9%. The mean residual bone height was significantly higher in the 1-stage BAOSFE group than the other groups (P  less then  .01); 1 implant in this group failed at 3 months. There was no significant difference in total bone height gain between groups. However, the bone height gain of 1st sinus lifting with 2-stage BAOSFE was significantly lower than the 2-stage lateral window procedure (P  less then  .01). There was no prosthesis failure. The favorable implant outcomes suggest these 1-stage and 2-stage MSFA procedures should be considered as alternative treatment options for patients with extremely atrophic posterior maxilla.Low back pain (LBP) is a typical symptom in volleyball players, yet associated physical function factors have not been identified. This study purpose is to determine the relationship between LBP and physical function factors in order to identify potential factors for the management of LBP.Participants were 123 male and female volleyball players of 15- to 17-year-olds who, completed a questionnaire regarding demographic details, presence of LBP, and years of volleyball experience. Participants were divided into 2 groups based on the presence of current LBP and evaluated on physical function tests. The results of the questionnaire response and physical function test were compared between the 2 groups. Data were analyzed using a multivariate logistic regression analysis with presence and absence of current LBP as the explanatory variable.11.4% of all participants reported current LBP. Physical function factors associated with current LBP were a positive modified Thomas test, years of volleyball experience and reduced range of motion of shoulder horizontal abduction on the dominant hand side.The associations between physical function factors and LBP found in this survey suggest that attention should be given to more experienced players with decreased flexibility of hip and shoulder flexors on the dominant side in order to manage LBP in high school volleyball players.Prediction of aspiration pneumonia development in at-risk patients is vital for implementation of appropriate interventions to reduce morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, studies utilizing a comprehensive approach to risk assessment are still lacking. The objective of this study was to analyze the clinical features and videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) findings that predict aspiration pneumonia in patients with suspected dysphagia.Medical records of 916 patients who underwent VFSS between September 2014 and June 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into either a pneumonia group or a non-pneumonia group based on diagnosis of aspiration pneumonia. Clinical information and VFSS findings were evaluated.One hundred seven patients (11.7%) were classified as having pneumonia. Multivariate analysis indicated that aspiration during the 2- cubic centimeter thick-liquid trial of VFSS (odds ratio [OR] = 3.23, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.93-5.41), smoking history (OR = 2.63, 95% CI 1.53-4.53), underweight status (OR = 2.27, 95% CI 1.31-3.94), abnormal pharyngeal delay time (OR = 1.60, 95% CI 1.01-2.53), and a Penetration-Aspiration Scale level of 8 (OR = 3.73, 95% CI 2.11-6.59) were significantly associated with aspiration pneumonia development. Integrated together, these factors were used to develop a predictive model for development of aspiration pneumonia (DAP), with a sensitivity of 82%, specificity of 56%, and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.73.The best predictors for DAP included videofluoroscopic findings of aspiration during a 2-cubic centimeter thick-liquid trial, prolonged pharyngeal delay time, a Penetration-Aspiration Scale level of 8, history of smoking, and underweight status. These 5 proposed determinants and the associated DAP score are relatively simple to assess and may constitute a clinical screening tool that can readily identify and improve the management of patients at risk for aspiration pneumonia.To determine the effects of ankylosing spondylitis (AS)-associated hip damages on the outcome measurements after total hip arthroplasty (THA).The medical records of 122 patients with AS (181 hips) who underwent THA were retrospectively reviewed. The mean follow-up was 43.9 (32-129) months. The types and degrees of hip damages were evaluated by preoperative hip X-rays. The patients were grouped according to the satisfaction degree after the operation. Univariable and multivariable statistical analyses were conducted.The intraclass correlation coefficients for the assessment between the 2 reviewers in the study were 0.86 to 0.97. Cox regression showed that femoral head erosion severity had an effect on the recovery time of independent walking without crutches postoperatively (odds ratio = 1.467, 95% confidence interval 1.050-2.409, P = .025). The mean time to recover independent walking in the severe femoral head erosion group was 7.3 ± 0.9 weeks, which was 4.6 ± 0.4 weeks longer than in the non-severe femoral head erosion group, as confirmed by the log-rank (Mantel-Cox) test (Chi-squared = 11.684, P = .001). The multivariable analysis showed that higher acetabular sclerosis scores correlated with lower postoperative dissatisfaction risk (odds ratio = 0.322, 95% confidence interval 0.136-0.764).
